  1. Hi there - great replies. My husband and I both have Celiac (both initially diagnosed by blood work) and have three sons who range from gluten intolerant to outright Celiac. I have been in a similar situation with my oldest Celiac son (the sickest of the family) - he was a year off gluten and dairy and most soy, with some improvement but not what I expected...
  2. Have you looked into Eosinophilic Disorders, particularly eosinophilic gastroenteritis? My oldest son and I were diagnosed with Celiac at the same time, both with positive blood work. Both of us went gluten free at the same time. I steadily healed up over 4-6 months, while he showed a great deal of behavioral improvement but his GI symptoms persisted...
  3. I have never heard the words "brain fog" and "foggy-headed" used more frequently than they are among Celiacs. But it is such a useful description of how many of us feel on gluten. Sounds like you did get glutened! Hope you feel better.
  4. I'm sorry to hear that it's considered degenerative. Has your overall condition changed in the years you have been gluten free? Once again, welcome and thanks for sharing on the board. I was 34 when diagnosed, but I am positive that I have been gluten intolerant since early childhood. I get the dermatitis herpetiformis rash (related to gluten...
  5. Oops - double post.
  6. A recommendation to get vitamin levels checked...including the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K... I have a seven-year-old son who had gross motor delays compared to kids his same age - problems descending stairs, acquiring skills jumping, hopping, skipping, etc. He could not be blindfolded (as in Pin the Tail on the Donkey) without falling over. When...
  7. Welcome! I do not have Freidreich's Ataxia, but I did have some subtle symptoms of ataxia prior to learning I had Celiac Disease and going gluten free. I still have the symptoms when I get glutened. I had balance and coordination problems. I tended to misjudge distances and run into doorways, etc. I stubbed my toes and bruised my hips/knees, etc., much...
  8. She is double DQ2 - so both you and your DH must carry the right kind of HLA (human leukocyte antigen). However, I think about 30% of the population in North America does carry at least one copy of DQ2. The fact that she is "homozygous" for DQ2 means that if she does develop Celiac, she might be at risk for having a tougher case. I agree with previous...
  9. For breads, try the frozen ones vs. the ones you find on a shelf. If you like a hearty, dense, homemade tasting bread, try Food For Life Rice Almond Bread - it will be in the freezer. My kids (Celiac, too) like Kinnikinnick white sandwich bread. All gluten free bread except homemade typically needs to be toasted to be good. If you are having a hard...
  10. GreysFan, There are a lot of us. I am 35 now. I had my first diagnostic laparoscopy for pelvic pain when I was 23. It got so bad in my 20s that I had pain almost all the time in between periods - I had dyspareunia and also pain with almost any form of exercise or even just walking for too long. It was really, really bad for the quality of my life...
  11. JenniferRH - I am a female in my mid 30s. I was diagnosed through bloodwork about a year ago. Prior to that, I had really bad RLS. When I went gluten-free, my RLS cleared up. There were so many other symptoms clearing up, I hardly noticed it, but one day I just realized that I didn't have it any more. I think my legs have twitched or jerked maybe two...
  12. SierraBear - your post is old, but if you still check this post, you might read up on this possible connection between your type of psoriasis and gluten sensitivity: Open Original Shared Link Best wishes - April
  13. I also meant to add that there is absolutely no harm in starting them both on a gluten-free diet. Many people with autoimmune tendencies will do better on this type of diet. Bonne chance! April
  14. Bonjour Sarah, Since your husband has psoriasis, is it possible your husband and daughter have palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP)? Open Original Shared Link There is about a 1 in 6 chance that they also have gluten sensitivity - about 17% of people with psoriasis will eventually recover on a gluten-free diet. There have been numerous studies that...
  15. We use Kinnikinnick animal crackers for our youngest son. He has never had the gluten versions, but his older brothers have, and they both like the gluten-free version just fine. I think they are called Kinni-Kritters or something like that...light blue box.
  16. This is an old thread from last year, but I and my kids had symptoms this week after eating the Lundberg BBQ flavored chips. I have had problems with them in the past, but I had other intolerances at the time and assumed that was the cause. In my case, the kids were getting bored with what we were eating at home....I found myself looking at the bag...
  17. Prior to going gluten-free, my DH spots were mirrored (obvious clusters of spots on both elbows, itchiness on both knees/shins). I went gluten-free and the DH spots went away. Now when I get glutened, I seem to have one side that breaks out before the other side does....and if it is just a minor glutening, then it seems that I will break out on one side...
  18. Sorry - double post.
  19. I had my youngest on a completely grain-free diet for many months because of similar issues. I am positive that the primary issue was gluten, but he also seemed to react to corn and rice. I was told that sometimes people develop secondary intolerances when they are gluten intolerant, and sometimes those secondary intolerances can resolve over time after...
  20. Here is a link you might find helpful for explaining why TTG or EMA might be negative in a young child but antigliadin antibodies positive: Open Original Shared Link "Young children may not make the some of the
  21. Be careful with baby cereals - I would not use Gerber Rice cereal or Gerber Organic Rice Cereal, for instance. Too much CC risk. My youngest son used to reject and/or vomit these cereals prior to us finding out that he had gluten issues. We thought he might have a rice allergy - but after several months gluten free he was able to reintroduce gluten-free...
  22. Good stuff - your comment about GoodNights reminded me that there is a new kind of GoodNights that look like boxer shorts. My oldest wears them at night. The waist band (if one became visible) just looks like a dark green elastic waistband. So I doubt kids would be aware that it was a pull-up if they saw it.
  23. I just wanted to comment from my experiences with allergists...any blood test a board-certified allergist gives is likely to be for IgE allergies as well. My sons have these blood tests regularly for their peanut and soy allergies - tests with names like RAST, CAPRAST, ImmunoCAP. They have all been for IgE allergies. Some really englighted allergists...
  24. Oh, absolutely. There are different types of allergies and intolerances - and most doctors reserve the term "allergy" for IgE-mediated allergies - the ones that cause hives and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. IgE is short for immunoglobulin E. Celiac Disease is not an IgE-mediated allergy, but instead has to do with immunoglobulins A and G - IgA and IgG...
  25. I don't know. I did a quick search for two phrases, "elevated serum iga" and "hyper iga" and came up with lots of links that referenced a variety of autoimmune things. So you might just try searching for these phrases and reading the first few pages of links that come up. Good luck!
