ARCHIVED Type 1 New To Gluten Free
ravenwoodglass replied to sharkmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Please make very sure that the med is gluten-free, your pharmacist will check and you should get a handout with the company name that makes it so you can call and double check. You will get a better answer if you ask if the binders are wheat derived rather than asking if it is gluten free as wheat starch is sometimes considered gluten free. I went through... -
ARCHIVED Whats Going On?
ravenwoodglass replied to Aeman56's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You also may want to give him a simpler diet for a while. For example make his pork chop plain without the sauces, give him a baked potato with just butter, and a minimum of processed foods. For many of us the simpler the better at first as it reduces the chance of cross contamination issues and speeds up the healing. As to the BBQ what you can do is to... -
ARCHIVED Can New Outbreaks Occur While On Dapsone?
ravenwoodglass replied to nasalady's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I am sorry that you haven't recieved any replies. One reason may be because many decide that since dapsone can have serious side effects most just go on the diet instead. Just my opinion of course. I would imagine that even with the dapsone new outbreaks could occur if one is still consuming gluten or if they were getting enough CC to keep the antibodies... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Make It Stop?
ravenwoodglass replied to Aeman56's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I would have to disagree with this. Large amounts of Aveeno products contain oats, a no-no for most of us. A good soap to try would be a pure castile soap. I also use the All free and clear detergent and have no issues with it. -
ARCHIVED Should I Bother With This Test?
ravenwoodglass replied to L-C's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My advice is most likely going to sound over simplistic but how about you stop eating the oats for a while and see if things improve. If they do then add oats back in and see if the symptoms return. IMHO the folks with problems with gluten that are able to eat certified gluten-free oats are the minority not the majority. -
ARCHIVED Noone Else To Talk To.
ravenwoodglass replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It might help you a bit to get some counseling to deal with this on your own. You may want to consider this. The family history of mental issues could very well be associated with neuo predominent celiac disease. I should also note that for my famiy the meds that we were typically prescribed made us worse and in the case of my children caused some very... -
ARCHIVED Noone Else To Talk To.
ravenwoodglass replied to Roda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It sounds like he has been through a great deal of trauma. You mention that he is on meds for depression but has he been able to get any counseling to help with this? Unfortunately all too often they simply throw meds at us but don't give us any help with getting relief from the issues that caused the problem. Also worth investigating with the lower abdominal... -
ARCHIVED Whats Going On?
ravenwoodglass replied to Aeman56's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It can take a long time for the antibodies to leave the skin and even the tiniest amount of gluten may cause it to reappear. One issue he may have is a sensitivity to distilled gluten grains. Most of us are able to tolerate them but there are folks who can't, like myself. Thus I would suspect the BBQ sauce. It would be considered to be gluten free even... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Coming Back...
ravenwoodglass replied to coltsfan18's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree that you should drop soy for a while and see if it helps. It seems that many of us do have issues with it. Also make sure that you check all your meds, OTC and scripts for gluten and be careful of CC. In addition some of us have reactions to gluten that last for much longer than we would expect. It takes me about 3 weeks to fully recover from... -
ARCHIVED Need Ideas On A Snack Bar (or Similar)
ravenwoodglass replied to brigala's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I make up a bag of 'trail mix' to carry. I use Wylde pretzels (gluten and soy free) for sure gluten-free nuts, some dried fruits and some dark chocolate gluten-free chips. You could make this sort of thing up with any combo that she tolerates. -
ARCHIVED New Discovery- Packaged Dried Beans And Cc Potential
ravenwoodglass replied to sylviaann's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I also wash all dried beans before I soak them but I also will after rinsing well place them on a tray and look for anything that is not obviously the bean I purchased. I pick out anything unusual and then rinse again before soaking and haven't had a issues with this method. -
ARCHIVED Gradually Going gluten-free
ravenwoodglass replied to meanmachine22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thismay be true for some but research into celiac and guten sensitivity has a long way to go. I was firmly diagnosed as celiac even though blood testing did not show positive for me. It doesn't for up to 30% of us. I had gene testing done 5 years after diagnois when my blood and biopsy proven celiac daughter was told she couldn't be celiac because she... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac - How Careful To Be About Trace? How To Avoid?
ravenwoodglass replied to syren4444's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Your biggest risk with this gum is natural flavors. Your best bet is to call the company and ask if it contains wheat, rye or barley or any of their derivitives either in the product or the production process. That should get a better answer than just asking is it gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Benefits Of gluten-free Diet If No Allergy
ravenwoodglass replied to sharkmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If they are not diagnosed or showing signs of celiac themselves then it will do no harm for them to continue to eat some gluten foods. The largest risk is crosscontamination and making you sick. There are many who have a 'mixed' household and are able to do so successfully. -
ARCHIVED Personality Traits And Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to Crayons574's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Are you referring to 'personality disorders' or things like OCD, depression and anxiety etc? There is a link with celiac and the effects on the nervous system and brain that can show up as mental illness or undesirable traits like temper tantrums or excessive 'moodiness'. -
ARCHIVED So, Got The Lab Results
ravenwoodglass replied to JKEROUAC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have recently started taking alprazolam, a generic form of Zanax. It is made by DAVA Pharmecuticals. My doctor called the pharmacey as we sat in the office to check if they carried a safe form of the drug for me. I also had the pharmacey check when I got the script and then, trusting person that I am, I also called the company to verify it for myself... -
ARCHIVED Benefits Of gluten-free Diet If No Allergy
ravenwoodglass replied to sharkmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The biggest benefit for you will be that you will make your risk of CC much lower. Celiac disease has strong genetic factors and there could also be benefits for others in your family if they are reactive also but at a level or in a way that is not always recognized. Many doctors don't realize that there is a link for many in 'mood' issues, things like... -
ARCHIVED Bio-allergenix? Anyone Know Anything About This? Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to terribeth07's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have insurance of any kind it should pay for convential MD testing for allergies. Celiac is not an allergy though it is an intolerance that causes an autoimmune response in folks that have it. There are times when people will have both allergies and celiac of course. In my own experience an allergist (MD) saved my life as I do not show up in blood... -
ARCHIVED Bio-allergenix? Anyone Know Anything About This? Help!
ravenwoodglass replied to terribeth07's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the previous poster, this is snake oil. Have you had any testing for celiac? You should start with the blood panel and perhaps biopsy of the small intestine. Even if those are negative you should give the diet a good try to see if it helps as false negatives on celiac screening are not uncommon. -
ARCHIVED Md Wants To Do Biopsy Now
ravenwoodglass replied to jkr's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
A lot. As with gluten you will need to read the labels. A great deal of the gluten free baked goods have soy for example. Soy is one of the 8 major allergens so it has to be on the ingedient label if it is there. The most troublesome for me was to find a margerine that was soy and casien free. I finally gave up and for a few months used Ghee, which is... -
ARCHIVED Soy Intolerance- Will It Ever Go Away?
ravenwoodglass replied to GFMM88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been able to add milk back in but not soy. I fortunately can tolerate the lecithin but not the flour or oil. Everyone is different and you can perhaps try and add it back in after you are well healed. Your body will let you know. -
ARCHIVED Md Wants To Do Biopsy Now
ravenwoodglass replied to jkr's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can't write what I would like to about this doctor. I personally would find another GI and I would get my hands on complete records from his office and any and all procedures you had done. You may find that there were strong indications of celiac even without the biopsies as there are changes that can be seen in some of us but for him to not even take... -
ARCHIVED What Was In My Dinner?!
ravenwoodglass replied to scole2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It could have been the premade polenta may not have been gluten free, not all are. Also were you using a grill that had been used or was also being used for nongluten free food? That could be another source of CC. Or because some of us have delayed reactions it could have been something from the day before. -
ARCHIVED Self-diagnosis Or Gluten Challenge?
ravenwoodglass replied to Crayons574's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Talk to your doctor. He was the one that wanted you to go gluten free and he had reasons for suggesting this. In light of the fact that you have seen resolution of your problems he has diagnosed you. It may even already be noted in your records.
