Atlantic City

Was in Atlantic City all last week for a conference. Worked very long days so it was yogurt, fruit and snacks for breakfast and lunch. Dinners were out with colleagues. The difference since last year was amazing. Some highlights:

Gallagher Steak House: Waiter knew every ingredient of every menu item. Got filet, mash potatoes and sauteed string beans.

PF Changs: Yeah yeah I know but this waiter seem really on top of things.

Cafe 2825: I was really worried about this place after looking at their website. Your typical small Italian place where on the outside (not in a casino), everything looked full of Gluten. Probably belongs in Little Italy. But holy crap was I wrong. Spoke to the owner after we sat down. He said "don't worry about a thing, we have two kinds of gluten-free pasta in the back and we make everything from scratch, I can make almost ANY menu item gluten-free." This place was probably the best meal I've had in 2 years and you'd never know it. I told him he MUST update his website! Pricey but soooo worth it (company was paying anyway)

Buddakan: Also worried as this was a last minute decision by others and I had no time to research. What do you know? They have a large gluten-free menu! I was a little buzzed at the time so not as worried about CC as I should have been but I came out just fine.

Left AC only down $14 too!

Was in AC again last week for the same conference and would like to update this post:

Went back to Cafe 2825 and had the same type of awesome experience as last time.

FYI all restaurants in the Borgata now have official gluten-free menus. Some may be more limited than others but at least they are there.

Had a great meal at Dock's Oyster House (since 1897) many natural gluten-free items like steak and seafood.

China Sea of Absecon (right outside of AC). Family run Chinese with large gluten-free menu. As good as lilli and loo in NYC but 1/2 the price.

I've gone from worrying about a week in AC two years ago to really enjoying it this year. As gluten-free becomes more main stream, easy to get by in this tourist heavy location.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
