Alternative Therapies During Glutening

Hi Everyone- I'm just wondering if anyone has tried anything alternative while glutened. Something that increases your appetite and gives you pain relief. My mom took it when she went through chemo and I'm wondering if anyone has tried it for glutening. I normally would not but my last accident was so horrible that everything I usually do- ibuprofen, nausea drugs from ER, etc. did nothing. Thanks, B

I read in another forum some people use club soda to minimize the reactions. It's thought that the quinine may have some benefit. Of course, if I'm going to use club soda, I'd be downing it as a vodka collins :P

I usually drink lots of water and take ibuprofen & acidophilus (I have these b/c of candida and they help with tummy aches, but I'm not sure if I should be taking them when I get glutened or if it even matters? Anyone know?) And I really need to be taking less <MUCH LESS> ibuprofen.

I definitely don't need anything to increase my appetite tho! After being glutened I crave bad-for-me foods - like french fries and garlic-y pickles! So I can't help there. But for the nausea, I drink gingerale.

Interesting note - when my uncle was hospitalized for -what they thought was meningitis- they gave him an elixir of morphine, Benadryl and capsaicin (found in chili peppers) to relieve his migraines. The capsaicin especially is supposed to be a pain reliever. Bring on the spicy foods! :D

Bananas,Papaya and honey have all soothed my stomach when I've eaten gluten accidentally. I also take probiotics, which help A LOT. If you're able to tolerate dairy then yogurt with live active cultures is also very helpful. Another thing (but it's not over-the-counter) is Symax or Robinal Forte. These drugs really help with pain and cramping.

What about peanut butter and jelly? Is that safe? I'm new here as well, and I have been having issues with this "new episode" in my life for the last 10 months. I used to drink alot of beer but just can't do it anymore. Sucks, but I did enough of that in my 20's to last me.

Any other name brands can you suggest avoiding? :unsure:

I'm done with Hot Pockets, cookies and pretzels. :(

What cereals would you suggest?

I use probiotics, enzymes, vitamins, and teas.

I try to pump my immunity and give me a boost that way and the tea really settles my stomach. Also, mashed potatoes have always been good when my stomach is not feeling well.

Alot of peanut butters are safe but you should always check labels ...I use Jif. Jif and skippy are all gluten free.

Jelly I go with Smuckers-a brand that will say wheat,rye,barley,oats on the label or it will be safe

As far as cereals go:

Post Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles are gluten free(I'm not big on sugar but I love these)

Envirokidz has some pretty good cereals too and the ones that are gluten free will say it on the front

EnjoyLife has some as well

Always check labels, but natural peanut butters will be gluten-free (I like the stuff Trader Joe's has, myself...), and the same with natural jams/jellies.

As for cereals, I don't like really sweet stuff (Fruity Pebbles is right out for me!), so I tend to get one of the following:

* Envirokidz Gorilla Munch (about the sweetest I go) (available at some mainstream grocery stores, Trader Joe's, and many health food stores)

* Nature's Path Corn Flakes (either regular, blue, or honey'd) (available at a few large mainstream grocery stores and many health food stores)

* Health Valley Rice Crunch'Ems or Corn Crunch'Ems (just like Chex, without the malt) (available at a few large mainstream grocery stores and many health food stores)

* Perky's Nutty Rice (like GrapeNuts, a bit) (available at some health food stores)

* Erewon's Crisp Rice (like Rice Crispies, without the malt) (available at many health food stores)

Today at work I was so-ooooooo hungry...like I hadn't eaten in days. Is that normal? I ate a soft-boiled egg, a fruit cup, a Lean Cuisine chicken and string beans meal, and I sat there staring at the vending machine. It was calling me....frantically, I rumaged through my pockets for change and I pressed the buttons. A3: Fritos Corn Chips.

I couldn't help it.

Then my manager comes back from Arby's and he got the Five cheddar for $5 deal so he asks if I want one...oh-hhhhhhhh.....I took one, but only ate one half of the bread.

About 20 minutes or so pass and I had the worst aches in my upper torso. Like I did a few rounds with Tyson.

So ...let me ask..what probably set that pain off?

The Chips or the frozen food dinner or the one slice of bread....was it everything?

Isn't there any meds I can take for the pain? I'm Ok right now...but it did hurt.

Those chips are gluten free. Actually alot of Lays, Frito Lay, Utz chips are gluten free and you can get lists for them.

Also, the Lay's Staxx(which are like Pringles) are all gluten free and made on dedicated lines. So you can have alot of chips.

The bread or the frozen food dinner likely set it off but I can't tell you for sure which one did. Once you get a reaction nothing to do but let it run its course. I mean you can try painkiller but you will still get the damage it may help ease the symptoms though.

You can eat alot..you just can't eat the gluten and even if you are 99% gluten free it doesn't cut it...it's all or none. That 1% is like not following the diet at all. You just won't heal or get better until all of the gluten is gone.

The frozen dinner probably had gluten and the Arby's definitely did. Fritos are actually gluten-free. Peanut butter and jelly is all pretty much gluten-free.

It's quite normal to be VERY hungry when you first go gluten-free. I ate a ton. But you'll never get better unless you avoid the gluten.

      Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

      The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
