  1. With that many food allergies (I assume these are IGE type food allergies diagnosed either by RAST blood test or skin prick test) - I would find a pediatric GI familiar with eosinophilic disorders. They are a type of GI disorder that can occur in kids with allergies. Besides Celiac, my oldest son has food allergies and eosinophilic gastroenteritis &...
  2. Poor little guy! Hope he's better now. It's sooo hard to get people to understand the strictness of the gluten-free diet. I used to get so frustrated with family members... Anna, here's a little tip I have discovered for working with grandmas (both of them). Grandmas like to give grandkids treats, something they're not already given at home...something...
  3. I forgot to say, GOOD LUCK!!! I think in a highly symptomatic child, they might be willing to do an endoscopy with biopsies. They can look for other things besides Celiac. Are you getting IGE allergy testing, as well? Sometimes this is called RAST testing. She could have wheat allergy, which is due to a different type of antibody than Celiac...
  4. Prepare yourself for possible negative tests and unanswered questions. There are studies that say the antibodies don't always show up until kids are 3 - 5 years old. I have three gluten intolerant kids (what happens when two undiagnosed Celiacs unknowingly marry.) We tested our three boys when they were 6 years, 3 years and 9 months. My 6 year old...
  5. Oh - wanted to add that my youngest son (also a Drew) was 9 months old and had a ton of eczema at the time I was diagnosed. Sometimes it would weep and bleed. His skin rashes DID clear up on the gluten free diet. It didn't happen overnight. A week was long enough to see a difference. At a month, it was mostly healed but had a slight redness to the areas...
  6. I understand. Sometimes you seek the formal diagnosis for other people who will be caring for your child. You have to be an "evangelist" in this way. Do you think your ex would be somewhat swayed by a genetic test that shows that your son has the genes that predispose to Celiac Disease? Your doc could order if (if he/she knows the name of a lab that...
  7. I have three boys who are gluten-free, ages 7, 4 and 2. Two are still dairy free. I find that it's easy to run out of ideas. I was never a big planner before, and there were always plenty of convenient options. Now it requires more thought. It's VERY helpful to sit down every once in a while when nobody's hungry and make a list of what your DS does...
  8. Congrats!
  9. BTW, I have had some trouble (slight) with Kraft shredded cheese. Since they don't have any wheat labeled, I have assumed this was because of corn (I have symptoms with both). Maybe not...
  10. That's great - I hope they keep going down. I have had my own experiences with elevated AGA-IGA after a year gluten free...made me want to send everything in my house off to a lab to be tested for gluten, lol. Thanks for posting your experiences and what you changed.
  11. My son's GI said that green doesn't necessarily mean bad, but that it can mean a rapid transit time through the GI system - something about the bile not being fully removed in the colon. Not sure if that helps. Here are some other reasons I found elsewhere (not sure about accuracy): Here are the most common causes of green stools: - large amounts...
  12. Hi Helen - sorry you're going through such a confusing time in the search to find answers for your son. My oldest son has multiple coexisting conditions - Celiac Disease, IGE food allergies (to peanut, soy, pork, oranges, plus elevated total IGE which means he can develop new allergies), plus a GI condition called eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Eosinophilic...
  13. For chocolate frosting, you can try Spectrum shortening (palm oil)...or Marshmallow Fluff (if egg and corn syrup are okay...I know they don't use peanuts in their facility, because I have called). There is a type of cake frosting that is just beat egg whites, vanilla and sugar. Another "icing" I have used is Jello instant pudding mix mixed with...
  14. My oldest's diet is completely free of gluten, peanut, soy, pork and oranges...other foods (including dairy) are only used two days per week on rotation. He has Celiac and eosinophilic gastroenteritis, plus food allergies and a high total IgE (high propensity to develop new allergies). We rotate his non-allergic foods to try to avoid developing new IgE allergies...
  15. I thought of another couple of snack ideas... applesauce in single serve containers (we like Musselman's) and pretty much any Lundberg rice cake type product...Lundberg phased out peanut ingredients a while back, and even their honey nut flavor does not contain real nuts. I know you're looking for starch...but I wanted to mention that my 7--year-old...
  16. Anna, I don't know if I have narcolepsy or not, but I have major "sleep attacks" when I get glutened. From childhood on, i have some mild to moderate differences in the way I handle sleep that have led me to question whether I have a form of narcolepsy. I used to experience sleep paralysis during twilight sleep...basically would be awake, about to fall...
  17. Rice Guy's pudding suggestion reminds me...Kozy Shack pudding is a hit at our house. They have great labeling (packaging even says "gluten free"), and they don't make any peanut-containing products. They make several varieties of individually sized puddings...of course my kids like the chocolate the best. My oldest son also likes the flan (contains egg...
  18. I would think so. But some Celiacs do not tolerate even gluten-free oats. Initially, I took my youngest completely grain free -- no corn or rice even - and that was at least 6 months. I was just paying attention to symptoms. Corn was causing him some problems, and he had started rejecting rice cereal after he vomited oatmeal cereal (a quick call to...
  19. About your spices question, you could investigate whether there is a food buying cooperative in your area. It's when a group of buyers get together and buy directly from a group of food manufacturers rather than using a store as a middle man. Some in the states and Canada are very well organized. I can "shop" online and place an order for bulk items and...
  20. I have been mildly glutened by what I suspected was garlic powder before. I was never sure. But I did switch brands. I currently use "Simply Organic" brand garlic powder...no issues with it. Is your child dairy free as well? If not, keep in mind that any time she is glutened (i.e. the incident with the bread), then her villi will get damaged on the...
  21. I hate my corn intolerance. Sometimes I eat corn and it doesn't seem to bother me...other times I do and get full out Celiac-imitating symptoms. I know it's crazy, but I am starting to wonder with all the genetic modification they do to corn (it's one of the most modified foods), if they haven't introduced some strains that bother me, while others don't...
  22. Ask for the gene test - or get it through Enterolab. It's a valid question for siblings of Celiacs - that way, if they don't have the HLA-DQ2 or DQ8, you can stop worrying about it. If they do have it, you consider removing gluten before there are symptoms...or at least test yearly. I and my three sons were all symptomatic. I had some of the antibodies...
  23. My DS#1 has Celiac and peanut allergy (anaphylactic)...also allergic to soy, pork and oranges. The only allergen we worry about contact with is peanut. Hmmm...starchy foods... I second this list: "Gluten free breadsticks, potato chips, Fritos, popcorn, Rice Chex, Enjoy Life cookies." I consider those to be good choices, too. We have used Glutino breadsticks...
  24. My youngest was nursing and was 8 or 9 months when I took him gluten free. He also vomited oatmeal, starting about the second time I gave it to him at 6 months. I initially thought it was oat allergy, because IgE-type food allergies were (then) the only thing we knew about in our family. However, he was negative on a skin-prick test and RAST, the most...
  25. Also...the appearance of DH can vary a bit from person to person, child to adult. My own DH rash is the typical elbow rash...but my infant's rash was on his outer cheekbones, above his tailbone, etc. He did get also a few spots in the center of his chest, too. There is something about DH and pressure points--and if you think about it, an infant's pressure...
