Welcome to the board. Read as much as you can here and ask any questions you need to. It can take a while to heal and you may need to cut out dairy products for a while. The villi that produce the enzymes to digest dairy are the same ones damaged by celiac. Many of us can add dairy back in after we heal. Do check your makeup and toiletries and if you...

Yes but if the broth had barley it would not be required. -
ARCHIVED Do I Have It Or Not? Some Say Yes, Some Say No
ravenwoodglass replied to TimothyRyan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi Tim, I don't know if you are aware of this but you can rebuild bone without stuff like Actenol or the like. Those drugs have some serious risks associated with them so make sure you get all the info you can before you diecide to take them. One of the biggest risks is death of the jaw bone. This is seen most often when we need to have extensive dental... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Tell How Sensitive I Am?
ravenwoodglass replied to IChaseFrisbees's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That was one reason I suggested that you get tested ASAP. If you are diagnosed the school may let you either have at least a microwave in your room or may even make a room with a kitchen available. You should have a talk with your advisor and also with the person in charge of dealing with students with disabilities. My DD for example was placed in senior... -
ARCHIVED The Problem With Strawberries
ravenwoodglass replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I shop at Wegmans, I don't think they are in your area, what they do is to put signs up in the produce dept that declare what has been applied to fruits and veggies. Stores now have to tell us what the country of origin is for our meats so hopefully soon there will have to be full disclosure on preservatives and coating in our fruits and veggies too. One... -
ARCHIVED Excess Stomach Acid

Your plan is a good one, your little brother is the one who is ultimately going to have to deal with saying no if stuff is not safe. Don't sell him short, educate him and give him the tools he needs to make a good decision on his own. He now knows that gluten is going to make him sick and he is the one who is going to have to be responsible for what goes... -
ARCHIVED Good News From Doctor!
ravenwoodglass replied to knitaddict's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wonderful news!!!!!!!! It feels so wonderful when we are able to abandon the drugs that we had to use for so long. I have a tackle box full and whenever I get a little bit down about health related things I open up that tackle box for a reminder of how far I have come. I hope your script is able to start living in a box under the bed rather than a handy... -
ARCHIVED Safe Edible Trim For An Outdoor Xmas Tree
ravenwoodglass replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Great ideas, thanks for the input. I will try and post a picture when it is finished. I have a flock of sparrows that 'trim' the tree every morning, they gave me the idea. I know just where to gather a bunch of pinecones and it will make a nice project for Thankgiving. -

ravenwoodglass replied to IChaseFrisbees's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Please don't eat that. If you really want Mexican make it yourself out of known safe ingredients. How long have you been gluten free? You should really get at least the celiac panel blood test done. Celiac is not the only thing that can cause gluten intolerance and some of the other things that can cause it need a doctors care to recover from. If... -
ARCHIVED Safe Edible Trim For An Outdoor Xmas Tree
ravenwoodglass posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I want to decorate a pine tree or two outside my house in edible stuff for the birds this year. I was thinking about stringing popcorn and cranberries but wondered if it might be risky. Would the birds just eat the stuff off the thread or do y'all think they might try to fly off with it? Any ideas? -
I am so sorry this is has been a bad day so far for you. Birthdays can be the worst when you are alone, I am a twinless twin so they are always hard for me but I try to do something that I enjoy, after I have a little private pity party. Sometimes it helps me to try and think of all the things that are good that I do have in my life and I concentrate on...

ARCHIVED Neurological Conditions

I have had RSD. It happened after I had surgery on my knee to repair the meniscus. When they removed the stitches a few days later I had lost all muscle from where they put the tourniqet down. The doctor was almost as horrified as I was. It is extremely painful. One thing they gave me that helped was amitriplymine at a very low dose at bed time. I don... -
ARCHIVED Celiac On House, Md Again!
ravenwoodglass replied to HAK1031's topic in Publications & Publicity
It turns out that whipples can cause damage to the villi, I did a search for damage from lead also and some research came back showing damage also but most research was using rats and the one that came up with kids also I couldn't access. Open Original Shared Link Whipple's disease is caused by bacteria named Tropheryma whippelii. It can affect... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Diagnosing Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to Konaa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are going in for a biopsy it is imperitive that you still be eating a full gluten diet. The risk of a false negative are very high if you are gluten free or gluten light. The biopsy can miss damaged areas even in folks that are on a full gluten diet and fully symptomatic, the damage can be patchy and we have 22 ft of small intestine so it can be... -
ARCHIVED Awful Symptoms
ravenwoodglass replied to Avasmom12's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Please don't do that again. We can't just remove the gluteny parts and not get sick. Celiac is an autoimmune reaction it takes only a very teeny tiny amount for us to reactivate the antibodies. We can't even safely use lotions or shampoos with gluten ingredients. I hope you feel better soon and as you said lesson learned, unfortunately the hard way. -

I agree with the others that you need to have a heart to heart with your boyfriend. There has to be a reason why he does not include you. It may be something to do with your relationship or it could have to do more with his family. Could there be something about his family that he is hiding from you? His family may be so dysfunctional that he is afraid... -
ARCHIVED My Psoriasis Is Gone!
ravenwoodglass replied to henny's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Great news. It can be really surprising how many things gluten effect in us till we stop consuming it. I laughed at the doctor that diagnosed me when he told me not to be surprised if many of my problems other than just tummy went away. After all so many doctors had told me to just learn to live with everything. I was still laughing at 6 months gluten... -
ARCHIVED Tired, Frustrated, Scared
ravenwoodglass replied to Kit.DaMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome. It sounds like you are looking at this in a positive way. It is so tough at first. My DD refused to shop with me for a while after I was newly diagnosed when I broke down in tears and ran out of the store. It would be another year or so before I found this site and the great and supportive folks who are here. Good for you for getting the... -
ARCHIVED New Here - Debating Going Gluten-free - Opinions Anyone?
ravenwoodglass replied to angelschick's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Amy and Welcome, I know how tiresome doctor can be and the search many of us go through can be quite frustrating and disheartning. You should consider asking for one more set of tests though, the full celiac panel. Your doctor should be able to just call in a lab slip for it or have you pick one up at the office. After you have the blood drawn then... -
Thanks for posting this I don't think I have seen it posted before. I have to wonder if those deposits are responsible for the UBOs that are found in MRI on gluten ataxia folks. I had ataxia and DH for over 20 years before the gut stuff showed up. The neuro who ordered my MRI was clueless that the bright objects were celiac related and thought perhaps...

If your boyfriend is willing to keep a gluten free house I would sit down together and simply tell her that. She seems to be understanding but may not realize that her son would not feel deprived without gluten goodies. I don't think it sounds like she will be offended at all and will simply increase the amount of gluten free goodies she stops by with.

ARCHIVED Muscle Cramps And Bone Pain
ravenwoodglass replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Your not alone. In myself I think it is linked to the inflammatory response that my body has to gluten. When I was first diagnosed I thought it might be because of nutritional deficits but I healed up very well GI wise and my nutrient levels are now really good. What helps me when I get glutened and this happens is making sure I am doing gentle stretches... -
Doctors in the US in particular seem to be resistant to the more sensitive tests. The best example is the mucosal challenge. This is where they use a gluten suppository (used for rectal challenge) or apply it to the membranes of the mouth and then biopsy the tissue about 3 hours later. These tests are very sensitive but are not in use here because of that...

ARCHIVED Please Help! Worried About Upset Stomach
ravenwoodglass replied to GFyogi's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
1) Is there an adjustment period to going gluten free? Yes, it can be difficult at first to ferret out all the hidden gluten and that combined with needing time to heal can make the first few weeks kind of up and down. Gluten can also be a neurotoxin for many of us which can lead to withdrawl symptoms until it completely clears the system. 2) Is is...
