ARCHIVED How Do You Resist The Temptation?
LisaJ replied to jamrock's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think of the horrible diarrhea that would soon follow works every time - haha -
Hello all - I see this subject has been posted about a million times, but I keep finding different answers. So here's my question: So with the new labeling law, companies are required to list if a product contains wheat. And modified food starch can be wheat, corn, potato, or tapioca. So is it safe to assume that if the "modified food starch" is...

ARCHIVED Don't Understand My Test Results
LisaJ replied to Anne AMP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow - that's what I meant to say, Villanfam just said it much better than I ever could explain it! I have biopsy confirmed Celiac Disease, and only my IgA was positive, not my IgG. Don't know why, but my doc says that happens sometimes. -

Yes, you want your antibodies to eventually turn to normal range (negative) after being on a gluten free diet. -
ARCHIVED Don't Understand My Test Results
LisaJ replied to Anne AMP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
They are both antibodies, just different types. People have 5 different types of antibodies, and IgA is the most abundant one in your digestive tract. So if your anti-gliadin IgA is positive, you are having an immune response to gliadin (a protein in gluten). Did your doctor recommend a biopsy or gluten free diet?? -
ARCHIVED Don't Understand My Test Results
LisaJ replied to Anne AMP's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ok, so my husband just read my post and said it makes no sense to him- I work in a lab that does these tests, but apparently I'm not very good at explaining things - hopefully someone else can help you if my answer didn't make sense -

IgA are your main type of antibodies in your digestive tract. So if you are having a reaction in your digestive system, it makes sense that your IgA would be positive. Only my IgA was positive too, not my IgG. They also test IgG because it's common for Celiacs to be IgA deficient, which could give a false negative. Does that make sense?? -
ARCHIVED What Was Your Favorite Christmas Gift?
LisaJ replied to Lisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
nope sweetfudge, I have not been to Belize before. I planned our trip to be as accomodating to my diet as possible! At the lodge in the jungle, they serve mostly stuff they grow on the premises and catch in the river - so I'm hoping lots of fruits, veggies, and fish. It also says right on the website to let them know if you have any special dietary restrictions... -

LisaJ replied to Lisa's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My husband and I planned a trip to Belize next month - HORRAY! We are spending some time in the jungle, then flying out to an island off the coast for some beach relaxation and windsurfing . . . I can't wait! It will be nice to get out of the cold weather . . . Hope you all had a good Christmas -
ARCHIVED Tightness Of Jaw And Grinding Of Teeth
LisaJ replied to Ricado's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Ricado, Just wanted to comment on the jaw/teeth question. I have had alot of problems with grinding/clenching - I feel your pain! I have alot of wear on my teeth from it, and TMJ problems. About 6 months ago, I went to a new dentist who saw all the wear on my teeth and made me a splint to wear at night. Wow - what a lifesaver. I didn't want to... -

ARCHIVED Diarrhea Question . . . Sorry!
LisaJ replied to LisaJ's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
ah-ha! found the problem. I guess I was in denial, but I'm pretty sure it's the dairy. Went off dairy for 3 days - D totally disappeared right away. Ate a big bowl of my gluten-free cereal this morning - D came back full force about an hour later. Guess you were right Amanda D I don't remember having a problem with dairy before, but maybe it was... -
Funny that this is posted - I just made some "no boil" lasagna a couple nights ago. I got some brown rice noodles and wanted to follow the same recipe I always had before I was gluten-free - I always used the "No-Boil Classic Lasagna" recipe right on the side of the Creamette noodles box. I just cooked it at 375 degrees instead of 350, and left it in the...

ARCHIVED Diarrhea Question . . . Sorry!
LisaJ replied to LisaJ's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks again everyone. I think I am going to try eliminating dairy, then maybe soy and see if that's it. I don't remember having a problem with those before, but I am eating more of it now than I was before. I have checked everything in my house for gluten - I am definitely not new to gluten-free - I was gluten-free from age 2 to 18, until a dumb doctor... -

ARCHIVED Diarrhea Question . . . Sorry!
LisaJ posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
So I know it's a gross topic, but I'm getting a little freaked out . . . so I was diagnosed with Celiac and have been gluten free for about 6 weeks now. I feel great! I am concerned though about one thing . . . I have diarrhea every day now. I realize that it may take a long time for my body to heal, but I am concerned because I only occasionally had diarrhea... -
ARCHIVED Dr Is Not Trying... Cant Contact Him About These Lab Results.
LisaJ replied to ARK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, I am a Clinical Lab Scientist - I do this work all day. The only number that is significantly out of range is his alkaline phosphatase which is pretty common in teens - it will be elevated during growth. Everything else looks pretty normal. Lisa -

ARCHIVED Your Personal Celiac/gluten Intolerance Story
LisaJ replied to emcmaster's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Everyone! I see this started a while ago, but I am new here! I love reading everyone's stories and I love this site - makes me feel less lonely in a gluten-filled world So here's my story: I was diagnosed with Celiac when I was about 2 years old. I was a "classic" celiac case - very malnourished, skinny everywhere but huge belly, every time my... -
ARCHIVED Barry Farms Pastas?
LisaJ replied to ptkds's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat alot of corn pasta - I'm not sure about the brand, I don't have any right now - but I really like it. I always use it for spaghetti. I think it tastes better than the rice noodles - better texture. Good luck! -
Thanks guys! I found the recipe and will definitely try it. And I also found a Whole Foods store not too far away from me - I will have to get some of that pizza crust too. I never ate pizza much before I was gluten-free, but now I am really craving it!! haha - funny how that works Lisa
-
Does anyone have a good recipe for pizza crust? Possibly with some cornmeal?? I've tried a few mixes and a pre-made frozen crust that were mostly from rice flour and the texture always turns out really mushy . . . Thanks! Lisa

ARCHIVED Raection; Smart Balance Mayo & Chicken Of The Sea
LisaJ replied to mainesgem's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know about the mayo, but found this on the Chicken of the Sea website: Are Chicken of the Sea products gluten free? All Chicken of the Sea products are gluten free, with the exception of Ahi Tuna Steak in a Grilled Herb Marinade, Ahi Tuna Steak in a Teriyaki Sauce, Salmon Steak in a Mandarin Orange Glaze, Mandarin Orange Salmon Cups, Teriyaki...
