  1. Open Original Shared Link is a list I just received today. I think we will see more and more of this as time marches on. I also think we will see links between celiac and other dietary issues and the altered food sources that cause them. I dont see how it can all be blamed on genetics. My background is wire service journalism and while in Asia trained...
  2. As part of my job in hawaii I sometimes design and and have commercially printed stickers for growers to test market different varieties of avocados, bananas or citrus. Granted these are not on fruit where you would just eat the peel but in my 5 years of being gluten-free and testing fruits from all over the world, I've never had a problem. BUT i do cut...
  3. By all means talk to the hotel, even the executive chef or at least the chefs office. I think you'll find them most helpful. I have to deal with this all time in hawaii and all sorts of events. They will always come up with something safe and gluten Free Most hotels keep gluten-free meals in stock now. It's getting more and more common. Please let...
  4. HI David, I think you got most of the tips form everyone. No fake crab ( wheat starch in it) No kameboko, chikuwa or fishcake of any kind. no sauce on unago or anago -- this should not keep you from enjoying the eel. Just use the sansho, wasabi or shichimi spices -- or your own shoyu, One of my pet peeves is nori from most places outside of Japan that...
  5. Get your hormones checked. When I finally got diagnosed 5 years ago I had lost 60 some pounds, all my testostorne and another hormone in the parathyroid glands. To get back required much more than diet and exercise but also a fair amount of B's and other vitamins as well as hormone injections. There are a lot of variables but its good to keep an eye on...
  6. Enjoy. Although San J is for San Jurushi Company in Mie-Ken Japan, it's made in Kentucky I think. I can't even find it in Japan! take care and good luck
  7. I second that! I tried making the Phyllo a number of times but gave up.. hope we can find it someday!
  8. I like Braggs too - love that apple vinegar in salads too. She has a farm about 10 miles from here.
  9. Sorry to hear your going through this. Its not fun. I spent 58 days in a hospital in Japan about 20 years ago then 6 months in rehab in Chicago after damaging 3 discs. I have not had back problems since then in part from what I learned for stretching. opposite arm and leg etc. I still, someplace around here., have the sheets they sent me. email me...
  10. San J is the best I found. If not at safeway then any health food store should have it. Its marked wheat Free Tamari but not all tamari is wheat free so you have to read labels carefully unless you can find san J Ken
  11. Counting calories always worked well for me -- when my head was focused on it - If I had 10 calories left for the day i would cut a Hersheys kiss in half to get a taste and 8 calories on my sheet which I wrote down at each meal. ALso joined topS WHICH I should do again -- or I should start one chapter -- still remember the pledge-- TOPS Pledge I...
  12. La-breithe mhaith agat! or Co` latha breith sona dhut! Or Breithla Shona Dhuit! Why does it take the Irish so many more words in gaelic to say Happy Birthday! Have a great day!
  13. As careful as I am, as involved as I am in training chefs in Hawaii -- accidents still happen. Took a few hours to figure out why the big D got my Monday night even before I could finish dinner. My wife made a pasta salad with the gluten-free penne , a bunch of fresh avocados, artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, Pigeon peas from the garden and some...
  14. This was and is my problem after 5 years .. Before diagnoses I had dropped about 60 lbs in the 6 months before they figured out it was celiac. IN the following 6 months I put on 80 lbs! All I can say is be carful and count calories. It really does sneak up on you, Eating gluten free does not equate to eating low cal. Often with our restrictions the...
  15. Let us know where you are in Japan. Maybe I can come up with some other places. good luck!
  16. IU see some messages form time to time about cheating and I just cant imagine it. Purposely putting ourselves into a painful situation like that just doesn't compute.
  17. I dont know whats really recommended but bleach has always worked well for us. Maybe your boyfriend can make sure the surface crumbs and things are gone before you get into wiping down everything with bleach. Might be good to get a face mask too. For me, breathing crumbs and flour in the air has caused the most problems. good luck
  18. Thanks for posting this -- Been using his stuff for years but never even thought about the gluten aspect.
  19. Glad you guys posted this as i'm schedule for surgery on the 12th. I told them all I'm celiac and they said Oh yeah we know -- no problem -- something I've hear way too often at questionable restaurants. So regardless -- I think i'll bring it up just to pressure them into double checking things...
  20. There are a lot of old discussions on the forum that you can search for and find. I live in Hawaii but have had a place in Tokyo for 30 years and celiac for 5. Do not eat Lawsons onigiri! Or family mart or 7-11 99% of those fast food onigiri have ko-mugi1 starch and/or other wheat by product. IN some cases at family mart the nori is from Korea and...
  21. HI Peter, Love the emoticon punching out the microsoft icon while necking with firefox. SO on a body wash where nothing is ingested, what percentage of people react to soap, shampoo etc.? I've always considered myself extremely sensitive and cant walk by a bakery without feeling sick if there is flour in the air but have never had any trouble from...
  22. I'm lucky I can dry my own mango - Watching the boxes that come into the local Grocery from The Philippines and Indonesia will at times have starch listed as well as the fruit and sulfur. Have also seen it with nuts. These boxes are repacked by the produce people in the stores who used the same labels regardless of the source. I've given up getting...
  23. Clean it well for sure -- If I go into a kitchen with flour I usually use a face mask like with people trying to avoid the flu. Have always been sensitive to breathing the crumbs and particles while cleaning or in kitchens where they are used. I would make sure that behind the fridge & stove are really clean.. Good luck
  24. You won't believe how much better it tastes -- in Parma!
