  1. Kathleen, Ain't it?!?! We just got the bum deal all the way around!
  2. Read those Doritos labels closely! The Nacho Cheesier and the Four Cheese Doritos that I have read all listed wheat flour towards the middle to the end of the ingredients label.
  3. Oh, quit showing off!(LOL!) I used Maybelline mascara ONE TIME when I was in my 20's, and now my eyelashes keep falling out. The doctor said the allergic reaction did permanent damage to my eyelash follicles. My eyelid just swells up, and the next day the lashes start falling out. I have been using ice as soon as the swelling starts, and they have grown...
  4. Other suspect ingredients are: barley, rye, malt flavorings, food starch, modified food starch, confectioners sugar, and yes, shredded cheeses. The starches are suspect only until you call the manufacturer to determine what kind of starch was used, and not all confectioners sugar and shredded cheese use wheat flour. Reading labels is an absolute must! ...
  5. Kindness, With the change in her behavior and health just by not eating wheat, you have your answer. Many times, the tests will come back negative. It means very little. Gluten Intolerance could actually be what she has, which is usually the forerunner of Celiac. Just keep her off gluten. When she is older, explain to her what you told us. Maybe the...
  6. Lisa S, gorgeous view!! Jessica, Scammon, about 15-20 miles south of Pittsburg.
  7. Southeast Kansas!
  8. Wildones, In the event that you are unconscious or unable to communicate for an extended length of time, you WILL be given a "food packet" intravenously. You will not be allowed to starve to death. If no one around you knows that you cannot have certain things, then you will get what you might not be able to have. I do not know how the IV administration...
  9. Slimfast and Ensure have gluten, and eggs cause bad reactions for many celiacs. Try a low-residue diet, as Tiffany suggested.
  10. I don't know about the link to MS, but the untreated celiac dies an early, painful death.
  11. You betcha that's enough to bother! That is all it takes to cause a reaction in me. I have had to quit eating all processed cereals because even that little bit does me in. Instead of an egg, try 1 Tbsp of ground flax mixed with 3 Tbsp of water, set aside to thicken for a minute. I use it in my pancakes, and it works just great! Also, the rice chex I...
  12. Mel, I am so glad that your doctor responded! I don't know how long it takes to get the results back, but it is good that the blood is being drawn right away! From what I understand from others, just getting the doc to do the bloodwork is half of the battle. I hope the results are definitive, so you can know one way or another about your child.
  13. It just might be worth a three hour drive for answers!
  14. I use the same dishes as my family, and have not yet had a problem with it, but I do keep my "special" food in their own canisters, on my shelf in the cabinet. I do this mainly so my kids and their friends know which snacks are mine, and which are theirs! It also stops me from accidently grabbing one of theirs, so it works both ways! My canisters are...
  15. Be prepared to have to make an appointment. Some nurses/receptionists will tell you that you have to have an appointment. If you have a real good doctor, he will call you back at the end of the day to talk to you. They rarely have time to take phone calls during the day. He might even call you tomorrow morning. Just try not to let them get you in a tizzy...
  16. No. You can go to www.enterolab.com and order the tests yourself. You have to pay for them when you order them, and they are fairly expensive. If you can get your doctor to order them, maybe your insurance will pay part of it. No guarantees, though. You can always file with your insurance yourself, I guess. I have never tried to, so I don't know how...
  17. Talk to your doctor about the changes the diet has made for you. It sounds like you went gluten-free, then started eating some again, and your body is now throwing a fit at you because it doesn't like gluten! Since your son is gluten-intolerant, he most likely inherited it from someone: you! Taking vitamins will not mask the symptoms of celiac. Being...
  18. Hey, Tweener, My mom had the same problem with scar tissue growing haywire. My son was a toddler when he had to have an itty bitty cut on his face lasered because the scar tissue grew everywhere but across. The dermatologist that did my son said it is a genetic condition, and we would have to keep an eye on all of our children and me, since it came from...
  19. Looks good! I hope he accepts the diet, since it is a scientific way of measuring something!
  20. Talk to your doctor. If your doctor will accept the results of the diet (like mine did), then have your doctor write it in your chart. The drawback to official diagnosis is insurance: if you have to change companies, then the new company cna claim pre-existing condition and not cover you. It lends validation to your diet, and gives closure to those who...
  21. There is no reason why your doctor cannot do the blood test. Insist that they be done immediately. Your daughter should not have to suffer until July. I don't know what to tell you about your MIL! I am so fortunate, my MIL is an absolute angel!
  22. I add a teaspoon of ground flax seed to my oatmeal, and use it for egg substitute in my pancakes. I have not noticed any change in the taste, so it is an easy change to adjust to.
  23. The twizzlers I looked at had wheat starch in them. If you are consuming even that little bit, it will prevent you from healing. Try eating just meat, fruit, and vegetables for 4 weeks. No processed foods, no dairy. It is very common to have celiac without a positive biopsy. I read somewhere that celiac is actually the severe damage done by undiagnosed...
  24. Have her log on to the boards. There is a section just for teens that she might really enjoy! Yes, reading labels is difficult, but there are some premade foods that are safe. I try to stay around the perimeter of the store for shopping: meats, fruits, and vegetables. I get gluten-free pasta and flours from the Gluten Free Mall online. I am glad she...
  25. I asked my doctor about abdominal pain when sneezing, and was told it is caused by the suden, forceful contraction of the muscles.
