  1. Excellent idea!! Count me in! I have been using Weight Watchers, but it just doen't meet my dietary needs. Everyone recommends whole wheat things, and just don't understand when I say I can't have them. Our breads and pastas are so much higher in calories than wheat, so it is easy for me to get fatter than I am!
  2. Diabetes, epilepsy, HIV, even penile erectile dysfunction get lots of good press. The organizations that are supposed to help and educate us need to get some public info out for the masses. The problem is, no pharmaceutical company can market a pill to correct celiac disease. Money greases the wheels, and motivates people most. Maybe some of the manufacturers...

    ARCHIVED Cbs News Report

So right, Debmidge! I don't keep it secret, I tell everyone I know. The more people that know about it, the easier it will be for all of us.
  4. An article in one of the back issues of Sott-Free was about animals having celiacs. It made me take a long hard look at my cat, Ally. She is 11 years old (human), and has always had diarhea and vomitting, and looks very scrawny. I asked the vet about it, and she said it is common for cats to lack a digestive enzyme. End of discussion. No treatments,...
  5. The worst your insurance company can do is refuse to cover it, so I would ask. You might need a request for the test from your doctor. Enterolab says they will send a receipt that can be submitted to insurance.
  6. CONGRATULATIONS CONNIE!! It is so good to know that taking proper care of ourselves can have such a positive impact!
  7. A negative biopsy could just mean that someone didn't see the damage. Perhaps the biopsy site is not one affected, or maybe the lab tech didn't think the villi was flattened enough. Go with the positive blood tes, and try being gluten-free. The diet is not as bad as others make it out to be. Just avoid processed foods. Stick to meat, fruit, and veggies...
  8. I don't think everyone is eating gluten with no problems. I think it is misdiagnosed, and they are just being treated for the wrong things. I have a friend being treated for respiratory allergies, bipolar disorder, and overweight. He has a multitude of other problems, all of which I see listed on the boards as symptoms of gluten intolerance. His mother...
  9. Sounds like he might be referring to the reason we are sick for two weeks after a gluten accident. Maybe he is considering the more immediate reaction to be anaphylactoid in nature. Either way, I am unable to breathe, have the urge to vomit, and get horrible stomach cramps within a hopur or two of eating it, and the misery lasts for more than a week. If...
  10. I buy Jolly Rancher jelly beans. They use cornstarch instead of wheat starch or modified food starch. They also have a rich flavor, which my family loves! The bag does say they are made on equipment that also processes peanuts/nuts/milk/eggs, so you have cross-contamination issues for those items.
  11. I use Tostitos Bite Size chips, leave them whole, just spread them out on a plate and put my toppings on. Microwave for a minute 15 secs, and eat with my fingers, one yummy, loaded chip at a time. The ones in the center get soggy, so I use a fork for them. Quick, easy, and tastes like pizza! I use Ragu spaghetti sauce and mozzarella for my toppings, with...
  12. I have learned that I can live quite well without bread! I use corn chips for pizza crust, even my kids love to eat that. Everyone in my house eats better, because I just fix healthier food all the way around. We eat meat and vegetables, with fruit for snacks. My kids do buy poptarts and such for themselves, but they do not have a gluten problem. I thank...
  13. Hhmmm....I think I clicked on "my assistant" at the top. If that doesn't work, try clicking on your name. At some point, your profile will come up, and you will be able to make changes. When you get on the right one, it will guide you in the avatars and everything. I am pretty sure I went through the assistant!
  14. Kayjay is right. Sticking to fruits, veggies, and meats, I saved more on junk food than I spent on real food. Now that I know for certain that I have to remain gluten-free for life, I went to the GlutenFree Mall and spent 70.00 on flours and pasta and such, but it has already lasted over 7 weeks. Just keep the flours in the fridge to keep them fresh. ...
  15. The doctor did say that the allergist might decide it's necessary to order the blood tests, so I am going to ask for them when I go in. I don't want to go on gluten and be sick, but I do want a proper diagnosis!
  16. Whenever I have an accident, my stomach gurgles so loud it can be heard over my teens' music. I can also feel whatever it was I ate as it passes each stage of my intestines. It feels like a jagged ball as it goes, and sometimes my abdomen is red and swollen where it is at. Try going gluten-free, see if it makes a difference to your body. The worst that...
  17. I asked her about them. She said they are way too expensive and too invasive. She feels that if she just proves that I have to avoid gluten for the rest of my life, that it will be sufficient. My husband agrees with her, because he knows how sick I get when I eat gluten. He thinks the gluten challenge for the testing will be too much for me. He said...
  18. A gluten allergy. She said that because my symptoms are not diarhea, a biopsy will probably not show what we are looking for. Since my sinuses swell shut and I get severe constipation after an accident, she is betting that an allergist can do a skin prick test and get a positive reading. She said it will be put in my records as as gluten intolerant if...
  19. Thanks! I found an egg substitute at the store, but it listed eggs as the first ingredient! I hope no companies do this with gluten-free labeling!
  20. I am allergic to eggs and poultry, and want to make some cookies and cakes. Before having to go gluten-free, I was eating Dolly Madison chocolate cupcakes, which have no eggs. I am wondering if anyone knows what is used in place of the eggs?

    ARCHIVED Mouth Sores

I never thought that celiac disease could cause the sores in my mouth. They are very small, at the back on the roof, and sometimes on the sides of my tongue. I have one now, but I also had a gluten accident right before getting it! I am so glad all of you are here!
  22. Let us know when it comes out, and what the title is. My favorite bookstore has already told me that they will order it for me, if they do not have it in stock.
  23. Modified food starch can be wheat, or potato, or corn. Call Lay's and ask them what kind they use.
  24. I really don't like sour cream, but I can get used to it! I am sometimes feeling pretty desperate for variety!
  25. Did any of you know that you can make your own fruit roll-ups? You need a food dehydrator, some cheesecloth, and your favorite fruit. My recipe says to mash up your fruit, removing skins and seeds, spread it on the cheesecloth about 1/4 inch thick, and put it in the dehydrator until it is a rubbery consistency. I haven't tried it yet, my dehydrator got...
