I have to have the colonoscopy that they couldn't complete a few years ago due to inadaquate anesthesia and a twisted colon. Not something I can put off any longer as my 'lumpy gut' has traveled and although I have no digestive symptoms things are getting uncomfortable. Anyway my last experience was horrible. I had a reaction to the prep and the twilight...

ARCHIVED Pirate's Booty
ravenwoodglass replied to Newbie Celiac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't say for sure of course but you could be right about the BBQ, you could easily have been CC'd there. If you really liked the Booty you could wait until you are feeling better and then give it another try and see if the same thing happens. -
ARCHIVED Follow Up Treatment/testing
ravenwoodglass replied to sharkmom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's a good idea to have panels rerun, if you had one done at diagnosis, in 6 months to a year. It is also a good idea to have them run levels for your vitamins and minerals to see if those are improving. You should also have a scan to check for osteopenia or osteoporosis even if you are young. -
I would first request a full celiac panel from your regular doctor. The doctors should be looking for the cause of the low B12 and D not just telling you to take pills. The fact that the sensations have not resolved with additional B12, (they did tell you to take the sublinguals, right?) and the constant dizzyness could mean that gluten is negatively impacting...

ARCHIVED Pirate's Booty
ravenwoodglass replied to Newbie Celiac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't had any issues with any of their gluten-free products that I have tried. I have been known to eat a whole bag of the cheese ones in one sitting One thing you have to consider is that for some of us the reaction to gluten is a delayed reaction. Look at what you have eaten for up to 3 days before in addition to what you are that day. A food... -
ARCHIVED Kettle Chips - Labelled Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Those that are reacting to the salt and vinegar ones may be one of the celiacs who is reactive to gluten grain vinegars and alcohols. Technically since the FDA considers distilled vinegars and alcohols to be gluten-free they are allowed to call them gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Who Is Right?
ravenwoodglass replied to talula2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your new doctor sounds like a keeper. Your last sentence says it all. You must have seen a great resolution of your issues and the second doctor was taking that into account. Some of us never show positive with testing or the numbers are low so the doctors say that the test was negative until we get to the point where full recovery is not really possible... -
ARCHIVED Treatments-ala- Alpha Lipoic Acid
ravenwoodglass replied to Candy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Trying what your trying is dangerous as many have pointed out. You have been gluten free for a while and after someone heals it can take time for the GI symptoms to return. That is why doctors used to think children outgrew celiac, they now know that is not the case. Meanwhile you are reactivating the antibodies and they can choose any organ to impact... -
Then you do have to avoid rye and barley for sure if you have been diagnosed with gluten intolerance. There are some gluten free oats around but ones that are normally found are heavily contaminated through processing so stick with certified gluten-free oats when you try them. I would hold off on the oats until you are fully healed then have some 3 times...

Celiac is not an allergy it is an intolerance and an autoimmune disease. If you haven't already you do need to get a celiac panel done and possibly an endoscopic exam. YOU MUST BE eating gluten for these tests to have any chance of coming up positive. Even then there is a risk of a false negative for testing.

ARCHIVED Is It Possible Or Not?
ravenwoodglass replied to UsmcGf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The anxiety issues alone will most likely disqualify you for the military. Do not hide them. If you are in fact celiac you will suffer greatly during boot camp and training and once they decide that you are not a good fit for miliatary life it can take months to get you released. During that time you will not be allowed to take part in any activities and... -
ARCHIVED Shampoos/nail Polish?
ravenwoodglass replied to Birdie-Is-Tiny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Suave and Dove will clearly list gluten ingredients. Garneir is another good company for labeling. I use their shampoos and conditioners with no issues. Giovanni is another good company with a lot of their products being gluten free, if not all, but they do use a lot of soy. Burt's Bees makes a number of safe products and if you do a board search for... -
ARCHIVED Inspiration Short Story
ravenwoodglass replied to Miss Emily's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for posting this. It will be saved and I will be sending copies to my family. It describes what I and so many others have to deal with every day. I also do so miss the days, even though they were so very long ago, when I could get up and do what so many take for granted. So many times the choices are so hard. I use more than my share of spoons... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Toothpaste
ravenwoodglass replied to tbruno153's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You may want to look for Tom's of Maine toothpastes. The last time I checked all were gluten free and if that has changed it will be easy to tell as they list all the ingredients and what they are derived from. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Fact And Figures
ravenwoodglass replied to mindyandy420's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She does sound like she could be one of us. I am not of obvious asian descent but when a celiac gene panel was done I carry not one but two genes, one from each parent, that are recognized as being celiac genes in the Asian populations. These genes are also linked to a rare (in the US) for of adult type 1 diabetes found in people of asian descent. With... -
ARCHIVED New To Forum...think I May Have Glutened Myself
ravenwoodglass replied to Perskaya's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Bumble Bars are a good choice if you are not allergic to nuts. I like the cashew ones. Nuts and nut butters are good protein sources. Also if your doctor just did a colonoscopy he wasn't looking for celiac. You need an endo for that one. If your going to get an endo done then you need to get back on a full gluten diet for the test to have any chance... -
ARCHIVED Awaiting My Colonoscopy & Blood Results
ravenwoodglass replied to Mrwsga's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I hope everything went well during the procedure. Did they do an endoscopy, (tube down throat to look at stomach and small intestines) A colonscopy will not show celiac, you need an endo and biopsies for celiac. -
ARCHIVED Cycles Of Symptoms?
ravenwoodglass replied to Pivo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My symptoms for years were sporatic and for awhile we thought it was some form of PMDD since most happened for two weeks before my period. Then my period would come and I would have a couple days of D right before it started. Then I would feel fine with only occasional D for another two weeks then the cycle would return. Then things got much much worse... -

ARCHIVED How Does Celiac Cause Ms?
ravenwoodglass replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Celiac does not cause MS but it can cause damage to the brain that can present with symptoms that are the same as MS. MS is diagnosed by an MRI that will show lesions around the mylin sheath. These same kind of lesions can be found in a MRI with celiacs but they are in a different location. Also when they have doubt about those lesions a spinal tap can... -

ARCHIVED Need Help Evaluating Test Results!
ravenwoodglass replied to Baseballmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would advise he get the Ttg and also a total IGA to make sure he isn't IGA deficent as that would throw off the tests. If he is going to have an endoscopic exam looking for celiac he needs to keep eating gluten. However he does have postive test results and after all his testing is done he should give the diet a good strict try. With up to 30% of... -
ARCHIVED Question About Gluten Free Meat
ravenwoodglass replied to Miss Emily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Barley malt is not considered a grain, it is considered a natural flavoring. In addition modified food starch does not have to have the source listed in meat products. Are most chickens and meats with broth added safe, yes, are all of them? No. If modified food starch is added the source does not have to be listed so it is safest to check. This debate... -
ARCHIVED Question About Gluten Free Meat

https://www.celiac.com/articles/21672/1/Tip...ason/Page1.html "A gluten-free holiday dinner starts with a gluten-free turkey. Believe it or not some brands of turkey do contain additives that are not gluten-free" The following is from the USDA and pertains to meats and poultry and differ from the regs for other nonmeat processed foods.
