Itchy Scalp, Laundry, And Shampoos

Hi Folks,

I have had a problem with dry itchy scalp. I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is an external or internal issue. I had joined the "No Poo" )(no shampoo) movement after using a few shampoos made my scalp itch and I broke out in severe hives around my neck as head as well.

I've been using baking soda and vinegar and even borax but to be honest my hair feels both oily, dry, and disgusting. The itching is getting worse and I know of a few gluten free shampoos but I'm not sure if it would work or not. To be honest, I haven't been on my gluten free diet either. I've also had all menopause symptoms.... I'm thinking premature ovarian failure only at age 24.

Is it caused by external or internal? I'm so itchy and I can't say I'm a pro at this! I'm still learning. I was diagnosed 3 years ago along with my mother. (Who is also suffering from the same problem, now losing her hair.)

Have you had your thyroid checked? And if you think you're pre menopausal are you seeing a GYN or Endo? Have you had your vitamin levels checked?

And if you are Celiac and are not on your diet there's a very good chance it's internal (assuming you've eliminated gluten and other known allergens for you from body care products).

Only way to know is to get back on the diet and find out.

I haven't had my thyroid checked in a few years. I am probably low on vitamins. I do take ferrous sulfate daily.. I think I may be premenopausal because my menstrual cycles have cut down to only lasting one day and I am definitely not pregnant. I've had the hot flashes, cold sweats, anxiety, NO libido at one point (that parts fixed),etc. I have a history of eight miscarriages as well which is why they tested me for celiac disease.. most of which blighted ovums. (I do have two beautiful children now though) I don't have health insurance currently but I am working on it now..

I'm starting the diet today as my new years resolution. :)

Nizoral shampoo will knock that itch out I'm not 100% sure if its gluten-free It's about $15 @ walmart/walgreen's.

I would get back on the diet before you assume you are going into menopause. You probably are having hormonal issues, the question is WHY??? Gluten is probably playing a huge role. Celiac is a common cause of infertility as you well know, and I know I certainly have sub-par hormone levels.

I'm very sorry to hear about your miscarriages.

Those things are definitely gluten related for me. I've been gluten-free for about 3 1/2 months now, and I still have itchy skin. I test high for Chronic Urticaria, which for me is itchy skin (and scalp) and wheals-- what look like little mosquito bites mostly on my arms and legs. Anyway-- many of your symptoms are gluten related. Be really strict with the diet and you will see a dramatic change. Also, try to get your nutrient levels up, that can certainly wreak havoc with your body.

.

Psoriasis??? Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that can be associated with diabetes and other autoimmune diseases such as Coeliac Disease.

Scalp Psoriasis [scaly patches or red lumps] can extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead, the back of the neck and around the ears. Over-the-counter tar shampoos and shampoos containing menthol can help reduce itching. Medicated shampoos, which treat the scalp [not the hair], are also available. There are prescribed drugs also ..

Hi

I am so sorry you are suffering this at your young age. I am pretty certain that gluten messed with my reproductive system as well. It took quite a while for me to conceive both my children, but had no other problems. Pre-menopausal symptoms seemed to kick in in my late thirties, and cold, anxiety and varying libido have been constant companions throughout my twenties and thirties. In my forties the furnace started and my periods stopped for about 6 months. They restarted after a short spell off gluten due to medical treatment for something else and hormone treatment for ovarian cysts. Then the furnace restarted and my periods stopped again after another year or so. Blood tests confirmed I was post-menopausal at 46. Ok, slightly early menopause, but so what? I finally went strictly gluten free in September to sort out other issues and hey-presto my period started within a couple of days, and has been regular as clockwork since. The furnace has also gone (my normal "cold" self has resurfaced), and I only have the very occasional very mild flush. My periods are now short and light, so may be a short-lived reprieve, but at my age, it all helps.

I hope your going off gluten helps you too.

I second this. It has made a world of difference for me. I use it for about three shampoos in a row, then I can use regular shampoo for a couple months before it acts up again.

I agree with @trents that the IgA you listed sounds like a total IgA, not celiac-specific, if 114 is normal.  Were any other antibody tests run?
    • Russ H
What you describe is seronegative villous atrophy (negative antibody tests but positive biopsy). It is uncommon in coeliac disease, and there are other causes, but the most common cause is coeliac disease. I would pursue this with your healthcare provider if possible. Based on clinical history, test results and possible genetic testing for susceptibility to coeliac disease it should be possible to give a diagnosis. There is a bit more here: Seronegative coeliac disease

If you are still eating gluten you could get a celiac disease blood panel done, but I agree with @trents and the gold standard for diagnosing celiac disease would be your endoscopy results. Is it possible they did do a celiac disease panel before your biopsy? This would be the normal chain of events. This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease. One test that always needs to be done is the IgA Levels/Deficiency Test (often called "Total IGA") because some people are naturally IGA deficient, and if this is the case, then certain blood tests for celiac disease might be false-negative, and other types of tests need to be done to make an accurate diagnosis. The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.

Actually, it would be more correct to say that the genetic potential to develop celiac disease is passed down from parents to children. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually do. But it is also true that the offspring of those who do have active celiac disease are at a considerably higher risk of developing active celiac disease than those of parents who have the genes but don't develop the disease. Some recent, larger studies put the risk at near 50% for the first degree relatives of those who have active celiac disease.

Hello everyone! Been a while since I posted. The past few moths have been the best by for recovery for myself. I have been the least bloated I have ever been, my constant throat clearing is almost gone, I have stopped almost all medication I was prevously taking (was taking vyvanse for adhd, pristiq for anxiety,fomotadine/blexten for histamine blockers and singulair). Only thing I take now is Tecta. I also no longer get any rashes after eating. Things are going very well. Most success came actually once I upped my B12 daily dose to 5,000 mcg. I do have one thing I am un able to figure out and want to see if anyone else has this issue or has experience working around it. Ever since I was born I have always had a issue getting fruits and veggies down. No matter how hard I tried, it would always result in gagging or throwing up. Always just thought I was a picky eater. Now that my stomach and system has healed enough that I can feel when something is off almost istantly, I notice that after eating most fruits (sometimes I am ok with bananas) and veggies, my stomach instantly starts burning and my heart starts to pound and I get really anxious as if my body doesnt know what to do with what just enetered it. So I am thinking now that this is what probably was going on when I was born and my body started rejecting it before which caused this weird sensory issue with it causing the gagging. Hoping someone has some exprience with this as well because I would love to be able to enjoy a nice fruit smoothie once in a while haha. Thanks everyone!
