  1. Can you wear gloves at work when you have a cut or an open sore on your hands? While it is thought that the intact skin is a barrier to gluten by many it can enter your bloodstream through break in your skin or through a mucous membrane. In addition whenever you are working with stuff that others are consuming if you have a cut or sore it should be covered...
  2. I use Garneir haircolor with no issues and I am very sensitive. I also use their shampoos and conditioners. I have also used Herbatint, which is an organic haircolor but they did include a sample of a conditioner that did have wheat.
  3. There is a possibility that you might be able to deduct the cost difference between gluten free and gluten foods but the process is complicated and the best way to find out about it through a good tax expert. You also might want to check and see if Angel Food Ministries has a branch in your area. Also check and see if you may qualify for food stamps...
  4. Cleanses are not something many here would reccommend and can be dangerous for us. I wouldn't risk it, If you want to detox your system do it with whole unprocessed foods. Which coincidentally is what a celiac should start out with anyway when they first go gluten free.
  5. Coloring in foods is gluten free from what I have always understood. The one exception is caramel coloring, that does have the possiblity of being a low gluten source as it is made by heating starches. I usually call the company to make sure. Personally I avoid products with the made in the same facility.... Some of us are able to tolerate those but if...
  6. Jason I understand that in your line of work that you have no choice but to eat out with your coworkers. One thing though, being celiac does not make you defective, it is not something to be ashamed of. I think you may find that once you open up about being celiac that should put an end to the poking fun and will actually make things easier. It will also...
  7. And those 2 cents are very valuable. I tend to agree with your thinking.
  8. Not all GI doctors are as up to date on celiac as you might think. If they were I would have been diagnosed many, many years before I was and I would not have the permanent damage to my other organs that I have, in my case the brain and nervous system and kidneys. I most definately did have full anesthesia with my last colonoscopy but they did it intravaneously...
  9. A good source of into is the NIH National Institute of Health, you can also check what WebMD has to say as well as the Celiac Sprue Association.
  10. Gluten reactions can be delayed reactions and that can make it hard to figure out where we were 'got'. You need to look at not only what you ate right before you got sick but also for 2 or 3 days before. Keeping a food journal can help with this process.
  11. Before you try glueing this together it might be a good idea to see a podiatrist (foot doctor). Personally I would avoid the adhesives and it you don't want to see a doctor about it perhaps you could cover the nail with a bandaid until it grows in complete. That can take a while. I crushed my thumb and broke the nail off partially from below the cuticle...
  12. I am glad this is going to be over soon for you. You can make that bagel the last gluten item you ever eat since your endo is tommorrow. I do wish they would adopt the less barbaric mucosal challenge in this country. I hope you start to feel better soon.
  13. That gastro was correct, if you are gluten free they wouldn't be able to find celiac. If you are already gluten free the blood work could be a false negative as well. As to the endo though if you should decide to have an endo done after a 3 month gluten challenge if you make the gastro aware of your fears they can do the procedure under a general anesthesia...
  14. Would you be able to take some precautions? Do you wear a smock of some sort to cover your clothes at work? Do you have a place where you could at least change clothes or even perhaps shower and change clothes when your shift is done? Can you wear gloves, a cap and a filtering mask while working? Could your employer find a place in a dept. that the...
  15. The reason for the endo is because that is how they look at your villi. In most cases of celiac the villi are impacted. He wants to do the colonoscopy to check for other possible causes. If you were to want to cancel either test it would be the colonoscopy that I would cancel. That said even with an endo there is a risk of a false negative. The fact...
  16. You will find a great deal of difference of opinions on this subject. When I found out that the antibody reaction can occur whenever gluten contacts a mucous membrane I decided to cut it out of toiletries as well as my food. That basically ended a lot of my 'mystery' glutening and also within a month or so my arthritis and fibro had gone into remission...
  17. Have you been tested for copper by a doctor or are you simply going off of info you have gotten of the net? There are treatments for it.
  18. Jason, I suffered from depression and anxiety for over 30 years before gut issues developed. There are times when the neuro effects can hit us long before gut damage becomes apparent. The only way to be sure that it is not related to gluten is to become very strict with the diet for a while. My depression started in childhood and resulted in my trying...
  19. Before I was diagnosed my allergist did testing and I was allergic to 98 of the 99 things he tested for. I felt like I had to live in a glass box and my asthma was awful. I now only have actual allergies to 3 of those things, my yew bushes, soy and cat spit. As my allergist explained my immune system was in hyperdrive due to the celiac. With the immune...
  20. I either bring my own shampoo and conditioner or I have them just wet my hair. I also request that they rinse off the combs and sissors before they use them as normally they are soaking in a disinfectant. In the beginning I would just ask to them to let me read the ingredients of the shampoos and conditioners but usually they are in really big bottles in...
  21. Jason, The most important aspect of your post is what I have highlighted. If you were gluten light or gluten free with slipups when the stool testing was done that combined with your symptom relief is a diagnosis. You may be one of us for whom gluten has a strong neurological component, from your posts I would bet on it. If you are accidentally getting...
  22. Googles thanks for the input. He is in his mid twenties, did some time in the Army (for an undiagnosed celiac that was really hell on earth) and unfortunately for the social aspect of his life he lives off campus. You are correct though if he did live on campus he would never be able to ask for any special dietary needs from the college. He had a hard...
  23. Mind if I join the thread? Last cig at 3 pm today. I have been cutting down for a bit. Like when my cigs went to over $8 a pack. I started buying the roll your own and cut down from a pack a day or more to about 10 to 15 cigs. Today I got the gum. I have tried before but not succeeded, but then again I must admit I hadn't tried that hard. I have been...
  24. That I will do. I decided today is my last smoking day. I was done with it at about 3pm. I went and got some gum, took out all my ashtrays, It has been 4 hours with one piece of gum and so far so good. My birthday is later this month so hopefully I will be over withdrawl by then.
  25. Not after the first time it comes out of their mouth Since they think it is all in your mind the next time you get too hot and start to sweat use their shirt (while they are still in it) and when they get offended say, 'What your shirt can't be wet, it's all in your mind) Just kidding of course.
