  1. Oh, most definitely dark chocolate. (Be sure to read the ingredients. Some silly companies will put dairy in a product and still call it "dark." Should be a law I like dark chocolate better anyway.) I'm a big fan of Lara Bars as well. There are other brands of fruit/nut/seed/chocolate bars out there too, which are gluten, dairy and soy free. ...

    ARCHIVED Why?!?

Oh, criminy, all I need is to learn about combination intolerances. I'm having enough problems figuring out the single ones I suppose this could explain why sometimes I react and sometimes I don't and I just can't figure it out. But yeesh, how does one figure it out? I have a food/symptom journal dating back a year and I frequently try to data mine...
  3. I tell people I have multiple allergies if they notice. Folks rarely understand what an intolerance is, but "allergy" gets their attention. They don't need the details, unless they ask. I have been known to make a joke out of it like, "Yes, I'm allergic to food, so that does limit me a bit." Sometimes folks don't notice and I just say, "No thanks."...
  4. It is certainly possible to have problems with both casein and lactose. The Lactaid would help with the latter, but not the former. I don't think that eliminating gluten makes casein or lactose intolerance worse. You just no longer have the gluten symptoms masking what the dairy is doing to you. From what I've read, frequently people can have lactose...
  5. To go off on a little tangent, I had to tell you I just tried the Green & Black 85% Dark bar for the first time. Wow. I must have been making happy noises because my son called out, "Dad, Mom is cheating on you with a chocolate bar!" I haven't tried Vosges (probably because I haven't seen it). I do like Endangered Species. Also Dagoba. The dark...
  6. Yes, we exist. There are even quite a few of us that are vegan to boot. I found I had to eliminate soy and still I'm fine. Any time a diet change is anticipated, it can seem overwhelming. But you do a little research and find out it isn't that bad. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan recipes are gluten free or can be converted. I substitute a gluten-free...
  7. Have you tried keeping a food/symptom diary? Perhaps you can find a link there. What do you have during the day usually that may cause bloating? Dairy and eggs would do it for me, but also any sugar alcohols (like sorbitol, mannitol, etc., found in sugar-free products). If you could post everything you had in a day when you experience your symptoms...

    ARCHIVED Egg Whites

I may be wrong, but I'm remembering reading that the protein is in the white. So it would make sense that an allergy would be to that part. There can be problems with eggs other than allergies, at least from my experience. I used to eat eggs at the time when I was young. Then I started having problems with things like omelets. Next pancakes and the...
  9. I'm a vegan who has to avoid gluten and soy. It really isn't that difficult, at least at home (Restaurants that do work well include tapas, middle eastern, Indian, some Mexican, & Ethiopian [if they don't put wheat flour in their injera]). There are veggies, fruits, legumes (beans, lentils, split peas, peanuts, anything but soybeans for me), nuts...
  10. I haven't been in Zagreb, but last summer I was in Vienna & Budapest (among other places). In the latter two cities, most people in restaurants speak English and seemed to have no difficulty understanding. I had some sheets listing my dietary restrictions in the different languages for every country I went to. This site has 38 different languages...
  11. I was looking just now for a site that tries to sum up everything, the strength of the evidence, and so on. This is what I found: Open Original Shared Link As you can see, there are a few other factors than the ones you list. Calcium can be lost from the bones due to excess sodium, caffeine, alcohol, phosphoric acid, and preformed vitamin A, smoking...
  12. I've seen some lists that say you need to check on artificial flavors, such as: Open Original Shared Link The list on celiac.com just puts down "flavors." But I don't know why artificial colors could hide gluten (as they say) and not artificial flavors. I avoid artificial flavors to begin with due to possible MSG, so I can't say I've run across gluten...

    ARCHIVED Corn Chips

Yeah, come to mention it, I remember that Tostidos post now. I guess I blanked it out of my memory banks because I don't want to believe it. Nuts with wheat? What will they think of next? Were these some sort of flavored nuts or something? Sounds weird. Do you think it is a valid concern with people reaching into bowls and having gluteny hands...
  14. I think I've had gluten problems my entire life, just not known about it until a year ago. Some years ago I was told I had a duodenal "irritation." This was way before anyone knew about H. pylori. I got the standard advice given to ulcer folks back then, which had no effect on what I felt. I think it was a gall bladder problem; sometimes my food just...

    ARCHIVED Corn Chips

Thanks everyone. For some reason this topic wasn't showing up in my inbox or when I searched for new posts until right now. I wasn't ignoring everyone on purpose Yes, I should know better than to put stuff in my mouth when I don't know what all it is or crumbs could be there. I'm not good at handling parties yet. (I need to get out more ) I...
  16. No need to "assume" I am a vegetarian, because my signature makes the point. I wasn't hiding anything. I said "animal protein" because that is what I meant. The category includes dairy and eggs, not just meat. If I were being "fervent," I would have said animal flesh and secretions I didn't intend to get into an argument about vegetarianism. I...
  17. I would google "cooked [name of fruit] recipe." Generally, you would cut it up, add a little water and then simmer on top of the stove, microwave, or put in a slow cooker or the oven. You might ask on the McDougall board. There is at least one person regularly on the board who has done the elimination diet and there is one new person just starting it...
  18. I must point out that what you are following is NOT the elimination diet set forth by Dr. McDougall at all. You say: "I am eating fresh fruit. cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, dried cranberries, Sliced almonds (they are allowed), avacadoes, strawberries and bananas. Thats my breakfast and/or lunch. Dinner is chicken (free range), red and orange peppers...
  19. Do you know how the lamb was prepared? Could it have been prepared with flour (used to coat the meat or to thicken a sauce) or a broth that contains gluten? I've seen stuffed grape leave recipes using bulgur, rather than rice, but I think you would have noticed that.
  20. Falafel might not be gluten-free due to cross-contamination of the oil used for frying. Also some recipes call for wheat flour. I know the mixes I've seen at the store contain wheat
  21. Sex hormones are protective of bone health, which is why problems develop after hormone levels go down. Soft bones are fairly common in our country among menopausal women. The epidemiological and laboratory studies show what they show. Cross-country statistics show a direct correlation between rates of osteoporosis and consumption of animal protein....
  22. How much protein do you consume? If you have a lot, particularly animal protein with its higher amounts of sulfur-containing amino acids, calcium comes out of your bones to neutralize it. Open Original Shared Link Also calcium leaching -- sodium, caffeine, phosphoric acid (some sodas), tobacco and, if I'm remembering right, alcohol. You've probably heard...
  23. Yes -- at least this is what I've been told by folks here. There are alternative products; no one needs to be applying gluten to their body. Edit: are you sure the products don't contain cocoa butter? I see a chocolate allergy too.
  24. Interesting. I wonder if that is because they have such a high rate of celiac? I would probably like the corn beer.
  25. I don't know how common multiple problems are. Plenty of gluten-free cookbooks and products seem to contain the stuff that a number of us can't have Of course, maybe those of us who have multiple problems end up having to talk about it all more Actually I knew about my problems with egg, dairy and fat long before I realized the gluten problem...
