ARCHIVED For Those Who Bake Their Own Bread
ptkds replied to MyMississippi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This is the one I have right now: Open Original Shared Link The plastic case was broken, but I didn't want to use it anyway. I slice my bread in there everytime. It is starting to get torn up, though because i use it so much. So, soon I am getting this one: Open Original Shared Link I like the wooden bottom. It won't tear up as much as the plastic one... -
ARCHIVED Dd Has Had Vomiting And Diarrhea Off And On
ptkds posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 10 yr old dd (the only child of mine not diagnosed w/ Celiac) has been waking up with bad diarrhea and vomiting for a few months now. It only happens about once every 2 wks or so. Her tummy hurts for about half the day after these episodes. At first I though it was a lactose problem, so she started taking those children's lactaid pills. But it happened... -
ARCHIVED Is Asian Rice Flour Really Safe?
ptkds posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was just reading (again) about the recent pet food recall because of melamine (sp?) in the wheat, but it also said it was in the rice protein. I buy Asian Rice flour all the time that is imported from places like Thailand, Asia, and China. I know lots of other people on here do too. So, have these products ever been tested for quality? I am starting to... -
ARCHIVED Cheerios Substitutes
ptkds replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I used Baby Mum Mums. They have some dairy, though, but I don't know if you are restricting that or not. I found them at Wal-Mart in the baby-toddler food section. We also used Dora stars and the dried fruits. Check the gerber snacks. I think (I may be wrong, though) that the fruit puffs are gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED A Poll Of Sorts
ptkds replied to Worriedtodeath's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Two of my dd's were diagnosed w/ Celiac under 2 yrs old. My older toddler was 16 months old. She only had a blood panel done. It was barely positive. I opted not to get the biopsy because I didn't want her to have to get an IV, and also because I was diagnosed w/ it. If I hadn't been diagnosed, we would have had the biopsy. My younger dd had the endoscope... -
ARCHIVED Kc Masterpiece Bbq Sauce?
ptkds replied to ptkds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Vinegar is usually fine, unless it is Malt vinegar. What usually makes a BBQ sauce unsafe is the flavorings. CC is also a big issue, too. KC Masterpiece is not safe. We use Kraft or Cattlemens now. ptkds -
I recently figured out that I have a problem with eggs. I was still getting diarrhea and stomach pain and gas. But when I got glutened, my symptoms were alot worse. Cutting back on eggs has helped me alot. I can only tolerate a few eggs that are baked into something. But I can't eat scrambled eggs or undercooked eggs (such as in a batter). All the other...

ARCHIVED What Dry Cereals Have You Found
ptkds replied to jmomee99's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We use Cocoa Pebbles and Trix daily! Read ingredients, and watch out for Malt and oat flour. those are common. -
Yep, pretty normal. That is how I found out. The nurse at my dr's office called me and said the test was positive, and that was it. I have talked to my dr since, and he admits that I know more than he does, and I can find all I need to know on the internet. Doctors are good at giving the wrong advice, too. So it is better to do your own research.

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Pantry French Bread Mix
ptkds replied to Joni63's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a box of that mix. I haven't made it yet, but on my box it has directions on how to use a heavy duty mixer and the oven. They are located just below the directions for the bread machine. If you need them, let me know. I can type them up for you. ptkds -
This place is the best place I could think of to post this. I hope you guys can help me!! This morning, I was taking my meds. I can only take 1 pill at a time because I have a pretty sensitive gag reflex. So I popped my mag oxide pill into my mouth and took a drink of water. I gagged on the water, and when I coughed, I inhaled the pill. This pill has no...

ARCHIVED An Interesting Tidbit I Found!
ptkds replied to darlindeb25's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just looked up the Innova food, and it contained barley. So I looked up the Iams, and it looks gluten-free to me. I think we may switch to that food so I don't have to worry about my toddlers eating it! You know toddlers have to taste everything! We have a big gate up right now seperating our kitchen from the rest of the house because that is where we have... -
Recently I have noticed I have a problem with eggs. They make my stomach upset and give me diarrhea. This morning, my DH made our younger 2 dd's some scrambled eggs for breakfast. Our 2 yr old didn't seem too interested in them, but she still ate quite a bit of them. A little while later, she suddenly started crying and holding her tummy. She doesn't speak...

ARCHIVED Walmart
ptkds replied to almostnrn's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wal-Marts peanut butter is not gluten-free because it is processed in a plant that also processes wheat. (If you remember the peanut butter recall recently, the Peter Pan pb was recalled along w/ the wm brand because they are manufactured in the same plant, so be careful!) Go look on their canned fruit, sour cream, cream cheese, etc. It will state gluten... -
ARCHIVED Help! Need Bread Crumbs
ptkds replied to Tephie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Well, if you can find any gluten-free corn flakes, you can crush those up to make bread crumbs and add some seasoning. I just make my own from the left over bread pieces. I store them in the freezer until the bag is full, then I bake them until toasted and throw them in the food processor with my seasonings. ptkds -
Yep, Tinkyada is the best gluten-free pasta. You can order it from Vitacost.com for about $2.69 a pkg, and shipping is a flat rate. So if you order alot at once, you save a bundle. We usually use asian noodles, though. You have to play around to find the ones you like, but they are less than $1 a bag. Just be careful because some of them do contain wheat...

ARCHIVED Soem People Here Who Bake Their Own Glutenfree Breads?
ptkds replied to ShayBraMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I regularly use rice flour (I get mine at an asian store where it is extremely cheap and it is a very fine texture which is what Bette Hagman reccomends), tapioca starch, potato starch, xanthan gum, gelatin, dough enhancer (make sure it is gluten-free), egg replacer (even if you can use eggs, the replacer makes a great leavener w/out extra liquid and I use... -
For a while, I have been telling my dh's family that we want to have Thanksgiving at our house so that we know our 3 celiac kids (and myself) would be safe. Well, my SIL is pregnant and due the day after christmas. Her dh is insisting that they stay close to home in case she goes into labor. She was OVERDUE with their first child! We only live 1.5 hrs away...

I am so tired of being broke! My dh works hard in public service, and he doesn't get paid enough. The state of Tx doesn't care about it's employees. I can't leave my kids with strangers, so I stay home. I am currently working towards a medical transcriptionion degree, but my joints have been hurting so much that it hurts to type for long periods (but that...

ARCHIVED Frustrated - What Can I Expect From Here? (very Long, Sorry)
ptkds replied to Cath4k's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow! I really feel for your dd! From what I can see, she definetly has alot of symptoms of PCOS, plus Celiac. It can take time for the body to "detox" from gluten. And if she has DH, then the skin can get worse before it gets better. Make sure she avoide iodine (including iodized salt), at least in moderation. I do all my baking with non-iodized salt ... -
ARCHIVED Dr. Just Called. Said Kara Is A Raging Celiac.
ptkds replied to Kara'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
For pizza, I make the Seasoned Pizza Crust from Bette Hagamans book. It is really yummy. But if you can buy it, try the kinnikinnick pizza crust. It is amazing! My family HATED the Amy's crust. But alot of people on here like it. For choc chip cookies, we love the Pamelas Mini choc chip cookies. We get them at Krogers around here. You can also get them... -
ARCHIVED Is It True That Dora The Explorer Cereal Is gluten-free?
ptkds replied to Kara'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Don't worry about asking questions! That's what this forum is for!! Yes, Dora stars are gluten-free. We eat it all the time. Also, Trix, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, and Little Einsteins are gluten-free. Just make sure you read the label often since they sometimes change the ingredients. The most annoying ingredient you may see in lots of "corn based... -
I just make sure I have safe alternates available to me all the time. If I get a craving for something, I try to find a substitute. 2 of the hardest things I have had to give up that are hard to replace is choc. chip cookie dough ice cream (and other flavors), and oreo cookies. I can make my own oreo cookies (there is a wonderful recipe on recipezaar.com...

ARCHIVED Can A Child Have Dh Without Having Celiac Disease? Help Again!
ptkds replied to a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Nightshades are a certain type of food. Tomatoes, white potatoes, red and green bell peppers, the "hot" peppers such as chili and paprika, as well as eggplant belong to the Nightshade Family. Lactose free and dairy free are 2 different things. Casein is a protein found in all forms of milk, including lactose-free milk. Casein can cause reactions in lots... -
ARCHIVED Can A Child Have Dh Without Having Celiac Disease? Help Again!
ptkds replied to a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
First of all, there really is no cream that will help. DO NOT bathe her in oatmeal bath stuff. That will make it worse. My dd's allergist (who suspected my dd had dh on her legs) told me to bathe her with Dove soap, and put a mild lotion on her after her bath. If it confirmed DH, your dr can give her some medicine that is an antibiotic called Dapsone. There...
