ARCHIVED I'm Mad At Nature Valley's Granola Bars
ravenwoodglass replied to 626Belle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think we all understand your frustration. Have you seen Bakery on Main granola bars? They are made in a dedicated facility and have neither oats nor malt. My favorite is the pnut butter and chocolate chip. They also make really good granola's. If you can't find them at the market they do have a website. -
You may not think your being glutened but it sure does sound like you are. Do you take any scripts? If so if any are generics they may have changed binders. Have you eliminated gluten from nonfood stuff? Pet foods, craft and home repair supplies can also be a source of CC as well as lotions, shampoos etc. I am sure you know about all the kitchen precautions...

ARCHIVED Being Cautious Vs Obsession
ravenwoodglass replied to MollyBeth's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are being wise by being supercareful at first. We do seem to have a large range of sensitivity and you will learn what your body can handle in time. Were you diagnosed with blood work or biopsy or both? If you were diagnosed with blood test then the doctor can run the test again every 6 months or so for a bit to check your antibody levels. Your doctor... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free: How Long To See Dh Improve?
ravenwoodglass replied to JenR's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
The best reason is in my signature. I started out with DH in childhood that was misdiagnosed as poison ivy for many many years. The celiac in my teen years then choose to hit my joints, tendons and muscles and it wasn't until after I had my first child, after years and years of trying, that the GI stuff hit. Even when that hit the D was painless and I... -
Ener-g makes a bread that is yeast free. Have you actually seen a doctor who has diagnosed you with candida? Are you still on the gluten-free diet or are you skipping from one diet to another? Whatever you are trying you need to stick with it for a couple of months before you start investigating others. If you are doing a whole bunch of stuff at once...

ARCHIVED Help! Test Results...
ravenwoodglass replied to beansmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can also have neg bloods and biopsy and still be celiac. After you have done all the testing YOU choose to do be sure to try the diet strictly for a couple of months. Your body may give you the answer that the doctors couldn't. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free: How Long To See Dh Improve?
ravenwoodglass replied to JenR's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
No matter what the results of that blood test do give the diet a real strict try. False negatives are possible even with the Ttg. I have to wonder why he was reluctant to do the biopsy unless he was reluctant to admit he did it wrong the first time. -
The vision problems you describe sound an awful lot like ocular migraines. People don't always get a headache with these. When you say you tried the gluten-free diet do you mean for the a whole week or so or have you given it at least a couple of months? The diet will often get rid of these after a couple of months. Also I would be really cautious...

ARCHIVED Peripheral Neuropathy And B12
ravenwoodglass replied to Laurenlovespink's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Not all MRI's do not require injectables. I have had this one done and basically they just stick you in the tube with your head restrained. They will be looking for demylinating lesions that would surround the mylin sheath. Some celiacs, especially those of us with ataxia, will have similiar lesions but they will be in the 'wrong' place to be diagnostic... -
ARCHIVED (autoimmune) Asthma, Allergies And Skin Issues (eczema)?
ravenwoodglass replied to EmmyLouWho?'s topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Before I was diagnosed I was allergy tested and showed up allegic to 98 of 99 substances I was tested for. I had to keep my inhalor close at hand and took Singulair on a daily basis. After going gluten free I lost almost all of my 'environmental' allergies. I haven't had to use my rescue inhalor or Singulair since I was diagnosed. My allergist said my... -
ARCHIVED Help With Endoscopy Results
ravenwoodglass replied to rubyred's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am so glad to hear that the diet has helped you so much. Many of us do find that soy and dairy are a problem, good for you for figuring it out so quickly, it took me forever to figure it out. If that gold standard diagnosis is really important do get those biopsy reports to another more knowledgeable GI, from what I can see you actually do have one, your... -
ARCHIVED I'm Feeling Discouraged
ravenwoodglass replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It's tough right now. Keep putting in hoards of resumes and make sure you don't wait on one company to get back to you before you apply somewhere else. One thing that might help your spirits a bit would be to volunteer someplace a time or two a week. These types of positions can also help you meet people who might be able to help you in your employment... -
ARCHIVED Help With Endoscopy Results
ravenwoodglass replied to rubyred's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you haven't already I would suggest making sure that you have copies of the report and also get copies of all blood work or other tests you have done. Sometimes with females an OB/GYN can be helpful getting the bone scan and vitamin and mineral panels that you should have done at diagnosis. You can learn all you need to know about the ins and outs... -
Do you peel the apples? You may be sensitive to the resin that they coat them with.

ARCHIVED Help With Endoscopy Results
ravenwoodglass replied to rubyred's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"...The gastric mucosa was somewhat atrophic with petechial type erythema. The duodenal mucosa was normal expect some mild blunting of villi at the second portion of the duodenum. Retroflexion of the endoscope revealed a hiatal hernia...." You need a different doctor. Were you told to keep eating gluten and come back in a year or so to be rescoped by... -
ARCHIVED Nestle's Hot Chocolate
ravenwoodglass replied to JoeB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes barley malt can be hidden and is one of the most risky items for us. Wheat has to by law be on a label, barley and it's malt as well as oats and rye don't. One of the reasons why I always call with the words 'natural' flavors on a label unless it is from a for sure 'doesn't hide gluten' company. Rice Dream is one company that hides barley malt in this... -
Contact the drug companies that make those scripts directly. Many have programs for reduced cost or free meds when folks need them.

ARCHIVED New And Clueless
ravenwoodglass replied to wendstress's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the gluten free world. If you do choose to have a biopsy done, and it is your choice, do not stop eating gluten until after the procedure. The is a chance of a false negative with those even on a full gluten diet. You would still need to do the diet no matter what the results were. With that high of a blood test result many doctors are now forgoing... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Or Not
ravenwoodglass replied to farmer's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have a good doctor there. I hope you are now gluten free and on your way to healing. -
ARCHIVED Is Celiac Disease Sex-linked? Dominant Or Recessive?
ravenwoodglass replied to B R I A N A's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Celiac is not sex linked. One reason for more women having it would be childbirth. Celiac requires a trigger and for many women childbirth will bring it on. It is also neither dominant or recessive it is more of a genetic difference than a defect. I believe it is more of a haplogroup rather than a genetic mutation. Your best way to get accurate research... -
Glad you found us. One thing you could try to take a bit of the cooking stress away is to do as many meals that are naturally gluten free as you can. Things like stews, rice, meat and potatoes etc are naturally gluten free. There are mixes for pizza dough that even gluten eaters like. My favorite is the Gluten Free Pantry's French bread mix. I use a...

I know that many can't do it but when I get glutened I let my body purge. If I take something to stop the D I end up with more prolonged cramping and it seems to make the other issues just as bad as if I was continuing to gluten myself. The D day is rough but a warming pad helps the cramping a bit and I will usually have a migraine to so laying in bed is...

One of the most soothing things for me is Cream of Buckwheat. I use rice milk and add a generous amount of cinnamon. It does sound like something got you and I hope you find the culprit and are feeling better soon.

They are really good. The one I saw last night with the library has some of the best 'effects' I have ever seen in the show. Ever see any of the old ones with the doctor that wore the long scarf? I wouldn't mind seeing those on reruns again. Dr. Who and Dexter are the 2 shows I try not to miss.
