ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Gemini replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Congratulations on finding a good doctor who appears more interested in the welfare of his young patient than putting her through more testing that wasn't needed! Now all you have to do is figure which side of the family it came from....it could be both, as in my family. You may want to have the gene testing done to determine this. The gene testing and Celiac... -
ARCHIVED Low Dose Allergen Immunotherapy
Gemini replied to PaulaJ's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have been receiving allergy shots for about 10 years now.....about once every 4-5 weeks for maintenance. They have helped tremendously for my sinus symptoms. I used to get sinus infections all the time and about 2 years into the shots, these stopped. I still have trouble when the allergins are at high levels (I am allergic to mold, dust mites and tree... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Cold Hands
Gemini replied to farmer's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Cold hands are generally not a problem that is caused by giving up or eating gluten, however, there are related conditions that will cause this. I am the queen of cold hands and feet so know quite a bit about this subject. Sjogren's Syndrome, a related disorder, can cause the problem. It's 2 major symptoms are dry mouth and eyes but it is considered... -
Thank you so much for posting your story....it has given me hope! I am going to turn the magic 50 this year and was pessimistic about being able to regain bone density after menopause. I just will absolutely not take biophosphonates because I will be having 2 dental implants down the road and do not want complications from that. I also take copious amounts...

ARCHIVED Is Your Whole Household Gluten Free?
Gemini replied to TJ060306's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My husband is not gluten-free and has his own supply of food for breakfast and lunch. My kitchen is as un-contaminated as a totally gluten-free household. Of course, this might not be the case in a family with small children but I don't have that worry. It can be done very successfully, if people put some effort into it. It all depends on family members... -
ARCHIVED Does The Spouse Really Understand
Gemini replied to Mally-bug's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Blood tests CAN and DO definitively diagnose Celiac Disease but as you know, it all depends on what stage of the game you are in or whether or not you have celiac disease vs. GS. The medical profession have not developed tests for GS yet because there are just too many doctors who refuse to believe the condition is real. I should clarify that the doctors... -
ARCHIVED If This Is True, I'm Gonna Freak
Gemini replied to MarsupialMama's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Sounds like an urban legend, to be honest, and untrue. I know some waxes are used on some fruits to prolong shelf life and protect them but there is no gluten in that. Besides, I eat tons of veggies and fruits on a daily basis and if there was gluten on them, I would be in the hospital by now. If there was any wheat used in this, it would have to be listed... -
ARCHIVED Synthroid
Gemini replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wowzer...I use bio-identical hormones, which are rubbed into your forearm and they are gluten-free. They are formulated to be absorbed through the skin so I double checked and the compounding pharmacy was great about it. Not sure if you are still interested in using them but it's a great, and safer, I think, alternative! -
ARCHIVED Synthroid
Gemini replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think the problem with Synthroid is that they claim they can no longer guarantee their product is gluten-free. They may be afraid of liability considering they do not test for gluten content. They shouldn't have to test if they use decent, gluten-free fillers instead of crappy cheap ones! Anything to save a buck and increase profit. I am just guessing on... -
ARCHIVED Synthroid
Gemini replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was the one who posted about Synthroid not being able to guarantee gluten-free status. I got my information from glutenfreedrugs.com, as this is the site that I use to check for gluten-free status in meds. I personally use Levoxyl myself, which is the generic form of Synthroid. It works beautifully for me and costs very little....about $20.00 for a 2 month... -
Thanks, Frec! I have osteopenia and currently am using bio-identical hormones, plus a boatload of calcium with Vit. D and magnesium. I remain active as much as I can fit in and all this will have to do because the meds they push on you create far more problems than they are worth. I think the most important thing to do is to remain active and flexible...

ARCHIVED Help! Test Results...
Gemini replied to beansmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Canker sores or blisters are very common with celiac disease and are a definite link. Some companies that do gene or blood testing for celiac disease will ask you this on questionnaires. I had canker sores for years on my mouth and tongue, plus I have autoimmune thyroid disease. You also do not have to have flaming GI symptoms with celiac disease.....it's... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Gemini replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I couldn't agree with you more, Fiddle-Faddle! Blood work is extremely accurate in more advanced stages of celiac disease but, unfortunately, for those suffering from gluten sensitivity vs full blown Celiac, it can be a mine field. The vast majority of patients who test positive on the biopsy are at end stage of the disease and have a lot of intestinal damage... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Cross Contamination
Gemini replied to GFinBC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am not sure it is a function of being sensitive. All Celiacs are sensitive and should exercise caution and good handling practices when exposed to gluten. Apparently, you have a system that works and you are not being glutened by feeding your dogs bread. You wouldn't be glutened, unless you ate it or didn't wash your hands after handling it. That's the... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Cross Contamination
Gemini replied to GFinBC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think Marianne already has a diagnosis....she had positive blood work. That is a diagnosis, if the numbers are out of range. Even considering the wait times in Canada for biopsies, I think at that point it would be used to gauge how she is healing, if she chooses to have it done at all. It would be impossible to see damaged villi after 18 months gluten... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Cross Contamination
Gemini replied to GFinBC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anything made of wood or with a porous surface should really be tossed out and new ones bought. I admit that I refused to replace my cookware because it's very expensive and I just will not replace an expense that big. I use the Le Creuset cookware, which is cast iron but it's coated with enamel. Plain cast iron is very porous but I have using mine now for... -
ARCHIVED Confused About Cross Contamination
Gemini replied to GFinBC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Marianne, Welcome to the Celiac world.......I know it probably feels overwhelming right now but you will get the hang of it and it won't seem so bad. You will have some work to do considering that you have young children who are too young to understand the cross contamination issue but if you use good common sense and safe practices, you will find... -
ARCHIVED Thyroid And Soy
Gemini replied to Jenny (AZ via TX)'s topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I would have to agree with this! I love veggies and eat a lot of broccoli and other goitrogenic foods and my thyroid function has actually gotten better this past year. I was able to cut out the compounded T3 hormone I was taking and I may be able to lower my Levoxyl dosage if my autoimmune numbers improve again the next time around. I also drink about ... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Turn Down A Biopsy For Their Child?
Gemini replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, and we all know Celiacs who have suffered for years with a mis-diagnosis are just too plain stupid to think for themselves and know what tests are necessary for them. The woman who questioned the doctor originally was correct......the doctor couldn't give her a good reason to do an endoscopy on a 2 year old and her son has responded very well to the... -
ARCHIVED Fsa Reimbursement For Gluten-free Foods
Gemini replied to I'm a glutant's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I never bothered and actually dumped my FSA account for 2009 because they are such a pain in the butt as far as keeping records and filing a claim for reimbursement! A person should not have to account for every expenditure at time of purchase. It created a mountain of paperwork, which is stupid considering this is the computer age. It may just be the company... -

ARCHIVED Starbucks Gluten Free
Gemini replied to HannahHannah's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Silk soy milk is definitely gluten-free.....I have verified it with the company directly and read the ingredients listing myself. This is for the US. The mix used to make Chai latte's is also gluten-free....again, I contacted Starbuck's directly and read the ingredients listing. As for the way it is steamed, the Starbuck's around here use separate pitchers... -
ARCHIVED Endomysial Ab (ttg) Retest
Gemini replied to daveray's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am a bit confused about your tests....the EMA or Endomysial is a separate test from the tTg, which would be testing for villi damage. The EMA is just a positive or negative result which, if positive, means you have celiac disease....no other disease can cause a positive on this. However, if your tTg is still high, it means there is still damage going on... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Goodies
Gemini replied to Cupcakery's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oats are safe for many Celiacs as long as they are certified gluten-free oats. As long as customers know they are buying a particular food that contains gluten-free oats, they can make that decision for themselves. I have no problems consuming oats and I'm sure many like me would be thrilled to have a gluten-free bakery that will use oats in their goodies... -
ARCHIVED Please Help: Chickenpox And Oatmeal Bath
Gemini replied to staceyh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This opinion may not be popular on this forum but it's the correct information, Stacey. Gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin so taking an oatmeal bath will not cause anyone to be glutened. However, as your son has autism it may be difficult to give him an oatmeal bath without the risk of it getting into his mouth and swallowing it. That is the only...
