  1. When I had a kidney infection, I got very ill very quickly. I was feeling fine in the morning and then was admitted to the hospital by the evening. Nausea, vomiting and incredible fatigue were the prominent symptoms for me. Fever and confusion were also present as the day went on. If you're feeling very, very ill and it came on quickly it could be a kidney...
  2. I was diagnosed with this by a direct sample of fluid from my small intestine taken during a follow up endoscopy. I was on antibiotics for a month and felt significantly better afterward. The doctor said that celiac is a risk factor for bacterial overgrowth because all of that undigested, unabsorbed food makes a good environment for bacteria. If your doctor...
  3. If you have to get an MRI they can sedate you or give you something for anxiety. I think the claustrophobic aspect of the MRI gets to a lot of people so I think they usually give you the option of taking something for anxiety before the procedure.
  4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Wishing you much health and happiness!
  5. Here is my grandpa's favourite joke: A little old lady goes to the doctor and says, "doctor, I have this problem with gas, but it really doesn`t bother me too much. My farts never smell and are always silent. As a matter of fact, I`ve farted at least 20 times since I`ve been here in your office. You didn`t know I was farting because they...
  6. Target makes me wish I were an American! Their housewares department makes me loose my head. I've brought an icecream maker, fondue set, and many other things at Target that I've used about once. If I lived in the States I would be at Target everyday. It's so disappointing after a going to Target on a trip across the boarder and then coming home and...

    ARCHIVED Stupid Doctor

He was a pretty old guy so hopefully retired soon. I feel a lot better after talking to my GP and hearing that she thought he was totally wrong to say that. I'm just trying to forget it and not let it affect me. I have a great GP and good docs so far so I guess I was due for an idiot like this guy. I certainly wasn't looking forward to going to the gynecologist...
  8. Lots of prayers to St. Roch: the patron saint of dogs and those who love them.
  9. Is your husband's hockey bag anything like this ? The smell of my fiance's hockey bag makes me gag when I walk by it! And Febreeze is not allowed on the hockey bag because he thinks it's too sissy!

    ARCHIVED Stupid Doctor

I'm glad everyone else was equally appalled by his comments. I thought I was just be oversensitive. I was able to talk to my GP who referred me to him and she was equally horrified and extremely apologetic. She wanted a second opinion about something and so she sent me to him because he is new in town and I would get in to see him quickest. She assured me...

    ARCHIVED Stupid Doctor

I saw a gynecologist last week and it was a very upsetting experience and I can't stop thinking about it. He was looking at my chart and reading how I have type I diabetes and Celiac and he asked me If I wanted to have my tubes tied. I'm 24!! When I told him I was planning on having children, he said "Well you don't want to pass your diseases on to...
  12. I 100% percent agree! The priest at our church right now always tells a joke or funny story before his sermon. Laughter is a gift. Laughter has been a huge help to me in the last year of my life, not to mention this last week while I was suffering the consequences of a glutening. It think it's great that different people have different types of sense of humour...
  13. Amen to that. My life became a lot easier when I accepted that people will not always agree with me and that often times I can learn a lot from other people's criticisms of my actions/thoughts/ideas. I am forever grateful for my parents repeatedly reminding me that if I ask for advice, I better be ready to stomach the solutions and suggestions that people...
  14. I can only speak for the asthma and I haven't found much improvement with my asthma since I was diagnosed and went gluten-free. My asthma has never been severe though. Interestingly, my (non celiac) fiance eats gluten-free with me and has seen significant improvement is his asthma. We're still trying to figure out if it's wheat that bothers his asthma...
  15. My grandpa ALWAYS says "practising trumpet". My fiance plays trumpet and the first time I brought him to meet my grandpa, he was asking Ryan a million-and-one questions and when he asked him what his hobbies were, Ryan said practising trumpet. My grandpa and I almost died laughing! Poor Ryan . At least it broke the ice though. My grandpa brings up that...
  16. I may be the only one who finds this video anything more than mildly amusing but I saw it today and I laugh harder every time I watch it. I'm having post-gluten grumpiness so my fiance has been finding me funny clips on youtube to watch and for some reason this one found my funny bone. I think I've even seen it on TV before and didn't find it that...
  17. For me the acute "food poisoning " stay-within-arms-length-of-a-bathroom type reaction seems to last for about 24-36 hours and then gradual improvement over 7-10 days. I agree that it likely varies between people. But you could probably expect to be able to eat normally and feel more like yourself by two weeks after the fact. Sorry you're not well...
  18. Um . . . you're 46?!?! You HONESTLY do not look a day over 36. So is living with Dingos the true Fountain of Youth? I accidentally glutened myself on Wednesday evening (with the stupidest mistake in the history of Celiac Disease) and I was finally able to get some sleep last night. Not sure if it was the gluten or my crazy blood sugar but I had some...

    ARCHIVED Poll

I haven't eaten out since being diagnosed but I am really starting to want to. My fiance and I used to go out for supper with friends every other Friday and I really miss that. I've been contemplating trying either the Outback or the Keg but I'm scared. I don't seem to have too many other foods that bother me so maybe it wouldn't be too hard. If I do decide...
  20. I'm down with that as long as I don't have to play anything above the second Ab above the staff. Otherwise I recommend the use of ear plugs for all in earshot. Did you ever watch the the Smoggies and the Suntots? I loved that show. It was a Canadian show but I think it played in the US as well. Open Original Shared Link Emily, is your picture...
  21. Flutes in perfect tune -- nobody would believe that! Yeah, learning to play with open holes was a bugger but it definitely improved my hand position. The only thing that kept me from throwing my flute at the wall was the fact that I paid so much for. I wish I could find a concert band to play in. I miss high school band. Good times! I didn't march though...
  22. You play flute? So do I! I hadn't played much in the last year but recently got back into it. I was out of practice and had to put one of the corks back in because my pinky wasn't covering the hole. I have an Emerson that I brought in first year university that I saved up for sooooo long to buy and I cried pretty much the rest of the day for spending so much...

    ARCHIVED Guten Free Food

There are in Ontario. I don't know about elsewhere. I've heard the Keg is good also. I haven't eaten at either since being diagnosed but if I do eventually eat out it will be at one of those places.
  24. I have no experience with children so I can't comment on that aspect but your description of how you daughter acts is very similar to the way I feel when I accidentally eat gluten. I'm a huge snuggler and when I'm sick with anything besides a glutening, nothing comforts me more than physical contact. But the times that I have been glutened, I could hardly...
  25. You can make a simple caramel by dissolving sugar in water and then boiling off the water. It won't be a creamy sauce though if that is what you are looking for. Here is a site that shows how to make candy apples. I am hoping to make them for Halloween. You could probably use their recipe for your caramel depending on what you need the caramel for. ...
