Burning Sensation

Hi,

When I accidentally eat gluten, which just happened yesterday, I get a whole variety of symptoms that start happening the day of and continue almost a week, such as the bloating, cramps, brain fog, anxiety, general misery, etc! The symptom I can't figure out is what I call the "burning sensation" that I can feel in my intestines that starts the 2nd day and goes on and on....but is now starting to be present at other random times! Even when I'm pretty sure I haven't had any gluten!

Originally, it was dairy that gave me this symptom. After I went gluten free last year and was still eating dairy, I was in agony from this "burning." (On a side note, after I went gluten-free my lactose intolerance really kicked up a notch and I've lost my ability to stomach any dairy.) Thus, I am also dairy-free now. What perplexes me is that the burning sensation is back and not just when I've been glutened (but not as bad as it was when I still drank cow's milk & ate yogurt).

I have this feeling that it's from the almond milk I drink. (I do not have any nut allergies tho.) Anyhow, I drink a lot of it now. So, I'm wondering if any of you have experienced this and if it could be soy? Corn? MSG? Something else? I'm sure I don't have a problem with all grains because I could eat rice all day and be fine.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi, sounds odd! I don't have a burning sensation as such but i did develop a soy intolerance after eating it almost everyday after being diagnosed with celiac disease and possible lacto-intolerance. It now gives me almost the same effects as if i have eaten gluten! It was very miserable until i realized what it was that was causing it. I use lacto-free milk but i know that doesn't help some people. Maybe try cutting it out and seeing what happens when you do have it after a week or something? Good luck!

Wow, I could have written the last two posts, more or less !

I think when you are glutened, you are already "down" - it doesn't take much to get you down further. I tend to avoid dairy & soy as well - but I can get away with a little now & then (of course I can never 'get away' with gluten). I too have tried milk substitutes because dairy gets me but have not had any success - & I blame that on soy. It's frustrating ! I just don't have cereal.

So...no gluten & very little dairy or soy here as well.

I have gastritis and when it flares up my stomach will burn for a week or two. I find drinking coconut water can help soothe it! Plus being extra careful about spices and acidic foods.

I actually get burning sensations in my feet and sometimes my stomach too. I cheated and ate some gluten this past week and now I feel miserable. Lots of symptoms. Uhhhh.

I developed awful burning sensations in my skin, stomach, mouth, esophagus, heck... everywhere . My muscles, my feet....it was the real clue that something other than "IBS" was going on.

It is very painful. I felt like I was on fire all the time!! I cried every day.

4 months after being gluten-free, it is slowly subsiding.

Fortunately, the stomach burning finally left when I started taking probiotics and the bowel issues stopped.

I still have a burning mouth and throat, though and spicy food or citrus is out of the question still.

It's inflammation. In the muscles, nerve compression. Toxicity. Many explanations.

Once I saw that "burning, prickling, stabbing" sensations were a symptom of celiac disease, I felt relieved.

Several people on here told me that they also had this burning and that it resolved in time..it made me feel validated and encouraged.

It made me crazy for the 3 years pre-diagnosis.....and no doctor could tell me what it was.

COULD be soy, MSG...they bother me and others on here report "burning" from soy as well.

Hope it subsides for you soon!

Thanks for the insight everyone!

I am feeling better today (a good change from yesterday, when I felt completely life-less and was an emotional wreck!) I've cut everything out except for: meat, vegetables, fruit, and gluten-free brown rice bread. I feel a lot better and I haven't experienced any of this burning today!! :) I think I will try almond milk, chocolate (which has soy in it), and corn on different days later this week and see if any of them are causing it. I have a suspicion that it's soy because so many people have a problem with it.

Glad you feel better. :) That is a good plan--and frankly, the only way we can determine which foods continue to give us problems. Best luck!

I get a burning sensation in my lower back that in the past I had attributed to my cysto-eurethritus <sp> but now I am not so sure.

I definitely feel it the next day after I ingest a lot of gluten.

I am still in the diagnosis stage for celiac so have not gone gluten free yet, I have had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy and now my doc wants to do the camera in a pill test, he is convinced I have celiac because of my family history, unexplained iron deficiancy and a really high result on one antibody.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
