  1. Swollen lips and itchiness are hallmarks for an allergic reaction so I think this is much more likely than a Celiac reaction, although I am sure there will be someone who will argue the point. Even if your cat licked you after eating gluten in their food, you would have to somehow get that licked area into your mouth and I am not even going to start to...
  2. I guess there is some educating to do here......I would agree about the use of the word "syndrome", as in many cases, it can be used to identify a group of symptoms and then symptom treat. I asked my doctor why the use of "syndrome" vs. disease and this is what she told me. BTW...this is my functional medicine MD and not the mainstream kind that love to...
  3. Coconut milk has more saturated fat in it and for many, especially the newly diagnosed, they will have problems with that. I can also go to the one place where I can get gluten-free fried food and that agrees with me but there is less saturated fat in the way they cook it. But coconut milk does not agree with me, if I use too much. Fats can be an on going...
  4. The tax deduction in the US really isn't there. It falls under medical and now you have to reach 10% of your adjusted gross income to even be able to deduct it. Most people do not ever reach this minimum. It will also set you up for an audit and I certainly do not want to deal with the IRS. The amount of record keeping required to document true deductions...
  5. I don't know why people keep recommending coconut milk to those newly diagnosed Celiacs. It's all fat. It may be a healthier fat but fat is fat and when you are still healing, your body isn't absorbing fats like it should. I still have trouble with fattier foods and I've been 8 years gluten-free. I can eat some fat but in smaller amounts than most of...
  6. All GI doctors say everyone needs a colonoscopy and that certainly is not true. They make a lot of money from them so there is incentive for them. I think you have not been gluten-free very long and need to give it more time. Way more time than you may think is normal but that is more the norm for any Celiac. A couple of things......nutritional deficiencies...
  7. Heather......IBS is not a diagnosis. It is a set of symptoms that the docs give a cute moniker to and then they symptom treat it. if you have been told you have IBS, all they are saying is that your bowel is irritated....nothing more. I don't think you need to be told what you already know. The key is to finding out why your bowel is so irritated. ...

    ARCHIVED London

I have been to London many times and am going again in 6 weeks. I ate at Cote Bistro on my last trip in 2010 and the food was amazing. They did not have a gluten-free menu then but were more than accommodating. The waiter was from Italy and he knew exactly what to do. The breakfast there was also great. I usually rent a flat and cook in but my husband...
  9. I think it is time you stopped the name calling and grow up. You are whining and what Bartie said is true and spot on. This is a great support group for those who are willing to take constructive criticism when needed. We have a society who refuses to accept responsibility for their behavior and act like adults and you appear to be one of them. My...
  10. I share your frustration completely because not one of my large family has been tested or, I should say, some have but the doctors only checked tTg...one test and then because that was negative, they proclaimed loudly that they don't have "THAT"! I firmly believe that any illness which involves a change of food habits completely scares people and they don...
  11. Actually, Bartie gave you some good advice but, apparently, it wasn't what you wanted to hear. I would suggest that you and your boyfriend spend some quality time at home, reading and learning as much as you can about Celiac Disease from reputable souces like Celiac organizations and people like Dr. Peter Green or Dr. Alessio Fasano...both are leading experts...
  12. Restaurants are not required to cater to anyone with a food allergy and with everyone being so sue happy these days, it's a miracle that we have so many who strive to create good gluten-free food. It really depends on where you live and what kind of restaurant you go to. Rule of thumb for any Celiac is the higher end of a restaurant that you go to, the...
  13. Yeah...I saw that the other week and yes, sadly, I can believe they have. It's all about money and once something is classified as a disease, they can start collecting insurance money treating it. So all these people who are desperate to lose weight, will jump on the AMA band wagon of drugs and surgeries to re-plumb their innards so they can lose weight...
  14. Sorry but I do not agree with you on this one. It is most unprofessional to be all tattooed up and comparing tattoos to beards is apples and oranges. The "times change" mantra doesn't cut it either. Those are just excuses. Like I said, if this is what people think looks great, it's their body and they can do what they want. But when you have a job that...
  15. avivai.......yes, Hashi's is very closely connected to Celiac Disease, as is Type 1 diabetes. I have Hashi's and was diagnosed with that about 15 years before the Celiac diagnosis. After 8 years gluten-free, my antibodies have gone back to normal and my TPO count was 1200, where normal was anything under 40. I think what helps are a couple of things......
  16. Adding to what IrishHeart already said so well.......my sister does not like to cook. She makes mashed potatoes from a box. So....preparing food to the extent that I do, all those fresh veggies and fruits that need cutting up and cleaning and steaming.....it's just too much work for her. The whole thing about cc boggles her mind. She was the very first...
  17. You know what is incredibly annoying? People who do not get the answers that they want to hear and then accuse this forum of not being supportive. All of us"carpers" have given you correct information....sorry if you choose not to believe it from people who have been gluten free much longer than the OP. She made sweeping, broad statements about Mexican...
  18. I'm glad you two caught that mistake in Sara's post! Gliadin is one of the proteins found in wheat and has always been there. Saying it is a brand new thing, never before seen in the world is about as dramatic of a presentation of an error as I have ever heard. No one knows if GMO'd food is a health risk because, quite frankly, Europeans are just as...
  19. It's always funny to hear the different reactions that people get from different treatment options. The eye plugs did squat for me...no difference at all but the Restasis worked wonders. Go figure! Glad to hear you feel better but that will happen anyway once you remain gluten-free for a while. A lot of the symptoms of these issues overlap so figuring...
  20. I wish my sister would listen to me. She has Sjogren's and asthma...really bad asthma. I used to smoke and I can outclimb her on a flight of stairs. She needs an inhalor before she gets to the top. She is not overweight either. However, she works in a hospital and goes with the AMA and does not think outside the box...like they practice. She thinks going...
  21. Actually, many people who were diagnosed asthmatics have reported that their breathing problems all went away after some time on the gluten-free diet. They don't need inhalers or meds at all. I think there are many whose inflammation from undiagnosed Celiac shows up as breathing problems. It's all about inflammation. Get rid of the inflammation and the...
  22. I am afraid that what mbrookes said is the ugly truth...there are some people who just cannot be saved and, as hard as it is for you, you need to forget about helping them. I have the same problem with my family. I have a double celiac gene and that means it is on both sides of my family. I am loaded with people with tons of medical problems, all related...
  23. I still get that look when I try to go into too much detail with anyone about this diet and how to stay well. Get the white coat, people...and the large net!
  24. Renaye.....I have Sjogren's, Celiac, Hashi's and Reynaud's Syndrome. If you have one AI disease, including Celiac, it can raise your ANA. Most doctors do not know this, as hard as that is to believe. You sound like you have Sjogren's, most defintely, and having elevated ANA/Sjogren's does not mean in any way you will end up with Lupus or anything worse...
  25. Good post, Bartie! Very, very true and I couldn't have said it better. There is no fast track to wellness with this disease so you have to go about your regular life as best you can and deal with it. At some point, down the road, you will realize that things are getting much, much better.
