  1. I don't know if this is an individual thing, but I'm happy to share my experiences. I'm still paying attention to my own symptoms to try to nail down a timeline. From my recollections, it goes something like this. My DH rash is not severe (elbows only, red itchy spots only - hasn't bubbled up much from mild glutenings), but it seems like it shows up...
  2. Hi! First of all, unless it's specifically M&Ms you crave, go get yourself some Enjoy Life chocolate chips to munch on! Enjoy Life chips are made without milk or soy, so they're a nice option for those on a restricted diet. I think you can either order them online or find a distributer through the Enjoy Life Foods website. I don't recommend all their...
  3. Hi all, I'm posting this under other food intolerances because it's not a problem limited to gluten. Tonight I tried corn after having it out of my diet for a long time. Within an hour after eating some plain corn taco shells (no other new foods), I developed a dull middle to mid-lower ache in my back. This pain did not feel like a muscle ache - instead...
  4. Hi Lisa, I hate strict elimination diets and food diaries, but will do them if I'm at my wit's end. HOWEVER, I recently had an idea about how to achieve some of the same detective benefits with a little less work. It requires an upfront investment of a couple of hours, plus shopping. Here's how it goes. You sit down and make yourself a weekly menu....
  5. People have different sensitivity levels. I know for myself, 99.9% gluten-free was fine at first, but I became more sensitive over time. I guess it was kind of a detox effect. At first, it was enough to cut the obvious gluten out - I got relief from some symptoms within a few days (brain fog, extreme fatigue). Skin and GI symptoms took a slower, more...
  6. Hi, April again. Two things to consider....Did you know at least one major brand of rice milk (Rice Dream) is processed using a barley protein? Most Celiacs do not consider it safe. I personally have not tested it to find out if I react. If that's your brand, I would switch. Re. Frito-Lay products. I personally have had smallish reactions (headaches...
  7. The poor little guy! I'm glad he's starting to do better. It sounds like you are doing the right things, Sherill. You're nursing? If so, you'll need to be really attentive to what you eat, as hidden gluten is everywhere. I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't have my own symptoms to guide me. If you are not gluten intolerant yourself, you'll want...
  8. Hi Sarah - I have three kids, some with food allergies (peanut and rice allergies) and all with gluten and casein problems. I breastfed all three, and am currently starting to wean my youngest. We went from bleeding eczema and bum burns to clear skin, smiles and a chubby baby, but it took a long time to get there. It turns out he is sensitivive to all...
  9. Your son's results are very similar to what my blood tests were - solidly positive AGA - IgA, negative IgG. I haven't seen a lot of other people with only the positive IgA. I have seen a lot with the positive IgG only - and IgG is the one that some sites say can be associated with other diseases like Chron's. I would love to see a link to info about positive...
  10. My youngest son Drew seems to be intolerant of all grains - since I am still nursing him, we do not eat any grains. His facial eczema is very sensitive to corn as well as the gliadin/gluten grains, and he seems to have a true allergy (hives) to rice. Also, my dad (who seems to be Celiac - won't eat gluten) has a younger brother who will not eat any grains...
  11. My "survival" meals at first were: * Once a week: Pot roast with root vegetables; plenty of leftovers for the rest of the week This is super easy - Mine has just five ingredients, takes minimal prep, always turns out great, and makes the house smell good. If you don't have one, buy a big crock pot / slow cooker. Shop for: washed carrots (you'll...
  12. I love peanut butter, but I have a caution. I will word it strongly (warning, even graphically) but hopefully with some common-sense guidelines. I do not think everyone needs to avoid peanuts. If you and your husband (the child's father) do not have any relatives with asthma, eczema, food allergies or drug allergies, then you're probably fine eating peanuts...
  13. Do I think gluten (and casein) intolerance can cause ADHD-like behavior? Oh yeah, definitely. I am excited for the potential behavioral change you may soon see! My six-year-old is an incredible kid but has ADD-like symptoms...but they have decreased significantly since going gluten-free/CF. Prior to this, he was evaluated over several visits...
  14. Thanks, all, for the opinions, thoughts and recommendations. The thoughts about the variable nature of x-contam reactions rings true from my experiences with potato chips. I'm going to get a new pan AND look into Cascadian Farms fries...hopefully no dairy or peanut x-contam with those! April
  15. Hi all, Yesterday, I was glutened by eating Alexia fries!!! I got a big headache within 1/2 an hour of eating, then I was overcome by sleepiness and napped for a couple of hours, then woke with back pain and GI symptoms, then developed a couple of DH bumps on one elbow (they should have come up on the other elbow, but maybe since it was just a trace...
  16. I think it's cool that KC seems to have some options for Celiacs, and Hy-Vee stores in particular seem to be very Celiac-friendly. About the Olivia's products, let me know if you ever notice any of their baked goods that are also casein/milk-free. Everything I checked had milk in it, and my middle son is very casein-intolerant. : ( Great to see a post...
  17. Are we related? My third son is 10 months old, mostly breastfed, and is having some of the same problems. He "reacts" to all grains, not just the gluten ones. Rice and corn included. Oatmeal cereal was the first one he threw up, but then he wouldn't touch rice cereal again after that. We stopped trying to feed him cereals, and I started to try to...
  18. Suzie, did you make the switch to gluten-free bath products? Articles I have read say that people with DH _ARE_ sensitive to gluten in skin products...so removing the Aveeno and reading other products carefully is a good idea. Might scrub the tub, too. Have you checked out California Baby products? They are gluten-free / nut free / milk free, etc...
  19. Re. genetic ancestry - I think that testing would make a fun gift. I'd love to see if what's known of the family history holds up under scrutiny. : ) Re. protein and fat at dinner...I try to make sure he eats some chicken, turkey or roast beef every day. When he was very little (like 18 months), he used to wake up in the morning asking for protein...
  20. Here are my three-year-old son's Enterolab results: Fecal Antigliadin IgA 132 (Normal Range <10 Units) Fecal Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA 86 Units (Normal Range <10 Units) Quantitative Microscopic Fecal Fat Score <300 Units (Normal Range <300 Units) Fecal anti-casein (cow
  21. For what it's worth, there is another condition out there that can cause GI reactions to foods in infants. It is called Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome, or FPIES. Infants can have FPIES to multiple foods, including cereal grains. "Cereals, vegetables, and poultry meats, typically regarded as of low allergenic potential, must be considered...
  22. Your post got my attention. I am going to post part of my story on the off chance it's of interest to you. It's not a direct response, but it relates to intolerance of all grains. I have discovered through elimination diets that my 10-month-old cannot have any grains, even through breastmilk (human milk transmits proteins). I am the mom of three...
  23. I have had a couple of laps for endometriosis-related pain in my 20s. I started TTC after a lap at age 26. I did not get pregnant right away, and my endo pain got worse. Part of the problem with endo is that it changes the peritoneal fluid--lots of prostaglandins (cramp-producing substances) in the fluid. Just because of the pain, I started taking the...
  24. Hi. I had a strange rash during my last pregnancy, prior to going gluten-free. It started in the late first trimester and lasted for at least a couple of months. It seemed like it had faded by the end of pregnancy. My doc was stumped, but called it PUPPPS for lack of a better diagnosis. I do get DH on my elbows (didn't know it was DH until recently)...
  25. Welcome! I have about a 6-week head start on you. Your post sounds so familiar...except more painful in some ways, because of your more severe fertility issues. I am so sorry. I wish docs knew more about this. Kudos to your pharmacist for knowing one of the signs. I am 34, had stomach pain and elbow rash as a child; had an endoscopy b/c of difficulty...
