ARCHIVED Flour Master List
hineini replied to queenofhearts's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
OMG, I'm a cookbook slut too! A non-monogamous one, at that! -
I was on Elavil/amitryptiline for Fibromyalgia and sleep disorder. It helped a tiny bit with the pain, and a lot with the sleep. It also made me have EXTREMELY vivid dreams/nightmares and very groggy during the day. You're on a very low dose. If you're having hallucinations or disorienting sensations... You need to CALL YOUR DOC IMMEDIATELY (and most...

ARCHIVED Anyone In Northern Ca / Bay Area?
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Cool - Thanks for sharing. I never go up to Davis but if I ever do I'll check it out. Has anyone been to Cafe Gratitude? I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of their foods are gluten-free. They're in SF & Berkeley -
ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Before Blood Test? Please Help!
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for your concerns. Unfortuantely it looks like getting tested will be what makes the most sense right now, as my doctor included celiac disease tests on a whole panel of other bloodwork I'm getting done. I know he will support me being gluten-free (if not also diagnosing me celiac disease) due to my positive results from a gluten-free diet. I don't... -

ARCHIVED Maltodextrin?
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Friends brought some corn chips (can't remember the brand, but they were salsa-flavored) to my birthday picnic. [Yes, I'm turning 25 on Wednesday!]. I was about to eat them, then thought to check the ingredients. One was "Maltodextrin." I said "sorry, I can't eat them." Then my friend pointed to the side of the package where they said "GLUTEN FREE". I... -
I never get to Cupertino (I don't have a car and live in Oakland) but I LOVE hearing about things like this, especially near home

ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Before Blood Test? Please Help!
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just got off the phone with the doctor. He said: -I shouldn't eat gluten if it makes me sick -"The proof is in the pudding" (I.e. the fact that I feel so much better on a gluten-free diet means *something* is up, likely Celiac, and I shouldn't be eating gluten) and last, but not least.. -No, I don't need to eat gluten in order for the antibodies... -
ARCHIVED Just A Shake Of My Head
hineini replied to jennyj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Interesting - I'm having epidural steroid injections into my spine later this month (no general anesthesia or anything) and those are categorized as 'surgery'... I even have to go in for a separate "pre-op" and "post-op" appointment! I think anything where they put you under would definitely be in an even more "serious" category since there are risks involved... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test
hineini replied to celiackids's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am quite lactose intolerant, sometimes even reacting to Lactaid milk or dairy products taken along with Lactaid pills. I'm doing Enterolab testing and am now gluten-free so I should find out soon if the lactose intolerance is actually a casein intolerance, or if it's just a side effect of celiac disease. However, I've been lactose intolerant since childhood... -
ARCHIVED This Is Hell :(
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks. That is reassuring. And I think she's right! Why is it necessary to make someone sick in order to verify that they're sick? Guess what? I just shelled out $589 (on my credit card - Just after I'd finally paid all my CC's off! Bah ) for the full Enterolab tests for celiac disease, soy, yeast, milk and eggs. *Phew* I will finally have... -
ARCHIVED This Is Hell :(
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, that didn't last long. As you'll see in my sig I gave up on the gluten challenge. I called my doc and asked him to call me back so we can discuss. But I don't think I can agree to go back on gluten just for the purpose of a diagnosis. I"ve been gluten-free again since Saturday afternoon and damned if I don't feel WAY better. -
ARCHIVED Propoxyphene-n 100 W/apap 650 Tabs (darvocet)
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Franceen - Thanks! I am not Kosher, either - But I don't eat pork or shellfish and I try not to combine dairy and meat when possible. You're right about gluten-free being a mitzvah to one's health! How confusing re: Darvocet. I guess I will, contact the pharmacy, and then also contact Qualitest. How annoying! Thansk for the help -
ARCHIVED Propoxyphene-n 100 W/apap 650 Tabs (darvocet)
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Does anyone know how I can find out if my medication is gluten-free? It is Propoxyphene-N 100 W/APAP 650 Tabs - The generic for Darvocet. The manufacturer is QUALITEST. I found a gluten-free drug list that listed this drug (Propoxyphene-N) but it had a different manufacturer. Do I have to contact the mfr? Thanks -
ARCHIVED "modified Food Starch" In Curly Fries... What Do You Think?
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They include the coating on the fries. They are reddish/brown in color and crunchy. Sounds like "food starch" is too ambiguous to have any confidence that it's gluten-free. -

ARCHIVED Sour Taste In Mouth After Eating Gluten?
hineini posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Does anyone else get a really awful, persistent (lasting hours) sour taste in their mouth after eating gluten? Is this a Celiac thing or does everyone who eats wheat get this? I have been trying to eat gluten in order to prepare to have a blood test done, and this taste in my mouth is so gross! -
ARCHIVED Uncomfortable (literally) Question
hineini replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh man, I have BEEN THERE! And fortunately am not too embarassed to talk about it ;-P I thought I had hemmorhoids, due to itching and burning and pain around the anus, pain while going to the bathroom, and also sometimes blood on the toilet paper. However, I got a flexible sigmoidoscopy (with totally clean results) and the doc said what he thinks is that... -
ARCHIVED This Is Hell :(
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi All, Thank you so much for the support. It means so much to me, you have no idea. First of all, I'm so sorry... I cut and pasted this post from my blog, without re-reading it so I didn't realize I'd used a rather crass swear word in it. As you can see, I've edited it out! Apologies. I am 95% confident that my (main) problem is gluten, because... -
Today I started my gluten challenge. The wheatey things I ate: One chocolate croissant. Three "Petit Ecolier" chocolatey French cookie things. Lots of sushi, complete with lots of wheat-containing soy sauce. Hell, I tell you. Acid indigestion, heartburn, unbelievable gas, diarrhea, bloating, stomach cramps, a sour taste in my mouth. Yeah, I know...

ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Before Blood Test? Please Help!
hineini replied to hineini's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
See my separate post entitled "This is hell." I can't do this. I feel way too sick. I'm going to have to do the blood tests on a gluten-free diet and if they come up negative, I"ll just send for the stool test. I simply CANNOT live through this hell for 2-3 months. BTW, to respond to the question, I responded well - Total stop of diarrhea (in fact I... -
ARCHIVED Challah? (jewish Braided Egg Bread)
hineini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Does anyone have a recipe for challah? THanks! -
I was at a local hamburger place called Barney's, and they have the most delicious curly fries (a/k/a spicy fries). I asked to see the ingredients and they gave me a printout. One of the ingredients was "modified food starch." According to some lists, in the US "modified food starch" is almost always gluten-free. Would you trust this? Since I don't yet...

ARCHIVED Teff
hineini replied to kabowman's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Teff is gluten-free. It's very very nutritious and tasty. Injera, the ethiopian flat-bread that most Ethiopian and Eritrean food is served on/with, is made from teff. Traditionally, in Ethiopia, it is made ENTIRELY from teff and is therefore gluten-free. However, I was very sad to find out from the owner of one of the yummy nearby Ethiopian joints,... -
I'd love to share tips on where to eat, if anyone's out there. There's a new place in Berkeley called Socca Oven that's supposed to be entirely gluten-free. Has anyone tried it out? Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link They say on their site "Everything served at Socca Oven is gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast and sugar free, yet still...
