  1. I wonder what books these are? I had DH from the age of 6, I was covered in blisters over both arms and legs and eventually it covered every area of my body. It can most certainly show up in children and even in infants. Stolly- The speed with which the breakout resolves is variable even with the same person. I have had blisters that stayed for...
  2. I have. I went through all kinds of tests because as a late diagnosis person my regular doctor wanted to make sure it was not a growth of some kind. It wasn't. All they found was that my intestines are 'misplaced' (the actual term the ultrasound tech used) and that the walls of my intestines were thickened. I had been gluten-free for 4 years at that point...
  3. The residue from the powder can become airborne or if we rub our nose, eyes, or another area that has a mucous membrane or if we eat, smoke a cig or do anything that enables those molecules to come into contact with our mucous membranes we will get glutened. Gluten does not have to be digested by the stomach to get into the system and posion us.
  4. Welcome to the board. You can now start the diet to see if it helps as you are done with the endo. You may have your answer by the time you go for the results. If you do end up with a negative result on the biopsy do be sure to give the diet a good strict try for a couple of months anyway, biopsies sometimes miss the damaged areas so a dietary trial is...
  5. Celiac can effect just about any organ and yes for some the most prominent feature can be heartburn. It was one of the most prominent signs in my DD. Upon endo the GI stated that she was not what he would call a 'fullblown' celiac yet but that if she wanted to avoid ending up like me she still needed to be gluten free. Total villi destruction is the end...
  6. I would not advise occasionally cheating. The autoimmune reaction will remain active if you do. You also run the chance of triggering some of the more serious illnesses that come from noncompliance. The fact that you are small and stuggling to keep weight on says to me that you perhaps are not fully healed yet. Have all your symptoms resolved? Have you...
  7. Another thing that may help is good ole Pepto Bismal, name brand. It works like magic for me so I thought I would mention it in case the vinager doesn't help.
  8. I have also be glutened by powdered gloves, I got myself good not too long ago. They can and do use oat and wheat starch in some brands of gloves. There is stuff that will come up if you google household gloves and wheat or oats. There were quite a few pages about kosher regulations so I think it may be an issue for those that eat that way also.
  9. They were related for me. I was thought to have MS, I didn't I had celiac. Because I went undiagnosed for so long I have not had full resolution but I have come a long way. I no longer need canes or walls to walk, I can actually feel when I have to go to the bathroom and make it there most days, I don't drop things all the time anymore (although my dog...
  10. It is best to wait to explore whether you have other disorders related to celiac if you do not have glaring symptoms of any. The reason why I say this is that many things will 'disappear' on the gluten free diet and celiac impacts so many systems that many problems will clear on their own. Many of the diseases related to celiac are present because the celiac...
  11. Your doctor found celiac changes in the biopsy but apparently you still have some villi left, so he has called it latent celiac since total villi destruction is the technical criteria for a celiac diagnosis. I also hate it when doctors use this term since it implys that it is not yet celiac so you can go ahead and keep poisoning yourself until all the villi...
  12. So glad you found something that helps. One other thing you may want to do is put cotton mittens on him when he sleeps, if he will tolerate it. It can help if he itches while he sleeps. I hope he is all healed up soon.
  13. I would be looking for the source of the contamination, something has had to trigger the DH. Since it cropped up after the baby was born and home perhaps something that she is using on the baby is not safe. Lotion, powder, baby wipes anything new that wasn't used in the home before. Is she on a new supplement? Or could her trigger have been something...
  14. I agree with the others on the condiments most likely being a problem. Just to confuse things more sometimes our reactions can be delayed so do check also the stuff you ate one and two days before the reaction not just that day. My main reason for posting is to caution you that you make sure that the contrast they give you is gluten-free. Not all are....
  15. Can you find a GP or an Internist? If you have a number of problems you may want to consider seeing one instead of a GI. The ulcer could also be a result of the gluten, many, including GI doctors don't realize that gluten can do that also. They were my DD's main complaint at her stage of illness. She only had some esionphilictic (sp) changes in the small...
  16. Have they done a stool exam for occult blood? Did they find any? I would ask for that first before I let them do the endo and colonoscopy. If they don't find occult blood than chances are you are not bleeding internally and your body is taking some time to heal. Have you asked your regular doctor for IV iron infusions? I would try that route. If you...
  17. The Enterolab tests are not like the ones for food poisoning where you have to 'play with it' and use little scoops and that sort of thing. You basically pooh in a container then throw the lid on it, bag it, freeze and send it. But you already know that gluten is toxic to you so if you can do the diet without an authority telling you to do it then you really...
  18. I also agree that you should not see the doc your Mom works for. Have you asked your GP for a referral to a GI? I would go that route or I would just ask my GP to order the celiac panel. It does not have to be a GI doctor that orders one. The time the doctor spends with his patients and his bedside manner also do not determine how many of us he actually...
  19. I was severely impacted nerve wise before diagnosis. As the other poster mentioned celiac does do a number on them. In my case nerves have grown back, I have leg reflexes again that I lost in childhood, but it has been a long slow process. If you need to be gluten free and you are not then your blood is carrying the antibodies into all your body systems...
  20. I would agree with Enterolab testing. His symptoms sound a lot like mine and many of us. Celiac can impact the brain and the thyroid so the first thing I would do is get him gluten free. As far as the gene goes, well I carry DQ9, this is a gene that is associated with folks from the Orient and supposedly is not often found in the US. How I ended up...
  21. Renee, It will get better, promise. I learned to live with this because I would be dead now if I hadn't. I am one of the 'lucky' ones who don't show up on blood work so it took me a very long time to get diagnosed. The symptoms you have will get worse, and they can impact any body system, the brain, the joints, gallbladder, stomach, skin, kidneys, heart...
  22. As mentioned you do not need to get anyones anyones permission to eat gluten free. The exclusion you did, and the reoccurance of symptoms when wheat is added back in is diagnostic. Especially with diagnosed celiacs in your family. The need to get any other testing done is up to you. Gluten is a neurotoxin for some of us. That can lead to depression...
  23. You have gotten some great advice already but I am going to give you a bit of a different take on this event. You have been VERY ill. It does not sound like they have kicked you out permanently, you stated that it is for 2 semesters. This tells me you are welcome back after that point. Could you perhaps use that 2 semester break to get your health back...
  24. IF someone has a nonceliac gluten intolerance that is caused by a bacteria then sure antibiotics would be a 'cure'. But true celiac is a genetic differnence that causes an autoimmune reaction in the body. It is not caused by bacteria but by eating a diet that we are not genetically adapted to. Our immune system recognizes gluten as a poison and in it's...
