Does Anyone Else Crave Tortilla Chips?

Hi everyone,

I have celiacs and crave tortilla chips like crazy. I can go through a half a bag of chips a day, like the big bag of plain corn tortilla ones. Im not allergic to corn, but Im allergic to dairy, eggs, gluten, blueberries, mustard, tomatoes, eggplant, peanuts, sunflower, sesame, pinto beans, brazil nuts... and more its a long list so Im really limited. Im thin so its not like Im trying to drop alot of weight, but I have soft areas I want to tone and I know if I cut out all the calories I eat from chips it would make a huge difference. Its also not healthy to eat that much chips and I cant stop! Its mostly when I eat veggies, oddly enough, that I crave chips. I make healthy garbanzo beans with avocado and steamed veggies and I have to have chips with it. Or a salad, or Daiya cheese on brussel sprouts (my favorite pre-non-gluten eating food is Kraft Mac n Cheese mmmmmmmmm)... I feel twice as hungry right after I have veggies and all I can think about is chips. And I cant stay away from them. Any ideas on why I crave chips, and why always with veggies? Anyone else have this problem?

Do you think you're getting enough protein to feel fully satisfied?

Thats a really good point. For the most part I eat vegan, I've been having a cup of soy yogurt and 1/2 cup of raw nuts spread out every day, tofu, quinoa, soy milk, avocado, sushi 1-3 x's a week, yesterday and today each I ate a can of organic black beans (although Im allergic to most beans which makes it hard). I have red meat once a month or as often as I crave it (Im female so I need the iron, this month I had two burger patties and a steak in one week!) I dont do well with poultry or pork, I can do chicken once or twice a month. More than that I swear it slows everything down and I get c (sorry). I have a protein shake from my doctor I do a couple times a week. I think Im getting enough protein but Im not sure... My doctor tested my protein levels and they were low, but I dont have many options since Im allergic to everything and Im nervous about eating too much soy and getting allergic to that too. You might be on to something, maybe I should look into more protein options, any suggestions? Thank you.

I know of a good protein drink, but with all of your allergies I doubt you could drink it.

I don't see what is wrong with eating corn chips,.....I eat a ton myself with organic salsa. I prefer the organic blue corn variety.

This is a good protein drink if anyone else is interested. Less calories and sugar than the Ensure type drinks. Tastes about half as sweet which makes me happy. The others are 'sickening' sweet to me anyway.

Also for anyone that does not want a load of iron,.....like me,.....this is a great product. I have no connection to the business at all, but I did order a mixed flavor case about a month ago and like it a lot. Time to re-order!

I don't see what is wrong with it...but, have you seen the Beanitos? They aren't bad and they are made from beans. :rolleyes:

Can you have chia seeds? They're high in protein. I just gel them in water and eat them as is. But you can add them to other foods such as a smoothie or yogurt.

When I crave things it is because I am lacking something. Maybe you need to take vitamins?

I think thats part of it. I have low blood pressure so sometimes I black out when standing, my doctor said its because I have adrenal fatigue. She gave me her blessings to eat as much salt as I want as long as I also have alot of water with it. I should get one of those salt licks they give to horses :)

I've always liked salty crunchy foods like trisuits, wheat thins and pretzels which are obviosly out now. The gluten free pretzels are good but theyre so expensive! Theyre $6 a bag where Ive found them, geez. Im trying to lower my carbs and do more of a higher protein and (good) fat and vegetable diet and see how that goes. I havent tried beanitos, what kind of beans are they made from? Im allergic to pinto and kidney beans according to my blood test, havent tried them since going gluten free. I want to wait till my skin clears up before guinea pigging on myself :)

Chia seeds sound tasty! Would I find them at Whole Foods? Do I eat them raw? Thanks!

They must be put in liquid first, because they swell up like crazy.

Re the cravings. If you can find a gluten free vitamin B complex, and a calcium, magnesium mineral(s) to take that would help. You body interprets low blood calcium as carbohydrate/sugar cravings. The B vitamins are needed to ensure your other systems function correctly and work to absorb the minerals. With your extensive allergies, and being gluten free and partially vegan, getting enough of everything is going to be difficult.

You could try dousing things with more olive oil. But you may also want to make sure you eat fish or meat once a day for the protein.

Re your grain consumption, if any, try to eat more than one kind to complete the number of amino acids so you get to use the proteins (except that quinoa is the only complete one, I think.)

If you can do garbanzo beans there is a lot of things you can do with chickpea flour. You can make great flatbreads out of chickpea, buckwheat, and potato starch. If you have trouble finding buckwheat flour you can buy the gluten free roasted kasha buckwheat, and grind it yourself using a coffee grinder or even a little hand mortar and pestle such as found in a kitchen supply store for grinding spices. One flatbread takes a heaping tablespoon of each, some baking powder, a pinch of cream of tartar, salt, NO EGGS, just water, a little vinegar and oil, and can be done pretty quick in a small skillet.

You can also dedicate a blender to grinding your own special ingredient. I do almonds this way for almond meal.

Are you using a table salt with iodine in it when you make veggies or other things that call for salt? I had cut out the iodine for a few months when I first went gltuen free because I read that it can irritate DH. I was using only sea salt and kosher salt. I love these salts more than table salt, but then I read that we really NEED iodine, and it doesn't bring back the DH once it's gone it just irritates it if you have an outbreak. I found I was craving more salty processed items even when I had salted my steamed veggies with sea salt. I put some table salt with iodine back in my salt shakers (although I still love my sea salt and use it for cooking a lot) and I have had fewer cravings for salty snack. I still love salty stuff but I don't feel like I have to eat the whole bag of chips. :)

I picked up a calcium magnesium and zinc supplement it's free of my allergens. I was taking a mineral supplement for my natural doctor, it says it's free of my allergens but I would feel odd after taking it, I don't know how to explain it. The new one I got is fine though. I've noticed since taking it I hardly crave grains as much, I did get into the chips today but not many :) Other grains I had no desire for like Bobs red mill cereal.

The iodine may be an issue too, I always use sea salt and I just put two and two together as to why some chips brands I can't put down and some I don't care for- the ones with sea salt maybe I don't crave? I actually craved meat today and was able to resist carbs until my meal- magic! Thanks for the suggestions!

      If black seed oil is working for his Afib, stick to it, but if not, I can say that ablation therapy is no big deal--my mother was out of the procedure in about 1 hour and went home that evening, and had zero negative effects from the treatment. PS - I would recommend that your husband get an Apple watch to monitor his Afib--there is an app and it will take readings 24/7 and give reports on how much of the time he's in it. Actual data like this should be what should guide his treatment.

      This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

      Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

      Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
