  1. Thanks for posting this list. It will be helpful for many. Anything that is used topically can come into contact with mucous membranes or be injested. Some don't worry about it but many of us do avoid gluten topicals.
  2. While most celiacs can tolerate distilled gluten like is in vodka or whiskey not all of us can. Alcohol in excess could contribute to continued issues. If you have to drink go with wine but it would be best to drop the alcohol if you can for a while until you have healed fully. Do not heavily supplement iron unless you know that it is needed. While B12 is...
  3. If you have an issue with gluten even very small amounts will keep the process going. To stop the antibody action you need to be very strict with the diet. It is not going to hurt to be very strict for a couple of months to see if it helps. Avoid restaurants and eat as much whole unprocessed food as you can. It is not unusual for an illness to trigger celiac...
  4. Unfortunately the only for sure way to know if gluten is an issue for you is to eliminate it completely. Blood tests and biopsies do have a fairly high rate of false negatives. It is significant that your GI issues have been relieved by the diet. You should consider continueing with it strictly. Pleva or Mucha Habermann Disease is very rare and I am so...
  5. It could be. Before I was diagnosed I used to wonder why I would have such a bad hangover from alcohol free beer. Turned out to be a gluten reaction. Your other symptoms do sound like they could be celiac related. Keep in mind that if you decide to give the diet a try that you will have to go back on gluten for about 3 months if you later decide you need...
  6. I have been both a bartender and cook in quite a few states. Restaurants usually run the bar glasses through the dishwasher at least in most places I've worked. If they don't they use a 3 well system for washing. One well for soapy water with brushes, one for rinse water and one with the sanitizer tabs. I always ask that they rinse the glass with plain water...
  7. I have to agree. I did live down south for a long time and loved it there but grits, no thanks. Give me my cream of buckwheat or buckwheat kasha any day but you can keep the grits.
  8. You mention that you are also adding in yogurt at the same time as you are doing the gluten challenge. That is not a real good idea as it may make it hard to tell which you are reacting to. It is best to challenge with one item at a time to avoid confusion. Also be aware that not all dietians are knowledgeable about gluten and celiac disease. Yours may be...
  9. I have never heard about iodine in dairy products or that the antibodies stay for 10 years. I have always heard it is 2 years. I had severe DH and used sea salt and uniodized for the first couple years gluten-free and also avoided it in supplements. I also didn't avoid salted products like the salt in canned veggies etc. I then added back iodized salt and...
  10. I don't know anything about those blood tests so I won't address those. What you are doing by binging on gluten is a challenge. Keep it up daily for a week. It can take up to a week for a reaction to appear. Also keep in mind that symptoms that are not tummy related may appear before the upset stomach, fatigue, depression or anxiety, muscle and joint pain...
  11. Just had another thought after I posted the previous response. It is not uncommon for us to have delayed reactions. It may not have been that meal that got you it could have been something from a couple days before. I hope your feeling better.
  12. Celiac is associated with depression, anxiety and possibly other mental illnesses. I have never heard of it causing people to lie though. What is he lying about? Some people will lie to get out of trouble. Some will lie to make themselves seem more important. Some will lie to make it seem their world is better than it is. Have you suggested counseling? It...
  13. Nice idea for new year Free from jerk ex hubby Thankful for kids and brother New year for new start. Got my diploma Looking now for a good job But any would be fine.
  14. That's really interesting. One thing I have noticed in myself and my children is that on gluten many times one eye will appear smaller than the other. When not under the gluten influence both eyes are the same size. I have noticed this in others also who are thinking they might need the diet because of symptoms. I wonder if that might be another characteristic...
  15. It could have been something else in meal that got you or it might just have been too much for your tummy. As stated by others if the label only says 'vinegar' in the US it is apple cider vinegar. Malt vinegar will say it is malt vinegar on the label. I always check distilled because I am sensitive to distilled gluten grains and usually go with Heinz because...
  16. I'm sorry you are going through this. I know how hard it is. When you say your B12 levels are fine what are they? And do you take a vitamin with folate? The reason I ask is some places consider anything above 250 fine when that is actually too low and also folate can give a B12 reading that is higher than it really is. What are you eating? Are you eating...
  17. Yes it is quite possible. It is also possible to have false negatives on both blood and biopsy so when you are done with all testing do give the diet a good strict try for the whole family.
  18. That pain could be gluten related. It is not unusual to have 'gut wrenching' pain or pain that is mostly in the stomach. I find name brand Pepto Bismal liquid to help a great deal but ask your doctor if it is okay for you to take before you try it. The last thing I expected was that my horrible, difiguring, joint problems would go into remission on the...
  19. No you shouldn't ignore the blood test. There are too many false negatives with both blood and biopsy. If she is gluten free that almost insures a false negative. If she has been doing better on the gluten free diet keep her on it.
  20. Has your Mom had her genes tested? She may not have one of those 2 genes either. Are you following the diet? If not you should give it a good strict try after you are done with any other testing. It is quite possible to have issues with gluten and/or be a diagnosed celiac without either of those two genes. I am someone that fits the celiac without DQ2 or...
  21. If dairy is bothering you a lot it would be a good idea to hold off on it for a while longer. What brand of yogurt are you consuming? If it is a flavored variety have you tried just plain yogurt that you can add a bit of jam or something to it to flavor? Some of the yogurts now have an awful lot of 'additives' to them including artificial sweeteners that...
  22. When the blood test is positive it is very accurate. The problem is with false negatives. If the blood test is positive it is very likely that celiac is present. As for the biopsy being the 'gold standard' there are many reasons for there being a false negative on biopsy. Those range from patchy damage that gets missed, we have 22 ft of small intestine...
  23. Your GP knows how sick you have been. You have positive blood tests and will most likely see a great remission in your health issues once you have been gluten free for a bit. There is a pretty good chance your GP might give you a diagnosis. You don't need the GI doctor to order the blood screening for the kids. If the kids are not having any health or mood...
  24. And some folks who almost died because of those false negative blood tests. I had the type of doctors Mushroom refers to. At least your doctors told you to try the diet. Mine didn't do that or even tell me what it was they were testing me for other than calling it 'sprue'. The word gluten was never mentioned until after I was finally diagnosed. I have a...
  25. The date on the bag is for an unopened package. I refrigerate the Ener-g when I open it and it lasts about a week or so. You do need to either toast or microwave for best results with that brand.
