Vitamin Supplementation

I recently received the results from some bloodwork. I had the bloodwork taken because I have been exhausted and have had some peripheral neuropathy. I need some help interpreting the results as the doctor was less than helpful.

Vitamin B12 195 (221-700)

Transferrin Saturation 19 (20-55)

Zinc 45 (55-150)

There were also a few borderline things from the metabolic panel:

Protein, Total 7.0 (6.0-8.4)

Albumin 4.0 (3.5-5.0)

Calcium, Total 8.5 (8.5-10.5)

The only advice the doctor gave me was to take iron, B12, and zinc. He didn't even tell me the amounts or how long to take it or anything. Can any of you shed some light on what kind of supplementation I should be doing and what dosages. I know that you aren't doctors, but maybe your doctor was more helpful than mine :)

frieze Community Regular

5000 mcg of methylcobalamin daily, on an empty stomache.

zinc, no more than 50 mg daily without additional copper.

Iron, i would try to increase dietary intake.

Do you take any meds? acid reducers will interfer with b12 digestion and iron digestion, and protein digestion.

Thank you for your input. The only meds I take are synthroid and birth control bills. I know that I can't take vitamins within 2 hours of the synthroid, but the synthroid shouldn't effect the vitamin levels.

What is the difference between Methylcobalamin and the B12 that starts with a C? I didn't know which to get in the store. In your opinion, are there any brands that are better than others?

How soon should I expect to see a difference in my energy level?

cyanocobalamin has the cyano molecule, which is cyanide and needs to be remove and the cobalamin methylated to work in the body....a small subset of persons can not do that. so it is best to use the methyl- from the get go.

dont know about one brand or another, the sublingual commonly have sorbitol, which you may want to avoid. you want to take the B12 away from food for the same reason that you take you thyroid med away from food, both are very large molecules. good luck

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
