ARCHIVED Am I Inhaling Gluten?
hathor replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I researched this once. Drywall doesn't have gluten in it. Products you may use when you are drywalling might. You can look at the labels and see, or contact the manufacturers. Try googling too -- I remember one site that actually listed the ingredients of assorted products like this. (Don't have it anymore). Even absent gluten, it would be a good... -
ARCHIVED Can Anyone Recommend Good Cf Subs For These Foods?
hathor replied to cruelshoes's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
If you google on Gluten-free Casein-free diet, you can find some good resources. For chocolate, stick with dark chocolate (and real the label -- some silly companies, like Hershey's, will still put some dairy in). For cheese, try soy or rice based cheeses (just read the label to make sure they don't have casein added); it also probably is good to... -
ARCHIVED Having Trouble Accepting The Diagnosis Of Celiac And Allergies To Food
hathor replied to applecore's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Since you can't have rice, have you explored other gluten-free grains? Here's a list: quinoa, millet, wild rice (not related to regular rice -- isn't even technically a grain), buckwheat, corn, sorghum, amaranth, teff. But then I'm confused. You said you were going to eat everything 3 and below and rice is a 3. So do you need to cut out rice? A good... -
ARCHIVED Elimination Diet Gone Wrong?
hathor replied to misdiagnosed6yrs's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It does seem like the chicken is a strong possibility. Do you notice a problem with added fats? Skimming back I see you reacted one time when you had some margarine and here you had some mayo. I can really suffer when I have high fat, particularly added fat. Mayo would kill me due to the fat and the egg. Is the chicken you are having with or... -
ARCHIVED Norwegian Cruise Lines
hathor replied to laurelfla's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Wow, that sounds incredible. Thanks for sharing. To what extent do you think they could accommodate someone with multiple food restrictions, like, say, me I went on a river cruise with another line last summer and they simply couldn't accommodate vegetarian, without gluten, dairy, egg or soy. I had to eat fish just to get enough calories, not that... -
ARCHIVED Queenstown, New Zealand
hathor replied to Julie-uk-nz's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Thanks. We are actually planning a visit to Australia and New Zealand. From what I hear, it will be easier to eat out than it is here in the US. Our first trip this year will be to the UK actually. (My husband is retiring in 1 1/2 months; hence the idea of multiple trips -- I don't know if we'll keep this up or not). -
ARCHIVED Should I Only Eat Products Labeled gluten-free?
hathor replied to LoriG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Things that are naturally gluten-free cannot (yet) be labeled that way in the US. So you unnecessarily restrict yourself if you want a gluten-free label first. I find that I can figure out the gluten-free status (or reputation for possible CC) most of the time by googling on the name of the product plus the word "gluten." I've only had to contact manufacturers... -
ARCHIVED Nature Made Vitamins & Products

Why not just contact the manufacturer, if no one happens to know on this forum? -
ARCHIVED Red Marking On Face
hathor replied to Nic's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In addition to foods (soy is another thing that can frequently cause skin problems), it is possible to react to personal care products. Try hypoallergenic products and see if that makes a difference. My daughter (now 21) developed very sensitive skin when she was little and very few products don't make her skin red & blotchy to this day. Fluoride... -
ARCHIVED Restaurants That Have Gluten Free Food In Myrtle Beach Sc
hathor replied to suepooh4's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
My Triumph dining guide only mentions the chain places. In addition to Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill, and Cheeseburger in Paradise, they list: Carabba's Italian Grill, Uno Chicago Grill. -
ARCHIVED What Do You Do When You Realize You Are Eating Something Bad?
hathor replied to colorado's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This has only happened to me one time. Usually I figure out the cross-contamination (or my failure to be paranoid enough) after the fact. But one time Maggiano's brought me the regular pasta, rather than the gluten-free stuff I had ordered. I was too busy drinking wine and people watching to notice until I had eaten a substantial amount. On the way... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Get A Diagnosis
hathor replied to panthercreek's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Nobody has all the symptoms. What used to be viewed as classic celiac is only seen in a minority of patients, as I understand it. If your symptoms vary according to what you eat, it seems to me that you have a food-related issue. One can react to a food immediately or anytime in the next, say, 48 to 72 hours, so keeping a diet/symptom journal can be... -

Red Bull has no soy in it, but I suppose it could contain something else that bothers you. Or have you had it before without problems? -
We do try to order what we can from any restaurant. I don't see how they would benefit more if a person just sat there with little or nothing to eat (eating either before or afterwards) or didn't come at all. I also don't see why it would be a health code violation, either. Since no one has ever commented on my family's assorted "eating food from the...

My Triumph dining book mentions the following restaurants. I can't vouch for them personally. I've leave off the PFChang's. I'm irked at them for my own reasons. Anyway, the list: Andre's Buca Di Beppo Claim Jupper Corvette Diner Fleming's Steakhouse Mimi's Cafe Napa Valley Grille Outback Steakhouse Roy's Ruth's Chris Steakhouse Uno Chicago...

So many people say they can't give up cheese. I think it could be because of the high casein content. It, like gluten, plugs into the opioid receptor cells in the brain or something like this. People can actually go into withdrawal. But you give it up and you lose your taste for it. I used to love cheese. Now I pass by a cheese counter and I have...

ARCHIVED I Cant Believe Im Saying This But....
hathor replied to Glutenfreefamily's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have heard several people notice that they felt glutened and the only thing they can think of is being in places where there may be flour in the air. So it is not impossible. Is it possible that some product you bought was cross-contaminated? Those "made on the same equipment" type warnings are strictly voluntary. Anything new you've tried, either... -
I agree with you completely. My husband has no food intolerances, but he is vegan as I am. Every so often his firm has a shareholder meeting at the big power restaurant in DC. Will they allow my husband to order, say, a plain baked potato (without the sour cream) and the broccoli (without the cheese sauce). No, they REFUSE to serve the dishes that way...

ARCHIVED Travelling Vegetarian Celiac
hathor replied to ElseB's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I take what food I can fit in my bag (nuts, Lara bars, dried fruit, crackers) and order a vegan meal. The rest of my family orders vegan meals too. Then I eat what seems to be safe and I trade with them what isn't. Not a perfect solution, but it is my best stab at getting at least a little something I can eat out of the airline. Sometimes this means... -
ARCHIVED Questioning Gluten Intolerance
hathor replied to Echo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You can't tell by the number. Apparently, positive is positive. Someone with a higher score doesn't have a bigger problem. (I think you can compare your own results over time, though, to see if they are improving.) I do wonder if they have a margin of error on the tests, though. I asked this once and never got a response. I have one 11 result and... -
ARCHIVED India Tree Decorating Sugars
hathor replied to sansglutengrl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If these are the products you are referring to, according to Allergy Grocer they are gluten-free: Open Original Shared Link Edit: I found this out by googling with the product name and the word gluten. I find this works well in finding out what information may be available on the gluten status of products. I've saved myself a lot of manufacturer contacting... -
ARCHIVED A Sorbitol Free Sublingual B-12
hathor replied to Greeneyes4950's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you sure you would react to the tiny amount of sorbitol that would be in a tiny sublingual pill? I generally react to sugar alcohols, but the sorbitol in the B12 pill I take doesn't bother me. (In case anyone wonders, it is the vegetarian formula one from Twin Labs.) I am interested in this topic though. I'll look for that spray next time I'm in... -
My suggestion is to cut out dairy (and anything with casein or caseinate added to it). This can cause both bloating and constipation. It could be that your body reacts one way to gluten and another to casein. Take away the gluten and the casein reaction can take over. Or you could be lactose intolerant, too. How long have you been gluten-free, by the...

ARCHIVED Rice Dream And Caramel Color
hathor replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, I love hemp milk (the Living Harvest brand; I find Hemp Bliss nasty -- people's tastes can vary, I just mention it because, in case you try one and don't like it, well, the other one is different). Does your son react to soy lecithin? Enterolab told me I could probably tolerate it. It is pure fat, so it doesn't contain the protein. If you look...
