Hi everyone,

We're new to Celiac's so we're still finding our way. I know some Celiacs don't eat oats but for those of you who do, what's your opinion on Cheerios? Thanks for your help.

Chris

You're friend is a numbskull. ;) Cherrios are NOT NOT NOT gluten free.

KaitiUSA Enthusiast

Cheerios are NOT gluten free. Don't know where he/she got there info but I wouldn't be trusting the things they say are gluten free.

However, you can have Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles by Post

celiac3270 Collaborator

ABSOLUTELY NOT GLUTEN-FREE. THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT IF YOU E-MAIL/CALL THEM AND FROM THE WEBSITE:

Ingredients: Whole Grain Oats, Modified Corn Starch, Corn Starch, Sugar, Salt, Tocopherols, Trisodium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Colour. Contains Wheat Ingredients.

Thanks for the quick replies. I didn't think so but I did email general mills too just to confirm so I'll get an "official response" too. No wonder she doesn't seemed phased by the whole gluten free diet. Chris

Just for the record, General Mills is a brand that will not hide anything just like Kraft :D

Thanks for the tip about General Mills.. good to know. Chris

RE: Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles

Don't we have to be concerned about cross contamination with this manufacturer?

KaitiUSA Enthusiast

Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles are a Kraft brand. I really trust Kraft and never had a problem with the cereals and I am very sensitive. I eat foods that are processed on the same lines as wheat (alot of gluten-free things in the store are not made in dedicated facilities so there is that risk with alot of foods we eat) but if I have a reaction I get rid of it and won't eat it again.

It's quite amazing actually, the amount of misinformation that can float around. Last month, someone in the medical establishment (a nurse) told me that her celiac friend was overjoyed because she learning that Tim Horton's crullers were gluten free. I, of course, was totally skeptical (even if they didn't contain wheat, the contamination issue would make them off limits). Anyway, after contacting Tim Hortons, they said that they didn't know how this rumour was started (they already knew about it), but crullers were definitely NOT gluten free.

Just goes to show you.........

People who aren't celiacs just don't understand the whole gluten thing. They usually think just wheat. <_<

We went to my mom's house last week for lunch. She has always been very understanding and at least tries to feed us correctly. She even made a home made pastuerized, (yes pasturized) mayonaise one time. Anyway...she had some left over home made soup. She said it was made with beans and ham. I asked about the ham,. if there was any glaze on it ect. no...I asked if she put any canned broth in it...no...only canned tomatoes, Contandina. Everything seemed fine and she was so sure that it was gluten free we went ahead and ate it. It was delicious. Well....We later discovered it was a bag o f 15 bean soup that she had used. 15 bean soup has barley in it!!!

Well now my daughter and I are paying the price. We both feel so achey, like we have the flu, and it's been a week now. Too costly for the pleasure of a little soup.

You can never be too careful, even with people who mean no harm. :)

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
