Trials, Tribulations, and Revelations from a new celiac

Eggcellent! Egg Drop

Some of us have never gotten around to getting that book about gluten free restaurant eating, but I'm aware that Pad Thai is naturally Gluten-Free(people on this board rave about it). So, I finally tried it yesterday at this CHEAP restaurant (all lunch plates $4). It was spicy and delectable! The whole dining experience was nice--ordering without having to specify anything (except, I did make clear that I'm allergic to soy sauce). Funny, I noticed everyone oogling MY plate, for a change! Gluten Free Rice Krispies Treats, Camping, And Other Tidbits

I made the gluten free Rice Krispies Treats and my friend and fellow blogger, Katja, made her own souped up version. Read more about what we made and view pictures Open Original Shared Link. I also wrote what happened when I brought them to the potluck. Since Marines don't always get to use their leave (vacation days), instead of taking a vacation this year, I visited family on three separate weekends in June, July, and August: FAMILY REUNION: Met my friend and former teaching colleague f

Halloween Party & Thanksgiving Planning

To see what I'm planning to cook for Thanksgiving this year, with links to recipes, click Open Original Shared Link. I got ideas from magazines as well as from the Gluten Free Expo in Norcross, GA, last weekend.     I'm throwing my first Halloween Party, and these are the gluten free Halloween snacks I'm serving: Chocolate tombstones and witches fingers I'm making from molds where you melt and put food coloring in the chocolate to paint different parts of the design various colors. "silly Ass" Disease

Last night Travel Dude came over for our indulgence night of American Idol, chili dogs (we pour Wendy's chili over Hebrew National lowfat hot dogs he bakes in the oven and I use Kinnickick gluten-free bun), and romancin. He also brought over Ruffles and (gluten-free) brownies from the pickup window at Outback Steakhouse, but I was too stuffed to eat mine! My student teacher and I are getting more used to one another. I like her. I just wish she were a harder worker. She's 28, a mom, and

List: What And Where Have I Been Eating Lately?

I blog regularly, but not on this site much anymore. I liked this site because it is mostly celiacs, so I will occasionally post here, but no pics for this site. I've been diagnosed since 2005, so here is WHAT I've been eating lately:     Trader Joe's gluten free boxed mac n cheese (the ONLY one I'll eat) Gluten Freeda's gluten free ice cream sandwiches (new flavor: Cherry Cheesecake) (Whole Foods) Amy's frozen Gluten Free Burritos (I heat these on my own plate, covered in the work micro

Onion Rings, Pizza, Betty Crocker, And Cuban

I found a house to buy, so since I'm moving out, might as well mess up the kitchen here....So I tried the beer batter onion ring recipe on this site, but the first "test" rings came out without the batter on very well, so I had a brainstorm and after dipping the raw rings in batter, I coated them in gluten-free Orgran bread crumbs. They turned out crunchy, greasy, and sweet. So savory! They looked and tasted so good, I think non-gfreople would eat them! Traveldude was feeling under the

I Want Candy!- Gluten Free Valentine Kinds

Don't be a downer. St. Valentine's Day is not a Hallmark Holiday. This holiday has a sociological value and psycho-emotional value of lifting the winter doldrums and inspiring people to be romantic, thoughtful, and profess their love. Plus, there's the candy! Open Original Shared Link candy is almost all gluten free. I'd observe and ask about cross-contamination, but I'm planning on getting some! My faves are trinidads, turtles, and carmallows. Open Original Shared Link is Celiac Family's

Good Eats

They took second helpings! The Japanese Rice Coconut Pudding turned out fine. It looked and tasted like oatmeal with cinnamon in it. I guess, since oatmeal isn't something we get to eat, it was a happy coincidence. Although I did read about some type of oat that has a low enough level of gluten.... I have been dealing with somewhat of a dilemma. The detective calls himself finicky. He doesn't have the affinity for fresh fruit and veggies like I do (lots of men are that way, aren't they? Th

Grasshoppers, Mussels, & Cow Tongue- Oyamel Restaurant

Since moving to the DC/Virginia area, Oyamel is a chow champion of mine, since it's near the museums (I left my car in California-no snowy driving 4 me). Not only do I volunteer at one of the Smithsonian Museums, but I set a goal to see as many of the museums/sights in this area as possible during our year here. Let's tangent to a museum/tourist list: So far, I've toured : Pentagon, Gettysburg, Newseum, Library of Congress, Spy Museum, G.Washington Masonic Memorial, Freer Gallery, Sackler G

Planet Celiac: Pasadena Celiac Convention May 2nd

My lofty expectations for the Celiac Conference were met! It was AWESOME! People just like ME! Vendors cooking and catering to ME, and chucking copious samples my way. (I did have to spit some in the trash, but there were some very tasty morsels as well.) Doctors delivering diatribes about dx and diarrhea and DQ8 and disease and deflated villi and developments in process for protection against gluten. I enjoyed the clarification and question-and-answer sessions with those docs. A formal,

Get Over Yourself, Rachael Ray!

All I can say about the Rachael Ray Cookbook, 365 and No Repeats! (written in a slang-laden, simplicity-encouraging, style that caters (pardon the pun) to User-Friendliness), is that RR has forgotten a few things now that she's ubiquitously uber famous: We don't have sous chefs to chop, dice, and julienne everything, so it doesn't take only 35 minutes prep for us- that timing planner box is WAY off! We don't have people to handwash 3 pots, a pan, and a Baking Dish for one meal After we just

Victory At El Torito

One word: Enchiladas! I had steak enchiladas and they were muy bien! I had no problemas getting my dance on afterward, either! I ordered normally but cautioned the waiter about being allergic to wheat and later he made a joke about how did I enjoy the flour tortillas. haha Whatever. It was cool. I defrosted berry pancakes for breakfast today (yum) and ate M&Ms, carrots, tuna w/mayo&dill, and potato chips for lunch, and for dinner I'm cooking pea soup and also baked apples from my glu

Eating Lately

gluten-free foods I've tried lately: GlutenFreeda's frozen cookies- forgot the name of the flavor- something w/pb & ch chips- Ok, but 140 cal/ea. and I think they taste better frozen, just the dough, which is probably how I'll eat the rest of them. Ian's frozen fish sticks- excellent! Addictive! Very crunchy! Ian's frozen turkey corn dog bites- very good Large gluten-free pasta shells- haven't tried them yet. I despise the gray-looking rice pasta for the mushiness and the b

Murderous Milky Way

As you know, I was so excited to get that gluten-free candy list that I had gone out and stockpiled those sweety sweets previously assumed to be not gluten-free, but lo and behold the list said they were fine! Well, I got glutened today. Milky Way. My fault. The list says Milky Way Midnight only. Sorry, I didn't know there was a milky way midnight. I detest dark chocolate. anyway. I am PAYING dearly. I hurt so bad. My back and leg have major pain. And sitting is the worst, so of course

Bgf, Creep Shield, And Bone Edges

Funny to realize that going "against the grain" for years has opened my palate to foods I never would've enjoyed BGF (before gluten free). Baked goods with nuts. I liked some nuts BGF, but never baked into stuff. Now, I love Pamela's ch.chip cookies with walnuts and Trader Joe's Flourless Chocolate Walnut cookies, which taste more like brownies to me. Even when I bake my Namaste or The Craving's Place brownies, I put walnuts on top! I even made green beans with sliced almonds. I like Almond

Fooled The Experts

My celiac support group was SHOCKED about Lawry's seasoning salt glutening me. They seemed in disbelief, so they looked it up in the celiac's gluten free product list and it wasn't listed in there! I can't believe I was right! It's very nice how they have a book cart full of celiac and gluten free books for checkout. I checked out Against the Grain, which is supposed to be funny as well as informative.Bringing a dish for work breakfast Friday: deviled eggs with bacon and cheddar! Bringing a

How I Stay Fit

I don't drink coffee, eat fattening things like cheesecake/creme brulee, fast food, or much red meat. But I DO claim sugar as my vice. After 10 years of teaching, I'm the same size, and colleagues often ask me how I do it. Here are some ideas as well as Things I do to trim down for bikini season (my summer clothes are a size smaller than my winter ones- it's a midwestern thing, we're very season-oriented):   Make sure you're only eating until you're NOT HUNGRY anymore, then GET UP (I feel

Reply To A Nebulous Newbie

Dear Newly Diagnosed Celiac, Gluten Free Living is a Journey...   Try to remember-it's the rainy days that help us appreciate the sunny ones. Maybe reading gluten free books, blogs, or message boards could help validate your feelings and give you eating ideas. Sometimes, your mind will jump to plenty of excuses of why you can't or why the ideas seem unrealistic, but try to focus on the "can" and the "I'll try" attitude.     Yes, I had a hard time eating the gluten free baked goods and stuf

Dysfunctional Thanksgiving: Quick Hit Rehash

Totally Gluten-Free turkey day again, but this time at my newly purchased house with my Major's mother and my mom&stepdad all in from Florida We did lots of fix-it stuff on my new house (bank repo) Parents woke at 4am (FL time 7am) and went to 24 hr Wal-Mart to buy me "appropriate" dishes and silverware (they said mine isn't heavy enough) for my belated birthday and early xmas gifts.   My stepdad forgot to take his blood pressure meds on Tuesday (day 3)and blew his top and went MIA in t

Silly Yak

I rode the Silly Yak and avoided a gluten attack. As I suspected and expected, my midwest jaunt to spend quality time with my grandma (and mother and aunt- all of us traveled from both coasts and gathered in one tiny house with my grandma's mentally disabled brother- in support of my grandma's terminal diagnosis with cancer) did turn out to be ultra celiac-friendly. The marvelous trip to Bunky's Pizza (Madison, WI, area) where I indulged in fabulous gluten-free pizza-I chose shrimp and swapped

Nightblindness

My eye doctor is HOT! He has amazing hazelish eyes...AND I've adored him ever since he told me that I'll never need glasses full time (I wear them to see in the dark or driving at night) because I only have night blindness. And YOU KNOW I love that cuz HOW MANY teachers do you know without glasses? I mean, going through all that college and the graduate school can really wreak havoc on the eyeballs, ya know? People OFTEN assume I wear contacts (even colored contacts-what a compliment!) since

125 Plan

Celiacs qualify for the 125 plan at work where you pretax spending! I get to pretax the DIFFERENCE of cost in gluten free items and regular gluteny items of similar food types. I'm about to sign up for it. I have to get a letter from my doctor to qualify me. The woman also told me I have to get a copy of a price list from a grocery store to show comparable gluten versions of the stuff I buy. BOY does that sound FUN!! Well, at least I used the 125 plan a couple years ago for my few but expe

You, Too?

Whenever people inquire about why I don't eat bread or why I'm eating what I'm eating, I give a generic response that I'm allergic to flour and it's hidden in everything---Just so people don't think I'm another FRUITY or NUTTY California Tree hugger and/or hypochondriac. But some people ask more about it and then I explain that it's not an anaphylactic allergy and that it's a genetic disease that is highly undiagnosed due to the wide range of symptoms and the ignorance of doctors who misdiag

Pumpkin Cake, Pizza Fusion, And Pecos Bill

Had fun at the celiac support meeting. You can pretend you went- a virtual meeting- here: One lady had amazing pumpkin bread (light and moist and fluffy and SOFT) that she made out of her Vitamix (some fancy blender) recipe book that she modified for gluten free. Said it was easy. She traded me her leftover cake for my leftover peanut butter cookies from Whole Foods A college girl told us about some cookie ice cream from Good Karma she loves-it's soy based? Another one said she's had great

I'm Baa-aack!

Aloha! I'm back on the blog and back home. I went to Jamaica in Jan. and again in Feb. and just returned from 11 days on Kauai! I also went to the Super Bowl. I've been having tons of fun, as well as tons of stress, and not much gluten! Let's get you up-to-date: I flew to San Antonio over Turkey Day 2008 and the city was kindof a letdown. The RiverWalk seemed to be the only draw and I wasn't too impressed. I was shocked that my best friend (I hate the acronym bff) whom I like to call M
