Breathing Issues After Exercising And Pressure In Head

Hi,

I've been diagnosed as non-celiac gluten intolerant and have been gluten free for about 4 months now. Today I did some running and right after it I felt some pressure in my head, feel panicky, my breathing is heavy and body and chest muscles feel tight. Could this be related to gluten intolerance even after being glulten free for 4 months now? I have gone to emergency room before and have done EKG etc and everything was normal. Recently I started do drink a little dairy a couple of weeks back, just very little!

Also could my symptoms be just of a panic/anxiety attack?

My doctor gave me some digestive enzymes to take and I've been feeling a little better now after taking them. I think I have some degree of lactose intolerance also going on. Do you guys here think that my symptoms could be just related to anxiety caused by lactose intolerance? I think I will stay dairy free now too.. How long should I be dairy free till I can start introducing?

Has it been a while since you excercised hard? You may have simply over done it. It could perhaps be related to being intolerant of dairy and I think it is a good idea to avoid it for a bit if you haven't had this happen before and it is new since you reintroduced dairy. It would also be a good idea to have your doctor check your blood pressure and mention this to him at your next visit.

Yes I've been exercising harder than what I did today and this didn't happen. It happened just today, I feel very panicky and nervous for no reason and the only thing that I did started a little dairy a week back or so. I've noticed that some of my muscles twitch, like my right arm, some muscles in my thigh etc.. I'm not sure exactly but looks like dairy may have caused my symptoms. I also had some frozen yogurt yesterday too! I'll wait a couple of days and see and if I don't see any improvements I'll probably go see my doctor!

You might see if the dairy is the issue (test it out), but it also overlaps with exercise induced asthma symptoms.

ive had panic attacks, anxiety, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, panic under exercise or work, etc over the last 6 years-> i had all the EKG stuff done, breathing tests, etc.. i was guessing for years- no asthma

ive been to therapists, and been on paxil & xanax, etc, etc..

i knew i had a problem with wheat over the last 10 years- but i had no idea how much was involved here.

i recently got dx with Hashimoto's Hypothyroid- and its is UNBELIEVABLE- i had NO IDEA it was behind at least 98% of my Anxiety- since they added Cytomel to my Synthroid- my Anxiety & shortness of breath is 70% better. i had NO IDEA.

i did get my B12 tested last year- a B12 deficiency is common amongst Gluten Intolerants- and this will cause anxiety too! and panic attacks!

i just got a CBC done- to check for any Anemia, and my vit D levels.

*my advice to you- would be to check your B12, D, Iron levels, and full Thyroid panel!! these are all very common issues for people with gluten intolerance- and they can all (except the D maybe)-> be the culprit behind panic attacks!!! and stand your ground till your docs have covered all of it. my PCP didnt want to hear about me wanting to add Cytomel-> she just wanted to have me re-do my breathing tests & get on Antidepressants! im so happy i spoke up- cause im finally on the right track

He said over time it will go away but it takes time for the gut to heal and the mind to adjust... and in fact I am feeling better but I think it is the dairy causing elevated anxiety and breathing issues. I'm noticing a trend now from the time I consume dairy:

1. Feel lethargic, insomnia and dry itchy skin, extreme constipation and lack of concentration for few days.

2. Panic/anxiety lasting for 2-3 days.

3. Repeat 1. for few days.

4. Start to feel better slowly.

All the above steps can take anywhere from few days to couple of weeks depending on how much dairy I consume... Again I'm not sure if dairy is the issue but I think mostly it is because I've been gluten free for only 3 months or so. I was tested for milk, soy, eggs allergy and all were negative. I do take enzymes if I consume a heavy meal and a herbal supplement called Trifala (highly recommended).

I'm feeling little better now, at least anxiety has gone down almost 80%.. hope to feel better soon and recover from all my symptoms! Has anyone here have extreme dry skin and other skin problems due to gluten intolerance? I have extremely dry skin and my mouth is dry all the time. I feel thirsty a lot too!

You may be casien intolerant which would not show up on an allergy panel. For the dry skin, are you getting enough good fats in your diet? Are you on any medication? Many can make the mouth dry. It is winter and I find I dry out a lot from having the heat on. For the dry skin I find cocoa butter or shea butter to be good. I get the pure forms in a jar.

interesting... i havent had any luck giving up dairy yet- but i know i would feel better! hhmmmm

also with your last symptoms- make sure you're also getting screened for Diabetes 1 & Sjorgens

I get breathing issues sometimes too- I attribute it to anxiety since I have had so many tests and everything seems to be OK. I definitely am an anxious person and the celiac dx didn't help! LOL

Sure, but I think some foods elevate anxiety. In my case I think its milk even though I tested negative for milk allergy. I think I can tolerate a little yogurt and cheese but too much of it causes my symptoms. Although, my anxiety symptoms are less severe than they used to be 6 - 7 months back, they're still annoying! I also noticed that whenever I am anxious, I have extreme constipation and I feel awful whenever I eat something. I'm starting to feel much better from the last time I consumed dairy. It's been about a week or so now! I'm seriously thinking its the dairy stuff that's causing my symptoms. I think you should also try removing dairy from your diet and see if it helps!

Hi! I've had the same problem for about 2 weeks now. I've been gluten-free for only a month, however. I haven't eliminated any other allergens or whatnot. I think I might try to though after reading these. What is recommended?

I had a really bad reaction after eating tomatoes yesterday. Felt anxious and was breathing hard. I still feel a little anxious right now but better overall. Did anyone here react to tomatoes? or had similar experience?

Some of us react to nightshades and tomatoes are part of that family. Do you notice the same reaction to potatoes?

Don't lose heart if it seems you react to more and more things. Some of us are reactive to a lot of stuff until we heal. At diagnosis I tested positive to allergies to 98 of 99 things tested for. By six months into the diet I only had 3 allergies left. My doctor said my immune system was in hyperdrive but after it had calmed down I was able to add everything but soy and gluten back in.

Thanks for the advice and consolation! My doctor didn't test me for different types of allergies. He only tested me for soy, milk, eggs and gluten. I was negative for all except gluten! Do you recommend I see an allergist too? Now I'm trying to make a list of foods to keep track. I think tomatoes, yeast or dairy so far have been causing my issues. The most annoying symptom is the anxiety and tightness in chest. The symptoms come from no where and lasts a few days and subside! Everything else I can handle but this symptom annoys the heck out of me :D and I think some other food is causing it (not gluten).

BTW nice to know that you're feeling better and getting rid of the allergies! Do you mind sharing how much time it took for you to reach this stage? i.e. getting rid of the allergies from the time of diagnosis! Do you maintain a strict gluten free diet? Have you got cross contaminated sometimes? Also do you happen to know the technical reasons why we develop food allergies/intolerance and later get rid of them like in your case?

Some updates: I went and checked all the labels of gluten free chips and breads that I have been consuming and found out that all of them had some type of yeast. Most of them had at least yest extract. I was only eating rice and quinoa for 3 months and recently started to introduce gluten free breads into my diet (about a month or so back). Now I'm thinking it is the yeast causing my anxiety, tightness in chest and breathing issues. Although the symptoms are not as severe as they were about 6 months back but they're still there. I'm assuming I'll be able to tolerate yeast after healing is done but it might take aa while I guess. I was also tested for yeast overgrowth/allergy and it was negative. Is it possible to have yeast intolerance? Is there a test for it? Did anyone here have similar experience? Thanks for sharing!

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

      You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
