  1. This was discussed in this thread a week or so ago: Open Original Shared Link Putting together comments from a few months of reading this board: Celiac is not an allergy, it is an auto-immune disease/response to gluten. Some people are allergic to gluten. Some people have both celiac and a gluten allergy. Some people believe that a gluten allergy...
  2. I was planning to take guests to an upscale steakhouse. I e-mailed and received an answer as to what on their menu was gluten free. When I ordered, I told the waitress that I needed a salad with no crouton because of an allergy. She brought a salad with croutons. When I pointed it out to her, she picked up the salad and half-turned away and started picking...
  3. Since gluten is technically the protein on the grain, IF they can reliably separate the starch from the protein it is gluten-free. I've only been reading this board for about two months but it seems that celiac frequently comes combined with a wheat allergy and if you are one of those people you obviously shouldn't have the wheat starch either. We each...
  4. Who do you call for generic drugs? If the brand name equivalent is gluten-free can you reach any conclusion on the generic?
  5. Open Original Shared Link Celiac and gluten allergy aren't the same. See the discussion at the link above.
  6. I get a little confused by a lot of this but isn't there a subtle (at least to non-medical people) but significant difference in auto-immune response and allergy response? I mean in terms of what is actually happening to you, obviously both are bad. If there is a difference, can you have both a allergic and an auto-immune reaction to the same item? ...
  7. The Honeysuckle White are gluten free according to their website.
  8. The problem you have to watch for (in addition to the stuffing/gravy packets mentioned above), is pre-basted turkey. In that case you need to figure out what the solution that they are injecting as the basting contains. If you get a plain turkey it will be gluten-free, whether it is fresh, frozen or organic.
  9. Everyone on this board seems to have combinations of dietary restrictions but this version of Slim-Fast does say gluten free and lactose free on the can. I saw them at a local Wal-Mart yesterday but didn't purchase one.
  10. This is like most things, different people, different tastes. I didn't like Pamela's as well as the gluten-free pantry sandwich bread. This one gets such good reviews I might try again. I might have made a mistake somewhere in the prep. I didn't use a bread machine.
  11. Their gluten-free bakehouse sandwich bread is the best pre-baked. My preference is to bake the gluten-free pantry sandwich bread but theirs is the best of the pre-bakes. As always, personal preferences come into that since a lot of people recommend Amy's mix or the enjoy life pre-baked and I didn't like either.
  12. I live in Burke. If you haven't tried the Wegman's for groceries, I'd recommend it. Their store brands are well labeled for gluten-free. A new Whole Foods is being built in the Fair Lakes area. The Whole Foods in Springfield is a little cramped so I'm hoping the new one will be more spacious. Can't help with a doctor recommendation. I was diagnosed...
  13. Is the text of these cards available anywhere? I can see why they don't post it on the website - people could just make their own. Still, in some of the gluten-free books, they have samples of cards and they come off so threatening, I wouldn't serve anyone who presented one if it were my restaurant. It is a difficult balance to stressing the seriousness...
  14. We are all different but for me the fact that I don't have symptoms makes me more vigilent on avoiding gluten because I can't evaluate the impact but I know it is happening (to the extent that I trust the GI and test results).
  15. The article cited didn't mention aspartame. Where did you get that information? Not trying to be difficult but my whole point in this thread is that anyone can put anything they want on the internet which makes it difficult to make correct decisions. The obvious solution is to be very aware of who is putting the information out. On the MSG topic,...
  16. Your post supports the point I was making. You state that MSG is a known toxin in a post immediately following a post the cited a scientific study on the effects of varying amounts of MSG on self-described MSG-sensitive subjects. A google search for MSG returns on the first page, articles both for and against MSG including one from the FDA that doesn't...
  17. I'm new at this, diagnosed with celiac about a month ago. One of the most frustrating parts of this is the conflicting information. The above quote is from the Open Original Shared Link. It certainly isn't easy to figure out what to eat. Consider this article on Open Original Shared Link:
  18. Really? I thought MSG was a chemical compound added to food. While it can be added to food containing gluten that isn't the same as the MSG having gluten. Am I missing something? It is tricky reading these labels.
  19. Sorry this isn't more specific but a week or so ago there was a post on this board about making a crust out of coconut (maybe adding an egg). That would probably work fine as a cheesecake crust. I haven't tried it as I'm alse dealing with diabetic and weight-loss issues.
  20. I'll be visiting a friend in NC next week and he has suggest the Firebird Rocky Mountain Grill in Durham. I can't find anything on their website about special menus. I've e-mailed them. Does anyone have any experience with this restaurant? Thanks.
  21. I've been making the bread mixes without a bread machine. I have just been using regular mixer settings. My mixer takes dough hooks as an accessory. Would there be any advantage to using dough hooks with the mixes (Pamela's, Gluten-free pantry)?
  22. Thanks for the update. I went to Artie's last night. They didn't have a laminated gluten-free menu but the waiter brought me several sheets of paper containing the entire menu color coded with respect to gluten. Not in my budget for everyday but I took my wife to Ruth's Chris for our anniversary last week and they had a special gluten-free menu there...
  23. Relatively new here but one concern that I've seen several times has to do with a fear of celiac being mistaken for just another fad diet. There is a book with a title something like "the blood type diet" that assigns food based on the blood type. For Type O, wheat is the big thing to avoid. I've only skimmed the book but the explanation of where the various...
  24. The Wrigley website lists the Creme-Savers product line on their gluten-free list. I saw a package labeled "Desserts" with three flavors: Apple Pie a la Mode, Cinnamon Bun and Stawberry Cheesecake. The ingredient list didn't list anything with gluten but did include "artificial and natural flavors". I generally don't have symptoms when I have a little...
  25. This thread is sort of my concern as a newly diagnosed celiac. If you had asked me before the testing, I would have told you I had no symptoms. After thinking about this for a while, I realized that there were many times over the years that I felt slightly nauseous a few hours after eating with no known reason. I just got biopsy results on two days ago...
