kenlove replied to stillight's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The classic dried onions form the can are often breaded.. I've bought bags of whole walnuts in airports to snack on while flying -- only to get on board and find they are coated starch of some kind. Each location has different things to worry about. Been celiac for 5 years and I never stop learning new things here.! ken -
ARCHIVED Help Identifying Possible Gluten?
kenlove replied to stillight's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
FOr me there would be three red flags -- Cross contamination issues are always a possibility even if you have not suffered from them before. Walnuts are sometimes coated with wheat starch -- For example, NEVER eat the walnuts that come with a McDonalds salad! Dried Onion -- I hope this wasnt the ones on the can -- they are pretty dangerous for celiacs... -

Thanks Scott -- Good to have these type of things to show the doctors here. If you ever run across one that explains heart conditions of celiacs, I could use that now. Ken -
Thanks Leslie, The other thing to remember is that you can always call me if you need anything. I"m in the book and my number is usually stuck on the wall in all the chefs offices on the big posters of tropical fruit. Have not been to Browns in some time. Mauna Lani and Marriott have new executive chefs. take care

so how can I turn this off so you dont have to scroll through a page of my interests?() -
Perhaps [part of the problem is the overall cost of everything! $8. for a bottle of water was absurd. Depending on where in Milan she is, try to find the local small grocery stores and watch the sales. One of the forum members lives in Milan and was a big help to me and I hope she sees this. Daniel Thiebaut's is very good and the chef owner Daniel can make an excellent gluten-free meal but it is important to call in advance. buck wheat / kasha is kind of nutty and can have a nice texture. Its good at picking up flavors. I was once served, in Japan, a bowel of it cooked in water and cherry tree leaves. it was fantastic. Since then I tried adding some flavored jelly to the water and its good but not as good as that first time. never did microwave it though. take care

Your lucky you weren't thrown in the can -- or fined $10K. This is one of the battles I always have to fight. why they let avocados from Mexico, Chile, New Zealand and now Peru into the US but not from Hawaii is crazy. They, the feds, have a million excuses none of which can hold up to science. Its all Calif. politics. Once people try real avocados... -
