  1. Wow. You can always visit a second allergist down the road for additional testing if you're really not convinced. Unlike gluten, peanut IGE antibodies should hang around for quite a long time even after you remove peanuts from your diet...one of the reasons PA is hard to outgrow. Good luck with the new dietary steps...I know PA can be very restrictive...
  2. Oh, that's awful. I hope in one sense it might be good - if you've found a cause, maybe you can get better. What types of symptoms have you been having? Is there a thread I should read? Ugh, ugh, ugh. You'll probably have nightmares. Hopefully not.
  3. I have had a PIPIDA scan with CCK (same test as HIDA, different radioactive substance), a abdominal/chest/spinal CT scan and abdominal ultrasound. I had a gastro surgeon re-read the CT, and he gave the opinion that he sees no evidence for removing the gallbladder at this time. I am going to try a low-fat diet for a while, and then challenge with fat. Hopefully...
  4. It's not necessary to carry an Epi unless there is an IGE type allergy to wheat or other foods. Some other people with allergies to insect stings or cold urticaria, etc., also carry them. People with IGE allergies tend to have symptoms like hives and perhaps a history of eczema or asthma. Some Celiacs do have both conditions - Celiac and a true food...
  5. Yikes. Sorry. Yes, I'd expect a nurse to be familiar...or get familiar really quickly. (Our kids seem to have some similar issues...my oldest has Celiac, EGE, and allergies to peanut, pork, soy, and oranges.)
  6. Thanks for the extra encouragement to consider gallbladder. I did see a surgeon for a second opinion about a month ago, and he did not feel like I was a good candidate for surgery...thought it was not likely to be gallbladder. Things have changed a bit in a month, though, so perhaps my new symptoms will make it clearer. I have been running a low-grade...
  7. David - thanks a million for the helpful diagram and article! I have looked for a diagram like that for a long time. The front and back "liver/gallbladder" spots are just right for what's going on with me. Also, the "stomach" spot in the center of the back corresponds exactly to a delayed reaction I have any time I eat corn. So even though I avoid...
  8. Thanks, both of you. It is definitely right-sided. More localized to the back side than the front, but I occasionally feel it come through to the front, near the center. Trent, I've had a PIPIDA scan with CCK (similar to HIDA scan), and ultrasound. They said I have normal ejection fraction. I do notice slightly increased pain after larger meals....
  9. I have watched as my son progressed from RAST class 2 to class 6. His peanut specific IGE is >100 kU/DL. IGE antibodies takes a long time to go away (years), they say. Only 20% of people with peanut allergy ever outgrow it. It took a jump from class 3 to class 6 after he had his first anaphylactic reaction in preschool. The way his allergist...
  10. Amyleigh, I have had gluten symptoms with Lays and some other Frito-Lay products as well. I can't do Stax for other reasons (I have some other intolerance...but I can't figure out what it is). Have you found a brand of potato chips besides Stax that you trust? I'm always on the lookout...
  11. If she also suffers from a lump in her throat or feelings of food being stuck in her esophagus at times, ask them to test her for eosinophilic esophagitis and eosinophilic gastroenteritis. These used to be considered uncommon diseases, but now they are diagnosed more frequently. My son has both Celiac and eosinophilic gastroenteritis. You can find out...
  12. We have a whole family of Celiacs - DH (husband) and i both have it, and so do at least two of our three kids. With my 7-year-old son, he seems to get a sensation of fulllness while he's eating that is a warning signal. Then he gets a stomach aches a few hours later or that night. "D" can follow any time in the next 48 hours. Prior to going gluten free...
  13. For a couple of months, I have been having right-sided pain at night. It seems a little north of where I think my right kidney would be. It radiates through to the front (upper right quadrant) at times, but is mostly felt in back. Nausea is present, but more like a dull nausea from pain than waves of nausea like you're actually going to throw up. At night...
  14. Hi, I'm very familiar with peanut allergy, as my son has had this allergy for 6 years & now has anaphylactic reactions to peanut. It looks like you had a RAST test for peanut, which is a blood test that would measure your peanut-specific levels of immunoglobulin E, or IGE. On paper, it looks like you have a RAST Class 2 peanut allergy (there are six...
  15. So sorry for your daughter's continued problems. You could try a food diary...personally I find these difficult to keep, but instructive. Some Celiacs have other food intolerances...soy, corn and dairy are big culprits. I have my gluten-free kids on a set weekly diet - it starts over after 7 days. That way, if there is a day they're consistently...
  16. One more thing... When I was new to Celiac, other people kept posting about brands of foods that I did not recognize. At first I thought it was just regional differences. Then I finally made the connection that they were brands available in health food markets. If you haven't done so yet, check out the health food stores and chains in your area. Chance...
  17. Hi Carmen, welcome!! Big hugs on the new diagnosis for your daughter. It's a lot to take in...glad you're here doing some reading. My cousin is a type 1 diabetic who learned that he also has Celiac. He's in his early 20s. In his case, a year later, he says the gluten-free diet has been a huge help for him, especially with controlling his sugars. There...
  18. I wanted to add...if you have metabolic syndrome or problems with your sugars, you might find that the gluten-free diet helps you with some of that (especially if gluten is the root problem). My cousin is a Type 1 diabetic who discovered later in life that he is also Celiac. He said going on the gluten-free diet helped him get much better control of his...
  19. Hi there. Not all Celiacs make every antibody. The only Celiac-related antibody I ever test positive for is antigliadin-IGA, and I definitely have Celiac Disease (history of dramatic unintended weight loss, dermatitis herpetiformis, mouth sores, miscarriages, etc.). My 7-year-old son makes all the antibodies. Not sure if this helps or not. Good luck...
  20. A few food ideas...my little ones like Kinnikinnick animal cookies, Rice Chex cereal, Dora the Explorer Cereal, fresh fruit, applesauce, meats, Kinnikinnick pizza crusts (which can be microwaved for an easy meal), Hormel "Natural Choice" lunch meats (which are labeled gluten free). Tinkyada gluten free pasta is good. I add olive oil to gluten free toast...
  21. Welcome, Wayne. I can't say for sure if it's Celiac, but since the gluten-free diet is just as healthy as a regular diet, I think it would be in your interest to try it for a few months. Have you tried shopping at a large health food store yet for a better selection of gluten-free foods? In the better stores, they will have an aisle or two and a freezer...
  22. Also - are you planning to do the blood tests for Celiac? If so, you should do them while ON gluten. The values start to fall as soon as gluten is removed.
  23. Hi there. I was diagnosed as an adult. I had been losing weight at a rate of about 5-10 lbs. per month for three or four months at the time I was diagnosed. After going gluten-free, I still had "D" and lost another 5 lbs. over the next two months. The weight loss definitely slowed, but did not stop until 6-8 weeks later. Then I started slowly putting...
  24. I have not seen Dr. Kane, so I can't tell you, but most of the docs at the Mercy clinics are good. In the GI clinic, my kids have seen Dr. San Pablo and Dr. Friesen. We like Friesen because he also has a special interest in kids with food allergies and eosinophilic disorders in addition to the regular GI stuff. My oldest son has multiple food allergies...
  25. I hope you're going to see Dr. Craig Friesen at Mercy - I think he's great.
