ARCHIVED Anybody Care To Help Me Out?
ravenwoodglass replied to Rpm999's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Did your doctor call you back yet? I could be wrong but I don't think there is anything they can do about the reaction except wait for time to pass it from your body. Treat your body as gently as you can right now, not that you have much of a choice. Go with simple foods, rice (plain), fruits and veggies and get as much fluids as you can. Sleep as much... -
ARCHIVED I Thought Aunt Jemima Was Gluten-free.
ravenwoodglass replied to MySuicidalTurtle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would wash out the bottle as soon as it is empty (ooops a spill ) and then fill it from a bottle of pure maple syrup. Bet she won't know the difference. -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Daughter Tests Positive For Igg
ravenwoodglass replied to celiacgirls's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do you know what her starting levels were? Is she still symptomatic? Have you checked all her meds and supplements? Does she use arts and crafts items that may not be gluten-free? Things like clays and paints can be a source of CC. Does she eat stuff like Lay's chips? They are famous for gluten free lists of things that are heavily CC'd. It can take... -
ARCHIVED I've Decided To Start A Gluten Elimination Diet Today
ravenwoodglass replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"Oooooooooooooooh good point. Perhaps I'll make the test date a couple days after the party instead. I'll drink red wine at the party (still may have unexpected effects if my digestive tract is in better shape?) and avoid eating anything with gluten. Do you think a restaurant/banquet steak would have gluten (like in a marinade or something)?" Unless you... -
ARCHIVED Another Round Of Tests
ravenwoodglass replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Blood tests for celiac are not very accurate for children under 4. In countries that screen for celiac in all citizens they begin testing of non symptomatic folks at 4 and then test again when the child reaches puberty. Do not rely on blood or endoscopic testing on your 2 year old, the best test will be a challenge which is what you have done with the pizza... -
ARCHIVED Anybody Care To Help Me Out?
ravenwoodglass replied to Rpm999's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac can and does cause the type of mental issues you are dealing with. If your celiac blood work came back positive you can be pretty sure you have an issue with gluten whether you have D or not. Up to 50% of folks with celiac present with constipation and not D sometimes for years. Hopefully the doctor will get back to you soon about the reaction you... -
ARCHIVED I've Decided To Start A Gluten Elimination Diet Today
ravenwoodglass replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you can find Kinnickinnick bread their Italian bread is good and I sometimes use their hamburger buns for garlic bread. Make sure also that you check and make certain the rice noodle soup packets you got are gluten free, many are not. -
ARCHIVED I've Decided To Start A Gluten Elimination Diet Today
ravenwoodglass replied to Joyous's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you are going to try out the diet and then challenge it the time to do it is NOT two days before you go to the party. You may very well be to sick to go. If you have to do things like this, (and you really should do the diet strictly for at least a month or two to see if it helps), I would make the party my challenge point. Hopefully you will not react... -
ARCHIVED In Utero Behavior!
ravenwoodglass replied to skikat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
There is at least one celiac gene that can be triggered before birth. I believe this occured with my DS but not my DD. My DS was over 6 weeks overdue and in utero he had some of the 'autistic' repetitive behaviors that he showed as an infant. He was very active and he began pulling his hair before he was born. It created some interesting startle reactions... -

ARCHIVED Follow Up Appoinment
ravenwoodglass replied to jennyj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Of course I will add you to my prayers Jenny. I am glad you are healing well and hope that everything goes smoothly. The tests your having are really easy, just make sure that if they give you a contrast that it is gluten free if they use it at all. The fact that you are gaining weight is good. Have you mentioned your concerns about the incision site... -
ARCHIVED New To Celiac, Want To Make Sure My Medications Are Okay
ravenwoodglass replied to Beloved's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can call the company yourself. The pharmacey should have the insert that came with the drug, this will have the companies name and possibly the phone number. Some pharmacists are clueless when it comes to gluten so I try to contact them myself when possible. Another thing you can try is putting the name of the drug into a search engine along with the... -
Hi Kate, I hope you are going to be gluten free no matter what those gene tests say. If they are only looking for the two 'celiac' genes there may be other gluten related genes that they miss. Enterolab can do gene testing and stool tests for antibodies and you don't have to do a gluten challenge to do them. They also look for the 'gluten intolerance'...

ARCHIVED Curious!
ravenwoodglass replied to sister golden hair's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think there are a lot of us in that boat. Although they are trying to fight to save mine I wonder if the thousands of dollars we are spending on crowns is really worth it. As for the adhesive you are wise to wonder. Your best bet for an answer is going to be to call the company that makes it. I sometimes am a sneaky pete and write down the phone numbers... -
ARCHIVED Having A Real Hard Time With Bread
ravenwoodglass replied to nj celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have to also vote for Kinnickinick. My favorites are the Italian white bread and the Pizza shells. I use the pizza shells with hummous as well as pizza toppings. Be sure not to forget that almost all of our breads need to be nuked or toasted for the best texture. I didn't realize that the first year and my poor DD got to take sandwiches to school that... -
ARCHIVED Clinical Trial Recruiting
ravenwoodglass replied to JustJust's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Absolutely nothing would ever convince me to be part of this type of testing. Not that they would take me with DH. My biggest concern with this med is that it seems to address the gut issues but not the neuro ones. I am curious if after testing they will be able to say that the med stops gluten absorption period, not just that it alleviates the gut symptoms... -
ARCHIVED 4 Year Old Results
ravenwoodglass replied to fultsy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is time to get him on a trial of the diet. Endoscopic exams and blood tests are notorious for false negatives, especially with young children. Do give him a dietary trial. It can be tough once they get in school but many deal with it. The parenting section of the board should be helpful to you when the time comes. -
ARCHIVED Symptoms ( Fat Loss Especially) & Celiac
ravenwoodglass replied to djsurreal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am glad you were able to get the blood test done. Regardless of the outcome of the tests be sure you try the diet. Fat loss is real common with celiac, especially in the areas you are referring to. If you google celiac and click on Images you may be able to find some pics. If celiac is causing your loss it should resolve once you are on the diet.... -
ARCHIVED Cottage Cheese
ravenwoodglass replied to sarad1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have eaten those in the past with no problem but after the first one or two I started just getting a for sure gluten-free cottage cheese and adding an organic no sugar added jam. Much less expensive and much less artificial junk that way. -
ARCHIVED Unemployed, Unable To Work, And Stuck In A Rut.
ravenwoodglass replied to thecookingnerd607's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One thing you can do is access the help that may be available to you in your city. There are food banks and those may have vitamins available. If you explain that you are gluten free they can stick with stuff like rice, veggies, fruits and such that will help fill out what you can get on food stamps. You may also be able to find a couple of roommates... -
ARCHIVED New Here And My Head Is Spinning!
ravenwoodglass replied to Rosebud710's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have to second this strongly. I have not had a cold even since about 6 months into the diet, that's 5 years. Now that my body doesn't use all it's antibody reactions to fight itself it seems to work real well. I should mention that I was always sick with something from childhood I was a child and adult who got every bug and had a nasty case of chronic... -
ARCHIVED Wheat Germ Oil
ravenwoodglass replied to tndrheart44's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It may be too big to get through intact skin but gluten is absorbed and reacts with mucous membranes. There is also the issue that anything that gets on your hands, oils in particular, are going to remain on the skin and thus can be transferred to your mouth by your hands when eating. You would be wise to stay away from it especially if you are new to the... -
ARCHIVED Uveitis, Also Called Arthritis Of The Eye
ravenwoodglass replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It turns out there is a connection. Unfortunately a lot of the articles that came up require you to be a medical professional or a registered user of some of the sites to access the full reports but if you google "Uveitis and celiac" there were a number of articles that came up including many that reported this disease going into remission on a gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Barely Low Iga Levels
ravenwoodglass replied to JustMe75's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You should still consider gluten. The best course may be to eliminate both gluten and dairy for a bit and then after she is feeling well, perhaps in a couple of months, do a deliberate gluten challenge. If she has a problem the challenge should make that very clear if she has been gluten-free for a while. When doing the challenge just remember that gluten...
