Fatigue/no Energy And Mood Swings

MegRie

Recommended Posts

MegRie Rookie

I have been Gluten-Free for about a year and a half now. Before going Gluten-Free I had no energy and was feeling depressed. After going Gluten-Free I had a complete turn around, though I would get to feeling bad here and there (usually due to accidentally eating gluten).

Recently, however, I have had no energy--I don't even want to do the things I want to do. I also feel like I am constantly battling with my mood, frustration, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, and sometimes sad. Any advice?? I decided to try "Stress Response" from gaia herbs, but I just got it today, so not sure how that will turn out. BTW, generally if I have energy I am super happy, outgoing, and get tons of stuff done. But when I don't have the energy I am just the opposite.

It may be time to look into some supplementation of vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 can be supplemented without evidence of reaching a toxic level. For the rest of the vitamins it would be best to start with testing to see what levels you are lacking. Vitamin D defiency can cause fatigue and some of the symptoms you describe. When was the last time you had your thyroid checked?

It could be that you're getting glutened on a low-level by something you've been eating lately, or you're low on vitamin D - it is getting to be winter and less light = less vitamin d.

Keep a food diary. Re-check you daily routine with food and products. Check for other sensitivities.

AND look outside the box. Are you eating a well balanced diet, are you of age for pre-menopausal symptoms would arrive (mine began at 35)?

You might consider getting a full Metabolic Blood Panel to check all your "systems" and levels. All of us should do that annually.

Hey MegRie,

I know this post is pretty old, but I just wanted to say that I have these exact same symptoms. When I first went gluten free I felt great, then slowly my energy declined more and more. Now I have days where I get so frazzled and overwhelmed by the simplest tasks that I can't get anything done and I am very anxious and moody much of the time.

I have been taking sublingual vitamins for about two months and I think they helped slightly, but nowhere near the improvement I was hoping for.

What I am suspecting now is that it may be a non-GI casein issue (or maybe another food intolerance). I am going to try not eating any dairy for a couple months to see if that yields any results. If you're still struggling, maybe this is something you could try.

Good luck and let me know if you figure anything out!

Hi, MegRie. You are describing major depression. I had that happen, and it was a bad flare-up of my Hashimoto's thyroid disease. Then the physical symptoms of hypothyroidism hit and I headed for the doctor.

I got on enough thyroid but I have also become dairy intolerant and dairy makes me feel dizzy, foggy, and apathetic. There is another food intolerance that I'm still trying to figure out because I feel woozy after some meals. Keep a food and symptoms diary and there is no harm asking your doctor to check your thyroid.

I have the same issues - no energy whatsoever.

I know 100% I don't have thyroids (just had that checked two months ago).

I also know that I have ABSOLUTELY NO GLUTEN - not even in my soap, cream, or shampoo. I am 100% sure.

I don't eat dairy, grains, legumes, eggs, nightshades, nuts, oils and a whole other bunch of foods.

No processed foods.

All I eat is cabbage family vegetables and tubers (carrots, rutabaga, etc), grass-fed chicken and fish.

So... why am I so low on energy?

I count calories to make sure I eat enough every day (around 1800 calories).

So... what is wrong?

Maybe because your diet is so limited that you are not getting the vitamins & minerals you need? HAve you had things like your iron, B12 & Vit D tested? Low amounts of these can make you tired

Thanks for your response! I did have my iron, B12 and Vit D tested and even other things (a complete check) and EVERYTHING IS GOOD.

The only thing that I can think of is I am low on sugar. I crave sweet fruits all the time. I wonder if anybody else experiencing that?

Why did you decide to cut all these out?

Why did you decide to cut all these out?

I haven't decided to cut all of them out - my body did. It always tells me (within minutes) if it does not like something. I cannot have avocados, nuts, some apples and anything coconut. My body does not accept too many things, but it craves spinach, parsnips, Brussel sprouts, Chinese cabbage, and grass-fed lamb.

I used to be a chocoholic. I don't know who I am any more. My body craves things that I never liked. If somebody would tell me a year ago that I would be craving spinach, I would laugh out loud. But this is what my body wants now and I am not laughing. My body and I have an agreement: I give it what it wants and it lets me do what I want (for the most part).

The only problem for me is my low energy levels. I cannot say they are very low, but I would like to have more energy, for sure.

I think most of us get much much better when we cut out the "poison" gluten but our health problems didn't start and stop at gluten. Why some of us only develop this intolerance? Genes only give us more chances to have celiac...there must be something else. As far as I am concerned, I believe the toxic build-up in our systems is the major issue. This is why we have more and more allergies, intolerances and all these new illnesses conventional medicine can't catch up with. How about that gluten that had hard time to be absorbed or eliminated before we stopped eating it. Could it be still there acting like toxins? All blood tests are not accurate in checking everything...I heard vit B 12 could be deficiente in the nerves but still show OK on tests.

Just my two cents.

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works
    • trents
So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
