Has Anyone Had A Problem With Swanson's Chicken Broth?

Heather Anne

I only ask because I thought I was being 100% gluten-free. I normally have severe reactions when contaminated, but I didn't have any for the last three months. Somehow, someway I have been consuming small amounts of gluten. The only thing that I switched was my chicken broth. I was using Progresso, but switched to Swanson's because of coupons!!! That was three months ago. Now my symptoms are worse than ever, but came on slowly over time!

Thanks!

i just started using pacifica free range chicen broth swansons 99 percent and 100 percent fat free I have been eating and I think it is ok I havent had any problems. I started doing pacifica just because the 99 perscent fat free from swansens has soy in it...

Progresso and Kitchen Basics chicken broths are also gluten-free. I don't have either on hand right now so don't know if they contain soy.

It could be the MSG in the broth. Many people are sensitive to msg - especially in the beginning.

Thanks! I knew that it was on a gluten-free list, which is why I switched from Progresso to Swanson's. I am pretty sure that this broth is the culprit. It could also be the msg, but I had never reacted to it before (I had that as part of my elimination diet once). I'll probably start staying away from that as well!

From now on I'm using Kitchen Basics or Pacific, as both are natural!

Thanks so much for the response!

Heather Anne, have you ever considered eliminating all processed foods and going to a very simple whole foods diet to see if you feel better?

Chicken broth is very easy to make yourself (especially if you have a crockpot) and you would know exactly what's in it. I made some good turkey broth before Thanksgiving...only turkey parts, water and salt. Much better than anything I could ever buy including those brands already mentioned.

My wife and I were just talking about that prior to Thankgiving. I found a couple cans of Swanson's chicken broth, and we were debating whether or not to use them. It seemed to us like I had a reaction to it which is why we quit using them, but we couldn't recall. We got rid of them. :) Better safe than sorry. After going on the GAPS diet for a while, we now either make our own broth or use Pacific Natural Foods Organic.

Swanson's Chicken broth is a staple in my home. I also use HerbOX Chicken in my rice.

The Organic does have wheat:

Ingredients

Organic Chicken Broth (Water, Organic Free Range Chicken), Contains less than 2% of the Following: Sea Salt, Chicken Flavor (Flavoring [Chicken Stock, Chicken Fat, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Egg Yolk Solids], Salt), Organic Chicken Flavor (Natural Flavor (Certified Organic), Sea Salt, Xanthan Gum), Cooked Organic Vegetables (Carrot (Certified Organic), Onion (Certified Organic), Celery (Certified Organic)), Chicken Fat (Certified Organic), Vegetable Flavor (Spinach Puree, Carrot Puree, Celery Puree, Salt, Onion Puree, Citric Acid), Organic Yeast Extract (Organic Yeast Extract, Salt, Wheat (Certified Organic)), Onion Powder (Certified Organic), Sugar (Certified Organic), Cane Juice (Certified Organic), Canola Oil (Certified Organic), Flavoring (Certified Organic), Carrot Powder (Certified Organic), Potato Flour (Certified Organic), Turmeric (Certified Organic), Black Pepper (Certified Organic).

But it is organic wheat... ;)

That's a lot of ingredients for a simple thing...

I know. We were making fun of it last weekend. Why would "organic" require so many more additives? Unless they used less chicken to start with and wanted to boost the flavor....

Yes, problems here. You are correct! It's troublesome.

There are only two types of the swansons chicken broth that are gluten free:

Per their website

Swanson’s Chicken Broth 99% Fat Free

Swanson’s Natural Goodness Chicken Broth 100% Fat Free Less Sodium

All the other ones have gluten and clearly mark wheat in the ingredients label with an astrick.

If I stick to those two types of swansons and that's it, I don't get sick, but if I happen to accidentally get one of the other ones (like the organic one with 1/3 less sodium) I'm as sick as a dog!

Scott, thank you SO MUCH for this!! She has been through so much in the last three years as we've tried to track down answers. This language will definitely help me help her to reframe.
