  1. I'm sorry you are feeling so down, Kiki. You are emotional because you were so sick and that happens. I had that happen once.....it was 2 years before I was diagnosed and I was unstable and didn't realize how sick I actually was. I felt fine but it didn't take much to throw me off. I had a sugar reaction to a pre-dinner drink in a restaurant (which had...
  2. Take a look at this interesting article: Open Original Shared Link My allergies are not that much better 8 years post gluten-free but I have to admit, I only react now when allergen levels are really bad. Then I have the typical reaction. I am not allergic to cats, though.
  3. I have to clarify some misinformation here.......Celiac Disease can kill some people if you have a severe enough case of it and do not discover you have it or do not follow the gluten free diet, once diagnosed. Not everyone gets to the point where they have enough damage to end up with severe malnutrition. Not everyone ends up with cancer from it...that...
  4. Those are awesome! You cannot go wrong with either Schar or Glutino! I am such a cookie monster......I like cookies better than anything else.
  5. I am not saying it doesn't happen but I am just skeptical. I think the medical world overthinks a lot today. Could it just be that your mind is upset over the profound change you have to make to your diet and lifestyle so that translates into physical symptoms? It is much the same as when people quit smoking. You are depriving your body of what it is...
  6. I could not have said it better than IrishHeart did! Whole grains are harder to digest anyway, like meat is. There are also people who do not do well with grains because of a number of factors but the vast majority of grains are not a problem for most people, Celiac or not. For those who are new to the gluten-free diet and still healing, it may be awhile...
  7. I cannot completely 100% confirm this BUT how would a soldier eat MRE's in the field if they were Celiac? My neighbor had a son who was discharged from boot camp for having an asthma like attack from the mold he was exposed to in the Deep South, where he was doing basic training. He never reacted that badly before but he is from New England where the mold...
  8. I agree. This can be a good thing or a double edged sword. I just do not like the idea that all this personal information is easily accessable all the time. Then there is the problem of hacking but I don't even want to go there....makes my head spin. All I know is to be careful what you divulge to a doctor these days. You don't want anything you say to...
  9. Well...if Timmy goes down the well, there's Lassie to save him....silly! :D I understand your dilemma. I can be pretty hard on my jewelry that is worn in specific locations, like the wrist or sometimes, the fingers. I do really well with stud earrings, though..... Maybe the James Bond Medi-Alert might be a good fit? I would kill for some of...
  10. I was born in 1959 also, Laura...it was a good year! To answer your question.....there is no methadone for making symptoms any easier in transitioning to a gluten-free diet. That would be nice, wouldn't it? I am not sure there is actually a withdrawal, either. What I think is that you will not be entirely gluten-free once you stop eating gluten.....
  11. Not a good idea because even tiny amounts will aggravate your immune system so you will never calm it down until you stop gluten entirely....100%. I know that is not what you wanted to hear. There is no easy way around this problem, in the beginning.
  12. Laura......if you feel comfortable doing so, could you post your thyroid testing results? Doctors always just tell patients that their thyroid is fine but they may be going by old ranges that are out of date. It isn't all about the numbers, either. You have to treat by symptoms, on top of taking blood work for the numbers. I just had my results of my maintenance...
  13. OMG......this is what I do. You are so funny! Isn't it sad we have to do things this way? Although, my PCP is better than many and she does think outside the box. The problem I have with her is that she is more focused on screening tests than the 4 AI diseases I have. Her reply was that I am doing so well and as I know the diet inside and out, she needn...
  14. Hah! I have discovered the Glutino Oreo's. Oh my, they are good!
  15. This is one of the best analogies on behavior I have seen in a long time. I think this is the norm for most poeple who really have to avoid gluten but this was beautifully stated!
  16. Why would you think that you are doing damage to yourself if the food you are eating is gluten-free? If you feel good after the food you eat, and are recovering well, I wouldn't worry about it. I tend to stick to certified gluten-free foods but that does not mean there is gluten in non-certified gluten-free foods. Some companies do a great job of segregating...
  17. Kiki......you have a soy intolerance and going out to dinner with that intolerance is much, much harder than just gluten. Soy is used as an immulsifier in many foods and most people, without strong knowledge of food intolerances and food in general, usually miss that fact. Usually with gluten, you don't react quite as fast as that. It's not impossible...
  18. I never went through any withdrawal but I was very sick at diagnosis so I couldn't have gotten any worse than I was. But from what you describe, you really should have your thyroid tested because not being able to get out of bed screams of a hypo thyroid problem. It is common to Celiac and I have both myself. Stopping gluten can sometimes make other problems...
  19. Your sense of humor is as intact as ever! If your husband really thinks you need one, there must be a nice Medi-Alert bracelet out there with some diamonds for bling. Now THAT would be worth wearing!
  20. I think the issue would revolve around being in an emergency situation and taken to the hospital. That's where the need to access your medical records would be used. Everything is going to be centralized so access would supposedly be quick and they could get the information needed. I am assuming that most people with severe allergies and intolerances would...
  21. The electronic medical records will be accessable to all medical personel in hospitals and offices very soon. That was one of the major points of Obamacare. I don't agree with it but that is what will be implemented very soon. The fact that you just had that experience doesn't mean much as it hasn't been put into action 100% but trust me, it will. This...

    ARCHIVED Joint Pain?!

If you ate sprouted wheat bread, it contains a big gluten hit and yes, it will defintely cause joint pain. Hashi's thyroid disease also causes joint pain. Get back on track with the gluten free diet and the pain should go away. If not, get tested for thyroid disease, which is fairly common with Celiac/ gluten intolerance.
  23. About the tattoo thing.....this is something I will never understand with people. I would NEVER get a tattoo but have no issue if someone does. Everyone has the right to do what they want with their body but I must tell you, tattoo's are not professional at all. If you have a great job and want to look professional and have a tattoo that might show, I would...
  24. No...I beg to differ. It is not luck, but pure effort on my part....and yes, I will say it......I am just not paranoid. I have never let fear rule with this disease but based my habits on valid science. Science states that unless you are eating it, it should not be a problem for the vast majority of Celiacs. I also stated quite clearly that a person...
  25. rene.....Colorings and flavorings are not considered unsafe by the vast majority of sound Celiac organizations. You do have to read labels all the time but most flavorings and colors in the US do not contain wheat. So...the movie employees had no idea what they are talking about, which is not surprising. I have never heard of any Celiac that I know who...
