  1. Sorry to be such a bummer but McDonalds is not as safe as you might think. I am wondering what gluten free 'cakes' you are finding there. Even the FF are risky, I wouldn't advise anyone of us to eat there.
  2. This is fantastic to know. The WIC program is a good one and I am glad to hear that this program doesn't cut off at age 6 or so. Many also don't know that programs like WIC and this one you mention are not just for those on 'Social Services'. If you would know of a web site that folks can get more info from that would be really helpful. Thanks so much...
  3. With the combo of symptoms and a family history plus a postive blood test she is celiac. Most doctors do not want to diagnose us without us being at the end stages of the disease, total villi destruction. My feeling is that the capsule endo is not going to tell you anything you don't already know. Whether you want to spend the money on the test is really...
  4. Having had the misfortune of having a son who when he went in was only having the sort of off and on issues you speak of I think I perhaps can answer this. The nature of celiac disease causes something called excaberations. These occur as a result of physical or mental stresses. When they happen they can impact multiple body systems including the brain...
  5. Here is one possible way you may get your regular doctor to 'diagnose', if you have been ill and have been making frequent visits to your doctor and then he doesn't see you for a year or so and you walk in a different energetic person who has no complaints and then you tell him the only change was the gluten-free diet he may very well at least put gluten...
  6. Curiosity got me and I did a search, I was surprised by one thing that I found that may be of significance. It may not be that the gluten intolerance was caused by the mold but more that the two are found together. I will look into this more when I get some time, it does peek my interest a bit. Open Original Shared Link "Quite interestingly, the...
  7. Yes, the same as anything we consume.
  8. I don't have any specific sites but will suggest that you google celiac and mold. Mold might cause similar symptoms but I don't think it would destroy villi. You could of course, have both issues going on and the autoimmune process involved with celiac might even give you more severe symptms from the mold. Once you clear up the mold don't be too quick...
  9. I would find articles on DH from places like the NIH and Pubmed and print them out and bring them in with you on any visit to a derm. If this person was a Physicians assistant then I would print them out and send them with a short letter to the head of the derm group. She needs to be educated fast. Going over her head and pointing out her stupidity with...
  10. Fascinating. I do wish they had shown a full shot of the finger after the accident from the front. It does seem that he removed the fleshy tip and not any of the bone. As someone who has also sliced off the tip of a finger and had it grow back by itself I would have liked to see better the full extent of the injury rather than just a top down shot. I...
  11. I found this while looking for something else. "We appreciate your concern in regards to gluten-free foods. As perhaps your own investigations have disclosed, wine itself is gluten free. However, there may be some possible contamination from other sources, including yeast, fining agents, filters, fortifying alcohol, and barrel sealing materials. So...
  12. You should ask for a blood test and if you choose a biopsy for diagnosis. Do remember though that the tests can give you a firm yes but if they are negative you would still need to try the diet to be sure. But.... with you Mom having just been diagnosed your chances of also having celiac are really strong with your symptoms. Dietary response is also a valid...
  13. Your doctor will be the one to make the final decision but that would be the course I would be given. I am, or used to be, in the woods all the time. They used to give me a 14 day packet with a decreasing dose. Just check to be sure they are gluten free of course. They always worked like a charm for me but you can't take them too often. As long as you...
  14. "i asked the pharmacist and she suggested oatmeal bath. i wouldn't put a celiac into a bath of oatmeal!" That was what my Mom used to do for me, and we wondered why I never was without a breakout. Of course we thought it was poison ivy. My Mom had the exact same rash as a kid growing up on a farm her mother used to scrub the blisters with a scrub brush...
  15. You already have one, your body has given it to you. Up to 30% of us show negative on blood work, even if close to death. Dietary response is a valid diagnostic tool. Actually the best one there is. You little one got the celiac genes from somewhere.
  16. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/squ.../henryrash1.webp http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/squ.../henryrash2.webp (i am also not sure why my pics aren't working... is it because i am new?) I was able to access the pictures by dropping the bracets and the img from the link. Your poor boy he must be really miserable, and yes those...
  17. This young man has a future as a journalist. His letter was very well written and brought up some very important points in a short, concise easy to understand manner. Great work.
  18. I also experienced C when I was first diagnosed. I was overjoyed to go 3 days without a bowel movement, my PT was less than thrilled. I was also starving and nothing seemed to fill me up. My body was so happy to be able to start absorbing nutrients that it told my brain, more, more, more!!!! I upped my fiber intake to take care of the C, for me sweet...
  19. Doctors can be real idiots when it comes to celiac, and we suffer for it. Please don't let them poison you for a few months to prove something you already know. I know if a doctor ever tries it with me I will be bringing in a letter from my lawyer stating that they will be held responsible for any monetary loss and for compensation for pain and suffering...
  20. Sounds like my D routine for years. I went through 10 years of the morning D before it progressed to the point where it lasted all day and then would wake me with extreme pain every night for another 5 years. I also showed up negative on blood tests, even at the end when I was close to death. Unfortunately noone told me what celiac sprue was so I never...
  21. I had the same experience with a boxed wine. I do so wish they would put ingredients on the labels of alcoholic beverages. I will never buy a boxed one again but haven't had an issue with any of the bottled wines I have purchased. They are not required to let us know if they have put any flavoring agents in the beverage, and they don't.
  22. My DD felt the same way about the snickers. In fact she wrote her college entrance exam about the way she enjoyed snickers bars. She ate them with a knive and fork and made quite a procedure out of it. It was a wonderful essay dealing with how deprived she felt about celiac and the simple joy that having a snickers gave her. Not only did she get into her...
  23. Call your doctor and get him to call in a lab slip. You shouldn't need to see him as he has seen you not to long ago. Whether you want to biopsy is going to be up to you. You do need to continue to eat gluten until the biopsy is done to get the best chance of a positive. Keep in mind though that both the biopsy and the blood test are only conclusive if...
  24. Have you checked all meds and supplements she is on? You need to do this with the maker to be sure, the pharmacist can give you the fact sheet with a number to call as the drug ingredients will give no indication on gluten statis. Generics are really risky as they can change binders at will. Is she doing any arts and crafts at school? Clays, glues, pastes...
  25. I just noticed you are in Australia, do they use the Codex wheat starch in products that is supposed to be gluten free by processing? Perhaps that is an ingredient in the muffins. I have heard from others that they have reacted to it, although they can label things gluten-free with stuff that has it included.
