  1. My fiance and I recently got invited to go see some friends about 2 hours away from where we live. I'm nervous about going but I really want to and I don't want to let Celiac get in the way of doing what I want to do. I've been feeling quite good lately (almost normal ) so I feel like I'm ready. Here is what I have considered to try and make sure things...
  2. I also wanted to mention the possibility of bacterial overgrowth of her small intestine. After I was diagnosed and treated for that with antibiotics I felt significantly better. For testing I had a tube put up my nose and down into the intestine while under sedation to get a sample but I have since heard of less invasive ways of to test for it. Just another...
  3. Celiac can cause decreased absorption of B12 and many other vitamins. Low B12 could definitely contribute to her feeling unwell. B12 shots or pills that dissolve under her tongue would probably be good for her. She might also be anemic which her doctor can easily test for and prescribe iron pills or iron IVs for a while if her levels are quite low. Dizziness...
  4. Does your school have an office dealing with disability and equity services? That might be a good place to turn. Not that I consider Celiac a disability but you know what I mean. You deserve to be able to eat safely and I would think your school would have a responsibility to help you do that. If you have an ombudsperson service at your school they can help...

    ARCHIVED Timing Out?

That's actually very helpful. It's good to know that it happens to someone else. I thought that it might be something I was doing wrong or something wrong with my computer/internet. It's a very smart feature that the page it goes to has a copy of the post so you can copy and paste it and not have to retype the whole thing.
  6. I had a follow-up endoscopy at about 4 months after diagnosis because I was still sick and also in the hospital for an unrelated medical emergency. I then saw my GI for a 6 month follow-up and he just did blood work for antibodies and hemoglobin and I think some other things. At least getting a Celiac panel is probably a good idea. If your antibody levels...

    ARCHIVED Timing Out?

It usually occurs when I am posting a reply. I
  8. Often when I post, it will not work and I will have to log back in and repost. It is not a big deal as the page it goes to has a copy of what I just tried to post that I can copy and paste to post again. Is it because I take too long posting and I time out? I am definitley not complaining; I think this board runs very smoothly and efficiently. I just...
  9. I knew someone once who had Raynaud's syndrome, I think it was called. Her fingers and toes would turn cold and blue sometimes due to constriction of the blood vessles. I don't think it was associated with eating fruits and vegetables though. I think getting too cold sometimes triggered the episodes her. I know this sounds weird but could you possibly be...
  10. Whoops, I think I misinterpreted your post. Sorry. I thought you couldn't have eggs. So if you can have eggs, I think you could probably use one egg. I'm not 100% sure on that though. Maybe the recipe was trying to minimize allergens by excluding eggs or I know that recipes for a bread machine sometimes use egg replacer instead of eggs so that you can...
  11. I don't think you should use egg whites unless you know that it is only the yolk that bothers you. The whites have more proteins so are more likely than the yolk to be a problem with allergies and intolerance. I have used an egg replacer before with good results but I guess if you can't find one that won't help you. If you are looking in the future make...
  12. Lilly, you are not alone in having accidents and I am sure there are many others. When you are as sick as gluten makes you, all you can do is your best and unless you spend 24/7 in the bathroom sometimes there will be accidents. I cried for hours the first time I had an accident in bed when I woke up sick in the middle of the night. I felt so embarrassed...

    ARCHIVED Stuttering

That is a very interesting thought. Definitely something to think about. I always figured that I didn't have Celiac until it was triggered as I was recovering from pneumonia last August, but I have toyed with the idea that perhaps I could have been asyptomatic for sometime up until then. Mostly because at diagnosis my B12 was low enough to require shots eventhough...

    ARCHIVED Stuttering

Thanks for the replies. Ravenwoodglass, it sounds like gluten gives you some pretty intense neurological symptoms -- very scary. Patti, what you're describing sounds a lot like stuttering. Knowing what you want to say but not being able to get it out is exactly the feeling. I guess if you're not repeating sounds or words it wouldn't classically be...
  15. No problem, I'm glad I could help!
  16. You have to use the HTML code: so instead of putting the letter you use the code for the 'a with an umlaut' which is & # 228 (no spaces but I had to put them so it didn't convert it to the script.) Sch
  17. Has anyone noticed that they tend to stutter when glutened? I had a mild/moderate stutter as a child (as did my father) but it pretty much went away by the time I was a 8-9 due to speech therapy and my parents doing all the right things you're supposed to do with your stuttering child (ie don't rush them). Although I probably stutter a little more than the...
  18. Thanks all for your points of view. I will try to turn my negative emotions into positive action. I realize that being angry at the world is pointless and juvenile. I know I should just try to let go but knowing that and actually doing that are two very different things. Thanks
  19. I just found out that my maternal grandmother died from cancer of the small intestine. I was young when she died so I never really knew in depth about her illness. My grandpa said that she was always pale and anemic and had fertility problems and the doctors didn
  20. Ginger tea helps a bit with nausea for me. I find drinking lots of Pedialyte is better than water because it also replaces the lost electrolytes which can help prevent headaches and other symptoms of dehydration. Lots of sleep is good too -- eating gluten causes a fatigue that I can't even explain. Just being there and supporting her as it sounds like you...
  21. That's kind of what I was thinking too. I know that RA and some other autoimmune diseases are sometimes treated with Methotrexate which I think is a chemotherapeutic. So since Celiac is an autimmune diseae maybe chemo was in a way 'treating' your Celiac disease. It reminds me how greatful I am that Celiac doesn't need the kind of harsh treatments that so...
  22. I tend to stick to bland foods after a glutening or when unwell but I follow my appetite/cravings within reason. If you're not already, you may want to try eating many little meals throughout the day. I think it is easier for an already stressed digestive tract to avoid eating too much at once. It is also a good way to keep your blood sugar stable throughout...
  23. After I was diagnosed with celiac and went gluten-free, I felt somewhat better but even after a few months I was still sick everyday. When I was having a follow up endoscopy at about 4 months they also put a tube through my nose and down into the intestine to get a sample to test for bacterial overgrowth. I tested positive and was put on antibiotics, for...
  24. My suggestions are all very simple but they have helped me a bit. First I do the whole bedtime routine (brush teeth, wash face, meds, etc.) at least an hour before I plan on going to bed. I find all that stuff kind of wakes me up a bit so I avoid doing them right before bed. I usually also steam my face before bed (just with boiled water in a bowl)
  25. Thank you so much for the responses. I will definitely be staying away from all things coconut. I'm not too upset about parting with coconut but it is a little disheartening to add something else to the list -- a list I'm hoping doesn't get to long. I'm almost afraid to continue with the food diary for fear of finding out there are more things that bother...
