You should be careful as many gluten free products are loaded with sugar to make up for the taste...however...your daughter is 6. She could just finally be feeling better after being sick for awhile and be acting like a normal hyper 6 year old
I'd just wait awhile before you start getting her tested for anything else until her body fully adjusts!

if being gluten free without a diagnosis helps you feel better and more healthy, then I say...who needs it!!! I've been diagnosed but back then I didn't know anything about going gluten free...If it were happening today and I tried it on my own, I'd save the Dr's bills and do what made me stop getting sick!!

Thanks, I don't know when I'll be back in NYC...although I crave Mozerelli's already!! Maybe I will give Babycakes another try.....it was pretty shady in my mind because there were a lot of things going on over there that day, a few fights broke out and a lot of cops were involved, so it just made me feel uncomfortable and the donuts weren't that great, but you're right...its totally possible that it was an off day, so maybe I'll give it another shot if I'm over there.
I certainly didn't think anyone was rude or arrogant...i was actually quite surprised at how pleasant and helpful everyone was!! And, like I said about Bloom's...while I appreciate them having a celiac friendly restaurant, I really wasn't pleased with any aspect of it. But overall the trip was great! I just wanted to post my experiences in case anyone was planning on going soon.

So I just got back from my weekend in NYC, it was the first time since I had been there since I was 13 years old (I'm over half way to 30 now
) and it was my first time since being gluten free. I have to tell you Mozerelli's blew my mind.......they were so accommodating and the food was so delicious. I ate there twice because I liked it so much. They sell gluten free desserts from a place called my dads bakery (you can order online but not as many as there are in the store) and those cookies/cakes were probably the best gluten free items that I've ever had.
We went to Risoterria for lunch on Saturday and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had as well...I wish we would've had more time (or a larger appetite) to try some more of their food because it was so delicious. They had shirts that said No flour power and put a "celiac seal of approval" flag on a toothpick in all the gluten-free items, which I thought was cute.
I wasn't impressed with Blooms Delicatessen Cafe, at all.....I was actually kinda pissed off about my experience there. I'm usually the last person to complain when someone tries to accommodate for celiacs folks like me because I so greatly appreciate it. This place was recommended by the celiacs group of NYC and I wanted a good sandwich...so I order a roast beef sandwich and told the waitress that I wanted american cheese on it. She then told me that American Cheese was not gluten free. I asked her what she meant, just theirs or in general...and she told me that no american cheese was gluten free. I just told her that was inaccurate but I would have mozzarella instead. She then proceeded to give me a lecture about how she has been a waitress for 15 years and she took a class about celiac disease and that no american cheese is gluten free. This disturbed me on so many different levels....mostly because, hi...I'm the one suffering from the disease, so I think I have a higher knowledge about what is and isn't safe and lecturing me about it, because a class was taken? Well I honestly wanted to walk out and give my business elsewhere...it was insanely frustrating. She then went on to mess up my order and complain about me to everyone working in the restaurant (there were like 4 people in the joint besides myself) and I got dirty looks from everyone while I sat there eating.
I was perfectly nice about it too, I was just letting her know that it was inaccurate to say that all american cheeses were not gluten free but that i'd be happy with mozzarella...I'm not a very rude person, I mean, I was probably more surprised than anything but a lecture was not warranted.
I've actually never even heard of any american cheeses not being gluten free...I mean, I'm sure there are some but I haven't heard of them!!
We also made the trek to Babycakes....I have to advise you to skip this place. It's in a VERY shady area that is in the shadows of the Williamsburg Bridge and honestly, the cupcakes/donuts weren't worth the trip out there. I've heard all the hype and I was honestly so excited, but it was a huge let down.
All in all it was a great trip and I highly recommend Mozerelli's and Risotteria. I wish I could go back now to eat there

Honestly, McCormick is one of the only taco seasoning brands I trust.....You'd be surprised as to how many have wheat flour in them that can slip by the eye on the first few glances. My wonderful boyfriend made me some turkey tacos with this huge thing of taco seasoning his roommate had in the house, without looking at it....because we've had tacos so many times before, that it didn't phase him. I was knocked out of commission for like 3 days, because they were delicious and I had like 4 of them!! When it happened, I asked him what he used and he went to get it, the look on his face was priceless...he felt so terrible. He did cater to me a lot when I was sick, which was nice...but I think I'd rather the not getting sick part

I understand what the certified part means, my question was......are people who are affected by oats still going to be affected by these.
-
Explain to me these "certified gluten free oats"......are they not still oats? I've had some gluten free oats products and still gotten incredibly sick. Does this mean that I can't have any form of oats, or am I crazy?
-
whoa whoa........are kix gluten free?????
-
Yasmin is no longer being made, the generic is soon going to be the only available form of that particular pill.

Five Guys is actually more safe than almost any other fast food restaurant. I've contacted them before and if you watch while they cook.........they have one grill for the burgers, a completely separate grill for the buns and the fries are in a dedicated fryer. They're very helpful and I've eaten there countless times without getting ill. I wish some of the people on this board did a bit more background research before jumping to conclusions and scaring people away from places that really do go out of their way to help folks like us!!

I spent my weekend winery hopping in Hershey, PA with my boyfriend this past weekend and thanks to his IPHONE and an app called "Gluten Freed"...we stumbled upon Pizza Sorrento. It's around the corner from the Hershey Lodge and they office gluten free pizza's as well as pasta dishes. I got the pizza and it was great! It's so nice to be able to go out and enjoy a nice Italian restaurant (it was much fancier than I anticipated) while on vacation. I highly recommend anyone trying this place if they're in the area!!

love her and her website. can't wait for this cookbook!!!

I too have not eaten Amy's in several years. It always triggered some form of reaction for me.
-
Thank you all!!! I've very excited about this trip but I'm also incredibly nervous. I don't usually eat out and the thought of eating out and then taking a subway with no bathrooms somewhere kinda gives me a mini anxiety attack......
-
HAHAHA. I didn't even read my post like that. whoops!! :0)
I definitely am going to look into those two restaurants. Thank you

I'm going to NYC for the first time since being gluten free. I'm starting a new thread because all the old ones just go through a list of gluten free places in the city. I'd like to know where you have all gone for a fancy dinner out with my gluten-eating boyfriend. We'd like to go somewhere special

i think we all understand and rely on the products that we use to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Celiac Disease is as easy or difficult as you choose to allow it to be. Is it challenging? Absolutely. Is it the end of the world? No chance. You still have many many options at Whole Foods. Their hot bar lists the items and ingredients, you can read whether it is safe or not, right on the glass...if you have questions about it, you could even ask a chef there. Granted, that doesn't mean it was prepared on a gluten free dedicated line, but it still gives you options. You don't need to live your life any differently than the next person, you just have to live it smarter!

i usually just stroll in with my box of nut thins or something. i am always the person with the non-fancy purse to make sure i can carry my food
most of the time, its my friends weddings and they get it anyway. I've called caterers and they've promised me a good meal and I still chicken out when I get there. No one should care if you bring in your own food!
-
the huffington post isn't really a credible news source. i don't waste my time reading it because all of their articles are generally inaccurate!!
-
cold turkey!!! the longer you let gluten linger in your diet, the longer it will take for your body to heal itself! the sooner you eliminate the stuff from your diet, the sooner you'll start to feel better!! the withdrawal symptoms are nothing compared to the aftermath of a glutening in my opinion
-
You certainly can't walk into a place and demand that they accommodate you. I'd be afraid of what would end up in my food as well and it's not the caterers fault that you have to pay for the event, it's the event planner. Sometimes you can contact them and explain your situation and they'll just charge you less. I've done this several times and usually if you're kind, patient and pleasant about it...people are willing to help you. Being spiteful and demanding won't help our cause at all!
-
i agree. i just use foil. sometimes the crazy crap that's on the grill is more of a pain then just ripping off a piece of foil and knowing you're 100% safe!
-
No caterer is obligated to cater to you and your food illnesses or allergies but I'll be honest with you. I don't know a good one that wouldn't want to make sure you were taken care of. I've been working in event planning in DC and Baltimore for the past few months and we are working with Classic Catering in Owings Mills right now. If you're looking for a good caterer who truly cares, I recommend them for sure. Not that I'm trying make a sales pitch, just my experience up here!
If it's an event that you'd like to attend, since it seems like it's pretty big and would be fun. I'd express my disappointment in the catering company to whomever its appropriate to do so and just either eat before or bring my own food. Celiacs shouldn't have to miss out on fun things because other people don't get it!

I could get on board with the gluteny term!!
my coworkers come up with every word they can involving gluten because they find it funny. "no no, you can't have this, this is gluten-laden" ha. heard that this morning.
but while they poke fun.....at least they care enough to be knowledgeable about my gluten issues!!
i'm not sure i can get on board with the glutenized term though. it makes me feel like someone who needs a doctor immediately haha I'm not sure why. sort of like "Nurse, this woman has been glutenized, we need a shot of immodium and some sprite stat!!"

Bangor Maine Area?
in Meet Up Room

I can't answer the Bangor question but I don't know of a group that wouldn't let you join them just because you're not officially a Celiac! If you're gluten free (or even if you aren't and just learning for a spouse/family member or friend) you're welcome......it's about educating folks and helping...no judgments from us!!
