  1. It really is very sad. Being focused on these issues here in Hawaii, where it really is a much smaller world, gives me a similar sense of forlorn about the rest of the country. If we cant understand it where every one knows each other in a tiny place like south kona, how can the rest of the country. We are asked to use gmo seeds all the time for tests...
  2. This really is a major issue and deserves everyones attention. All consumers have a right to know but it is extremely important for those with any food allergies to know. This is a highly controversial emotional issue especially here in Hawaii where so much of the GMO research is being conducted. Its good to be informed..
  3. Sure hope we can find an answer! It took 6 months from getting sick to being diagnosed and I lost 60 lbs in that time. That was five years and it was great to learn that I could eat gluten-free -- only I gained about 100 pounds -- Even this week -- nightly salad and thats it -- still gaining weight. they are trying to figure it out sine I have some parathyroid...
  4. There are a lot of variables for each of us and on top it it we're all different. That analogy works for me but others my get squimish at it. I dont want anything with flour in my house. cross contamination is a very serious issue for many of us while for others its not an issue at all. ken
  5. I used it often but the stores are out of it I get El tapatio and have no problems with either. NOW you got to post the soup recipe!
  6. I lived there for 5 months but that was 20 years ago and prior to celiac. I can't imagine having problems if you stay away from the breads, breading and cross contamination. A good tapas place should offer a lot of choices. Have a great trip!
  7. Buttermilk in Hawaii has wheat in it. So do the walnuts in McDonalds salads. Seems to be unless you grow it or catch it yourself you won't know whats in it!
  8. We tend to have our own pots too. She has her own toaster oven which I dont even go near and uses that rather than putting gluten items in the microwave. Learned that the hard way and the old microwave is now at her school. YOu wont see discoloration from gluten but even on the molecular level, gluten proteins can make us sick. I just dont want to...
  9. Hi afriad there is no easy answer and a lot depends on how sensitive you are. i've been gluten-free since 05 and my wife has been good about helping me and keeps the few things she likes in her room and away from the kitchen area. she no longer can mix anythign with regular flour in the house. she has her own area and toaster oven -- nothing with gluten...
  10. i've been hooked on buckwheat or 30 years. Usually I get mine in Japan from the coops thae mill the soba seeds into flour. Its just amazing stuff. In a few places outside of japan you can get juwari soba noodles which is 100% BUCKWHEat but most of what is sold is either 30% or 60% and mixed with wheat. When you fins a restaurant in Japan that is only juwari...

The findings could lead to enhanced products for the blossoming Open Original...
  12. Roys and the new Merrimans should be ok as long as you let them know ahead of time your coming. Blossoming Lotus closed which was a loss for gluten-free dining there. Marriott will fix gluten-free meals too. There is place on the 2nd floor overlooking the main intersection in Kapaa which was really good. Was there a few weeks ago and after I ordered...
  13. Thanks -- i decided against trying... just not worth the pain for a moment of pleasure when I can get that from a zillion other things
  14. I may try these things since i can handle the bobs gluten free oats but have tried other things that said gluten free but had oat bran and I was very very sorry. Guess it depends on how much of chance I feel like taking -- if any. I guess have little faith in labeling and certification processes since I have to deal with things that are often market...
  15. Jestgar had some good tips about eating pickled things which are usually ok --I've not traveled in Africa but darn near everywhere else and not had much problem. Raw food diets are not for everyone and I cant follow it all the time but when traveling, i know fresh fruit and veggies are safe, so with a little vinegar, spices and olive oil or something I...
  16. Interesting that these companies can loudly proclaim gluten free then stick a ton of oat fiber in things without any qualifications on the labels. DO you know "The gluten free certfication organization" why would they certify something with oat without some sort of label explanation?
  17. Daughter brought me a bag of tortilla chips from a company named food should taste good. the bag proudly proclaims them as gluten free and certified as such by "The gluten free certfication organization" The ingredients inlude oat fiber -- I cannot handle oats without getting dh or the big D. 22. I consider myself very sensitive ( can't walk into a kitchen where flour has been used ) but have never had problems with any of Amy's products.
  23. I bought some in the Frankfurt airport and again at Heathrow a few months back. Sometimes chocolate is the only thing I can find that is gluten free. .. Even nuts sometimes have a wheat starch coating...
  24. I agree wiht Peter, as long as there is no mention of wheat and especially when there are no other unpronouncable additives, I wuold try it -- just dont tell my wife where you found it -- her two favorite flavors in the world..
  25. Can't help that much but will advise that Cassava flour can cause upset stomachs and give similar symptoms to being glutened. There are components in the root that don't agree with all people. If that's not the problem your lucky since its a wonderful product to work with. I would look for corn bread recipes or dosa recipes based on the list. Guess since...
