ARCHIVED Want To Buy A Bread Machine
hineini replied to Suzie-GFfamily's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Great thread. I'm seriously thinking of splurging and putting the Zoji on my credit card (bad, bad Hineini!) -
ARCHIVED Bow-tie Noodles?
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks! I found them (Tinkyada shells) at whole foods today - Yay! -
ARCHIVED Recipe Request: Knishes!
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Nancy - Hm, That doesn't make any sense, as latkes are potato pancakes, made of potatos and eggs. They don't involve any kind of paper or wrapper. I'm wondering what food you might be thinking of... Hm... I wish I could find all-rice wonton wrappers! I love wontons and miss them. -
ARCHIVED Ricola Cough Drops
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ricola Natural Herb Cough Drops - The web site says they contain less than 0.01% gluten but are not guaranteed gluten-free. Which means had I been thinking (instead of having my head full of snot from a yucky cold) I would not have bought them. BUt I was an idiot and didn't think to check on the cough drops to make sure they were gluten-free. And I just used... -
ARCHIVED Bow-tie Noodles?
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think that medium-sized shells might be the best bet, actually - Wonder which brand tastes the most like wheat pasta and keeps a good consistency when reheated? So far Tinkyada is my favorite but i don't know if they make shells -
ARCHIVED Recipe Request: Knishes!
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
That sounds perfect! I will definitely try that. Nope, no knish recipe - But I have an honorary uncle who owned a knish bakery (yes, that's all he made!) for years and I will eventually try to get the recipe from him. To answer the other poster's question: Open Original Shared Link I nearly had a heart-attack when I saw they compared Knishes to... -
ARCHIVED Recipe Request: Knishes!
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I was thinking a gluten-free pizza dough might be the right consistency. OK, I hereby make a promise: I WILL figure out a way to make us knishes. You have my word. It may take a while, but I will do it! -
ARCHIVED Bow-tie Noodles?
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm trying to make a traditional Ashkenazi Jewish dish called kasha varnishkes - It's a pilaf of sorts... made from carmelized onions, toasted buckwheat groats, and bowtie noodles. I have yet to find a gluten-free bowtie noodle - Has anyone seen them? Do they exist? If not, can you think of a shape of noodle that would come the closest to the consistency... -
I miss knishes so bad... The baked kind, not the fried kind you get from a NYC hot dog stand, although either would do. I'm sure it's not hard to make the potato filling... But I'm not sure what kind of gluten-free dough to use. Any ideas? Has anyone tried to make a gluten-free knish before? I'm convinced it can be done.

ARCHIVED In Need Of A gluten-free Laxative
hineini replied to sparkles's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I too have the problem of having had explosive D but now being plagued by C since becoming gluten-free! My solutions: -Another vote for the Smooth Moove Tea from Traditional Medicinals. I brew it strongly - I leave it to steep for at least 15 minutes with a lid over the cup. Drink it before bed, and I will almost always have a nice soft BM in the morning... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pizza Now Available In The Sf Bay Area (ca)
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Socca Oven is yummy, but it's really nothing like pizza. It's totally delicious, however. I haven't tried PIzza Rustica yet but when I do I'll let you all know how it is. -
ARCHIVED Northern Ca / San Francisco Bay Area?
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
They have a non-dairy cheese you can choose, but it has casein in it. You can also choose to not have any cheese at all, of course. I'm pretty sure that the crust is dairy-free but you should check with them. OMG Luka's is one of my favorites! The thing is, what I really like there is their french fries, and I don't think they're made in a dedicated... -
ARCHIVED Apples
hineini replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Having grown up in NY apple country I can tell you that it is totally normal for certain apples to have pinkish or reddish tint on the flesh even after you peel them - What looks like dye that's bled through is just pigment. That's not to say that there aren't apples that are died (I wouldn't be surprised if there were). But I wouldn't assume that's the... -
ARCHIVED Northern Ca / San Francisco Bay Area?
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi Gina & Munchkinette! Nice to meet local folks. The Yahoo group is probably the best way to connect but it's nice to know there are other locals here on the forum as well. BTW, tried to order the gluten-free pizza from Pizza Rustica last night and they don't deliver to my neighborhood. Too bad I don't have a car. Guess I'll have to go and eat in... -
ARCHIVED Anyone In Northern Ca / Bay Area?

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pizza Now Available In The Sf Bay Area (ca)
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Guess what, Bay Area folks? We can now go out for pizza! Not only that, but THEY DELIVER! Pizza Rustica is now serving I Can Eat That gluten-free crusts. They are available at their Rockridge location and if they do well there, they will become available at the Montclair location. Just call ahead for the 'wheat free' crust to be sure they are in stock... -
ARCHIVED Please Say That Someone Has Experienced This!
hineini replied to rutland's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have many of those symptoms, too - Neurological exams have ruled out MS. I have been told I have Fibromyalgia (FMS), Allodynia and Migratory Parasthesias. I wouldn't be shocked to find out that some of the numbness and tingling were due to malabsorption problems (I've never been tested for B12 deficiency but plan on asking to be tested soon since it's common... -
ARCHIVED Whoooooaaahh -- Panic Attacks And Bloating Whenever I Eat
hineini replied to eleep's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi there - Sorry you're going through all this. I know how it is to deal with health stuff on top of all kinds of huge life stressors. Hang in there! Your post made me think of something.. I have panic and anxiety disorders, I used to be on medication for them athough they are fairly under control these days save for now and then (once a month or so... -
ARCHIVED Product Review: Best Biscotti / Cookie Ever!
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link I bought the Cinnamon Toast Biscotti a few weeks ago at Piedmont Grocery, a somewhat upscale but mainstream (not health food) grocery store in Oakland, CA. I was immediately hooked. These are all natural, and are made locally but are shipped nationally (internationally?) via their website. The brownies are good, too - Very... -
ARCHIVED My Email Response From Gardenburger
hineini replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is great news! I've never had the black bean but it sure sounds good. I have their wheat-free vegan gardenburgers in my freezer right now, they have oats in them but no wheat - When I'm done with them I want to only buy ones that are truly and completely gluten-free... so this info is helpful. Thanks! -
I have never used a bread machine. All I know is I want one that doesn't make those huge wierd round loaves. I am as much of a bread machine newbie as it gets, but I"m accepting that I"m probably going to be gluten-free for life regardless of my test results so I better start baking 'cause those pre-made breads are just too pricy. So, please tell me...

ARCHIVED Bell & Evans Gluten Free Chicken Nuggets
hineini replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was so excited after reading about these, I went to my Whole Foods (Berkeley, CA) to find them and... Sadness, they have no wheat-free chicken nuggets. I will have to request they order them next time I go in, and request all the local gluten-free people I know to do the same! -
ARCHIVED Challah Bread - Anyone Have A Recipe?
hineini replied to ArtGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm so glad I found this thread! I am definitely going to try Bette Hagman's recipe, cause I miss challah so bad. -
ARCHIVED Itching (but No Rash) After Glutening
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh wow - I'm not alone! Yes I'm sure I was glutened via a) the marinade for the chicken, the beans or c) the broth the rice was made in. Either way, I won't be eating there again (sadly) I'm kind of relieved to know that it could be gluten-related and I'm not just going crazy! I will take some Benadryl tonight - The itching is bad, and it... -
Last night I went out to a local mexican joint, and ordered grilled chicken with rice and refried beans. Last time I ate there I got sick, but I assumed it was from the tortillas since they are made on the same press as the flour ones, and since corn sometimes makes my tummy unhappy. This time I didn't eat the tortillas. I still got sick. By sick...
