ARCHIVED Northern California On Fire
ravenwoodglass replied to fedora's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My prayers are with you all. I lived in Vallejo during the 70's when there was a 2 year drought and although wildfires were a big concern we never got hit as bad as you are now. I will never forget watching our favorite lake, Berryessa (sp) dry up before my eyes. So much wild weather going on right now all over the country. It is scarey for all of us... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin D Suppresses My Breathing
ravenwoodglass replied to Gerri's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Gerri one other thing- have you tried different brands to see if maybe it is a binder or something else in this particular variety that is causing the trouble breathing? -
One last thing, your doctor did tell you to avoid the sun right? The best way is to use clothing that is specifically designed to act as a sunblock. At the very least you should be wearing a hat with a wide brim but ideally you should also have the rest of your body covered. The thought of wearing long sleeves, a hat and pants or full length skirt may...

ARCHIVED What Causes Miscarriages?
ravenwoodglass replied to kprince's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Please enjoy the moment and try not to worry. While many of us will have trouble concieving and there is a bit of a higher rate of misscarriage lots of us do have full term healthy babies even when we were undiagnosed and poisoning ourselves every day. There are a lot of different reasons for miscarriage and I don't think they really know why we sometimes... -

ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms - Strange Sensations - Healing?
ravenwoodglass replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am glad you found something that worked for you but I do want to add a quick caution for those of us who have DH or suspect that we do. Kelp is high in iodine, the reason you took it for hypothyroid, but those of us with DH could suffer an intense breakout of lesions if we take it. Not saying for sure and for certain this would happen but thought it would... -
ARCHIVED Help With My Sons Lab Results
ravenwoodglass replied to bec's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Those were positive tests. It appears from your description of his problems that he is primarily effected neurologically and often it can be years before those of us who are predominantly neuro effected to have obvious GI distress. During that time the damage to the nervous system and brain continue. Many of us will experience crippling depression and... -
ARCHIVED Oh My Goodness
ravenwoodglass replied to Canadiangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
In the US modified food starch in FOOD muct be labeled as wheat if it is and in food if it is not specified it must be corn. This same rule does NOT apply for meds or supplements. There are no labeling regs for those and the binders can change at will. Also with supplements ingredients like wheat germ oil and barley grass etc can and are often in items... -
ARCHIVED Npfgcmusicgrl101
ravenwoodglass replied to NpfGCmusicgrl101's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
IF the burgers are just turkey they should be fine. If not you should check with the maker. One quick way that is often successful is to put the brand name of the item into a search engine with the word gluten. Many times the companies gluten statement will show up. If they are premade and contain any flavorings you need to check before consumption. -
ARCHIVED Gluttened, Not Sure If It Was Worth It
ravenwoodglass replied to IMWalt's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well you have challenged 5 times with the same result. Do you believe you body yet? It is not just the immediate reactions that should encourage you to remain gluten-free but also the possible fatal 'side effects' that may not be as obvious. I am sure you want to be around as long as you can be, don't let gluten take you away from your family. Some of... -

ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms - Strange Sensations - Healing?
ravenwoodglass replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
What you are feeling could be healing or it could also be a sign that you have gotten CC'd. If it is CC your GI tract should let you know a few days after the increase in the nerve symptoms. The neuro issues do take a long time to heal and some may not resolve completely. A lot depends on how long you have been effected and how severe the damage is. For... -
ARCHIVED Need Gluten For Lab Tests?
ravenwoodglass replied to betsyabailey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In addition to what was already said the tests on young children are often unreliable. In countries that test routinely they test asymptomatic kids at age 4 and again at around 11. Dietary response is also a valid form of diagnosis, have you seen resolution of the problems that made you decide to try the diet? What has been his reaction if he has consumed... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Return Seven Days After Glutened.
ravenwoodglass replied to Woolygimp's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is not unknown for it to take up to a week for the reaction to show. Those of us who were put on doctor assisted elimination diets are told to add one food at a time for a week before we decide the food is safe for this reason. The antibody reaction can take a while to show up depending on the individuals system. When we have delayed reactions it can... -
ARCHIVED Help! My Kids Are Going To Kill Each Other!
ravenwoodglass replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You have gotten a lot of great advice already and I would like to add one more idea relating to the fighting over the TV. Give them a schedule for who gets to choose. This can be added to a chore list on the fridge. Let them pick their shows on alternate days, if the one who's day it isn't doesn't like the others choice they can find a book or pick a chore... -
I just did a quick search using the words celiac and lupus and gluten and lupus. There is actually quite a bit out there on the subject including articles that refer to the misdiagnosis of lupus that was in reality gluten related. There are also articles that talk about having the symptoms of lupus go into remission on the gluten-free diet. Has your derm...

ARCHIVED I Can't Give Up My Dr. Pepper
ravenwoodglass replied to Lockheed's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you ever tried any of the Virgil's Sodas? I really love their root beer and it is made with sugar not HFCS. Still of course isn't great for you but if you feel you are 'addicted' to it chances are there is something in there that you body does not want, even if it is gluten free. When we become addicted to stuff it is because our body produces chemicals... -
I haven't been doing very well lately healthwise and I don't think celiac related. I really need to find a doctor. I checked with the support group in my area and they were of no help at all. Anyone have any doctors that might be between Rochester and Syracuse, but not in the 'big' cities, that they can steer me to?
-
As was stated you should have your doctor run panels on your folate, also ferritin, iron and B12. Your doctor should also do a standard complete blood count and all the other usual tests. Gluten free specialty foods also tend to be rather carb dense so you should make sure that your doctor is testing your blood sugar levels on a regular basis. Most do...

ARCHIVED Free Of Foods Growing In Number
ravenwoodglass replied to ShayFL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Iodized salt is only a problem if you have DH, the skin form of celiac. The iodine in the salt, and for those with DH even fish that is high in it, can cause an outbreak of DH. The oldfashioned way of diagnosing DH was to put iodine on the skin, bandage it and wait to see if the rash appeared. I don't know the exact physiological reason why DH is activated... -
Thanks for posting, it was a good article at least until I got to this "Increasingly, their customers don't necessarily have food allergies or celiac. They just think they do. "As much as 28 percent of U.S. citizens believe they are intolerant to some foods," said Mintel spokeswoman Joanna Peot." Unfortunately this thinking leads to responses like one...

Nan are you taking a lot of supplements? Many of us do when we are first diagnosed to try and make up for the deficiencies we have due to the disease process. Some of us may have difficulties with certain binders and some ingredients. Also if you are taking any homeopathic remedies many of those are formulated with gluten grain alcohols and because we...

ARCHIVED Getting Children Tested
ravenwoodglass replied to WendyG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac can be triggered at any point in life. If the children are showing signs of celiac they should be given a trial on the gluten-free diet even if the blood is negative. If you want to biopsy wait till after then before you begin being gluten-free. If they are symptomless and negative on bloods then if they later start to show symptoms the tests... -
ARCHIVED Could Undiagnosed Celiac Lead To Rage/mood Swings?
ravenwoodglass replied to ItchyMeredith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes it can have effects like that. Negative blood tests are worthless because they do miss up to 30%. I hope he goes back to being strictly gluten free soon. Also please insure that your Mom has a safe place within her home and a cell phone. The rage attacks can be severe in some cases and her health and safety is very important also. Sometimes the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Label On Dog Food
ravenwoodglass replied to Daxin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's actually really important for all of us. The pets lick themselves and deposit gluten residue all over their coats, we pet them and then we get 'mystery' glutening. Opening a canned gluten pet food with my family can opener got me for months. I thought I was reacting to tomatos. About the only thing I use regularly canned. Got a can opener for just...
