ARCHIVED How Sick Were You On Gluten?
Ed-G replied to amberleigh's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How can I describe my symptoms? It depends on how old I was. In my first two years, it seemed that I had almost everything -- D, weight loss, bloating and distended stomach.....everyone, including my pediatrician, thought I was was going to die. Later, when I was older, I was still terribly underweight, since wheat was reintroduced into my diet. I also... -
ARCHIVED Baked Lays
Ed-G replied to monkeymc890's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Monkey, Except for the Lay's Stackers, Lay's are not made on dedicated lines, so there is a risk of cross contamination. And as for olestra, considering the shaky digestive systems we have I wouldn't trust it. Ed in MD -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed For 2 Months. Miss Sandwiches. Help?
Ed-G replied to geeze's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
NoGluGirl, Neither of the Wal-Marts in my area carries gluten free food, alas! I did see DeBoles rice and corn spaghetti pasta at the local grocery stores, however. I am hesitant to try it because I heard it doesn't hold up. Maybe I should anyway, just in case I'm wrong. That recipe is interesting though. Maybe I should find some sort of gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed For 2 Months. Miss Sandwiches. Help?
Ed-G replied to geeze's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've complained about bread since I was a kid, so I don't really miss it. But when I do have a hankering for a sandwich I used Bob's Red Mill -- it was available at the local Weis until a few months ago when it was discontinued . I'm going to have to look around for it ot find time to drive out to the Whole Foods in Baltimore. Now what I really miss... -
I had celiac almost all my life -- nearly 50 years. That's why I refer to myself as a banana baby. Way back then you eliminated everything and were started on bananas, and gradually added things. Ed in MD

ARCHIVED What Do You Think Triggered Celiac For You?
Ed-G replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know how many are going to roll their eyes, but I started showing symptoms after nine months. I lost weight, developed a distended stomach, and my growth was stunted. I have a brother who wasn't dx'ed until last year, however. He developed digestive problems, especially after drinking beer. BTW, I am aware if the Irish connectiion with celiac... -
ARCHIVED Babies And Celiac Disease
Ed-G replied to Emma's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I started showing symptoms right after I was weaned. I lost a lot of weight so much that I had a distended stomach, and I was terribly stunted in growth. Does your daughter have either symptom? Ed in MD -
ARCHIVED Can It Be Dh If It Doesn't Itch?
Ed-G replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's interesting....I've always had these red bumps on my back and sides also....so such so at one time that I was called "acneback" at times. They didn't itch, but they did have the tendency to feel extremely dry at times. Does this sound like your son? Ed in MD -
ARCHIVED Great Pamphlet For Celiac Newbies
Ed-G replied to lob6796's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
NoGluGirl, I have to admit that that is a great starter list. I meant to say it earlier but time ran away from me. Ed in MD -

ARCHIVED Diagnosing An Infant With Celiacs
Ed-G replied to mama2five's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can empathize. I had the very same symptoms when I was his age. They started when my mother finished nursing (at nine months) and I didn't get better until practically everything was eliminated in my diet. I am happy your son is now improving. Good luck to you both. Ed in MD -
I know, I've eaten there several times. Ed in MD

Hoo boy! Is that 1960's thinking I hear? My parents heard that when I was a kid. Ed in MD

Sandi, I've been there. I was dx'd as celiac when I was 1 or 2, and was put of an elimination diet (what they had way back in the Stone Age), and was for a while was down to bananas and cottage cheese. However, the same foods were reintroduced back into my diet. That's right, the very same foods that were causing the problems in the first place. And...

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Is brain fog the only symptom you get? Ed in MD

ARCHIVED I Cannot Do This Gluten Challenge Anymore!
Ed-G replied to jmoody74's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just to add my two cents in, I was diagnosed for celiac disease when I was about two years old by the family pediatrician. This was back in 1958/59, and there were none of the current tests available. The only thing available was the elimination diet. And after cutting everything out except bananas and dry curd cottage cheese, my symptoms dramaticly improved... -
I drink gallons of Classic Coke (or on occasion caffeine free Coke) and never had a problem. But I can't stand the diet Coke. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but it starts from the taste ( like overly sweet water) to how it settles in my system. Come to think of it, I don't care for any diet drinks . Ed In MD

I certainly believe it is possible. I seem to have the classic "cast iron stomach" although the rest of my digestive system is a disaster area. I get constipation, diahrrea, gas (lots of that), floating stools...the works. Just no stomach/abdominal pain. Ed in MD

....and have Iforgotten to mention..... ...the diarrhea? Ed inMD

ARCHIVED Test gluten-free Diet Length Recommendations
Ed-G replied to squili's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Personally, I wouldn't do it. I was discovered to have celiac disease back in the late 50's when ther were no tests for it, save elimination. Any gluten challenge would involve me being off a gluten-free diet for several months, and with no more than an inconclusive result to show for it. ED -
NoGluGirl, Thanks for the help. Actually I was in a venting mood last night, and the thread is reminding me of the frustrations of living with celiac. Thanks for being patient with me allowing me to vent. Ed in Md

ARCHIVED Do Symptoms Come And Go?
Ed-G replied to familyfirst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think everyone has the same symptoms either. I know I don't have the abdominal pain most have, though I do go from D to C and back again, have nice smelly stools, and have have the remains of red pimples on my back and sides (and I haven't even heard of DH until I began researching celiac disease on the net). I'm in a venting mood, so forgive... -
The real world: NO deep dish pizza. NO Whoppers or other fast food burgers. NO Kraft Mac and Cheese. NO soup and sandwiches. Desserts are problematic, especially brownies (another NO). Another NO to cheese fries. NO to fast food in general. Pick your way through Chinese food. NO to boxed specialty potatoes (au gratin, etc.) And a host of other...
