ARCHIVED When Is Diarrhea Just Diarrhea?
ptkds replied to RainyZ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Cat food can definetly be the reason. It is usually full of gluten. With my dd's, we usually decide it's gluten causing the diarrhea if they have at least 2-3 full, stinky diapers. The smell is usually worse after a glutening. One of my dd's gets a bloated tummy, too. If it is just 1 diaper, I don't blame gluten. We have to keep our pet food in our... -
ARCHIVED Please, I Need Your Advice
ptkds replied to Puddy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The above post is good advice, but it can be really expensive. If that is not an option, I would go ahead and get them tested. From what I have read in another recent post, if a person is turned down for insurance because of Celiac, they can appeal and usually win. They can get a doctor's not stating that Celiac is not a problem as long as the diet is... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Day Care In Salt Lake City?
ptkds replied to ladywilk's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am so sorry for your loss. Have you though about finding another mom who can take care of your dd at her home? Maybe you can meet someone through a local gluten-free support group. Or meet someone through church or in your neighborhood. Good luck. -
ARCHIVED Dd Has 2 Bleeding Disorders . . Need Prayers
ptkds posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just got a call from my dd's hematologist. We have have been taking her to one because she has lots of bruises, bleeding gums, and a few small nose bleeds. After 3 rounds of tests, we finally have a possible diagnosis. 1. a Factor VII deficiency, possibly caused by a Vitamin K deficiency due to her Celiac disease. She took oral Vit. K for 2-3 weeks... -
I am wearing a holter heart monitor to check out why my heart rate is going up. I have 5 sticky pads on my chest. In the last 1/2 hr or so, they have started itching like crazy! What can I do?? Would it be safe to take benadryl while doing this test?? I don't want to take something that would alter the results. And of course the Cardiologist's office has...

ARCHIVED Ok What Do You Guys Think?
ptkds replied to mcs1984's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can beg to move up the endoscope. Tell them he is in pain and you really can't stand to see him in so much pain. If that doesn't work, just give him lots of love and cuddles and remember that it will be over soon. If your house is not gluten-free, you can use this time to convert over (if your entire house is going gluten-free.) It took us about a week... -
ARCHIVED How Clean Did/do You Make Your Kids Keep Their Room?
ptkds replied to TrillumHunter's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Kids . . . clean their room? Does that even go together??? My 10 yr old dd has just started cleaning her room, but only on rare occasions. My 7 yr old won't touch her room, but amazingly, she will clean thier bathroom until it shines! I think it is because she gets to clean the tub and play in the water. If you find a way to make your dd clean her... -
You can most definetly grind your own rice flours. Nothing is changed. I don't know if a coffee grinder can get it fine enough, but you can see how it turns out. Just remember that if it is not fine enough, you may have to add a little extra water so the food won't be grainy.

ARCHIVED Dd Doesn't Have An Absorption Problem,
ptkds posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I posted about 3 wks ago about my dd that possibly had a vitamin K deficiency. Her blood isn't clotting fast enough. she has bruises all over her legs (and recenlty they are showing up on her arms) and her gums sometimes bleed. The hematologist is ordering another very special blood test to check out her platelets. We have to drive nearly 2 hrs away for... -
ARCHIVED Natural Rememdy For Dh In The Mouth
ptkds replied to Alternative mama's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Avoid iodized salt. It always gives me canker sores in my mouth if I eat too much. Other than that, I don't know! -
ARCHIVED Celiacs In Families
ptkds replied to monkeypuss's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have 4 dd's. 3 of them have Celiac. I think the scientists say it is a 10% chance, but I think (along w/ many others) that the number is actually higher. My mom has it, too. We think my grandpa (her dad) had it, but he has already passed away, so we can't test him. -
ARCHIVED Do Celiacs Have A Weaker Immune System?
ptkds replied to ptkds's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My dd's and I have been gluten-free for 1.5 yrs, with the occasional accidental glutening. But a few months ago, I got the flu for the first time in my life. I'm serious, I have NEVER had the flu. But I got it and it took ALOT out of me. My dh got it, but it barely touched him. Same with my dd's. It seems like I get sick alot more now than before going gluten... -
I was wondering if Celiacs have a weakened immune system. The reason I ask is because myself and my dd's seem to constantly get sick. And now my dd possible has chicken pox, even though she has had the vaccine. She constantly has a runny nose, either from allergies or a cold of some sort. I always seem to get the stuff going around, and it always seems...

ARCHIVED My Tiny Granddaughter Zoey Could Use Your Prayers
ptkds replied to Ursa Major's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Poor little thing! I can't imagine dealing with that with one of my little ones. They would be miserable. I will definetly keep her in my thoughts and prayers. -
ARCHIVED Dd Still Not Absorbing Nutrients?
ptkds posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My dd (almost 3) has been having some problems lately with lots of bruising and bleeding gums. One of her blood tests came back abnormal (her PT time was longer than it should have been). So we met with a hematologist today. She is running more tests, but when I asked her what it could be, she said it might be from malabsorption due to her Celiac disease... -
I was once talking to some ladies at my churgh. We had just had a potluck a few days before, and i had made a cake. There were leftovers, so I had brought it home and ate the rest of it over the next few days. It got some crumbs on it from a regular cake that I didn't realize were there until it was too late. I was telling the ladies about it and that I got...

ARCHIVED Xanthan Gum, Enighten Me Please
ptkds replied to Breila's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Xanthan gum is what replaces the gluten. It makes your food stick together and keep shape. If you make bread or nearly any other baked goods, you will need xanthan gum. It can be expensive, but you only use a little bit per recipe. I order mine online at a place that is cheaper than anywhere else I have found it. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Order At Restaurants?
ptkds replied to FlyGirl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
We usually opt for the unmarinated grilled chicken breasts. Chilies will do this for you upon request. Or a baked potato. Maybe you can carry some dairy free spread or something. -
ARCHIVED Rice Chex Cereal!
ptkds replied to kim26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just be patient. The stores have to get rid of the old kind first. I bought mine at Walmart. It will be carried at all stores because that is all they are making know. It states gluten-free right on the front of the box. -

ARCHIVED Websites For gluten-free Products
ptkds replied to debmidge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link This site has the cheapest Xanthan Gum. They also have a few other great items! I also buy my cheese powder for Mac and Cheese there. I also buy my sweet dairy whey that I use for bread. -
I have been going to a new dr, who is an osteopath. Last week he ordered a bunch of blood work because I have been having a lot of pain in my hands and my heart rate is elevated. I got the results today. Everything was within normal range, except: Liver: Alkaline Phos. 120 (normal 30-115) SGPT (ALT) 69 (normal 0-29) Sed Rate 47 (normal 0-2...

ARCHIVED What If My Doctor Said We Had Celiac With Only This Info...
ptkds replied to katifer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If I remember right, your dd got the DHQ1 gene from someone. If you only carry the DHQ2 gene, she probably got it from her dad. I am not 100% sure about that, but others on here know more about it than me. As for not being sure about keeping your son on the diet, just remind yourself of how horrible he felt before going gluten-free. You can also challenge...
