  1. Very Frustrating Emily . I'm sure your parents are paying enough for that retirement residence that they should cater to his dietary needs whether or not he has "medical proof". It's maddening that they wouldn't work with you to ensure his optimum health . I do agree with everyone saying that Colin's diagnosis is a good thing. I'm just feeling a little...
  2. I had trouble gaining weight back too. I don't have any great ideas but I can tell you what I did. My stomach never felt up to big meals but I just tried to "graze" a lot throughout the day to get the calories I needed. Nuts (especially almonds) were good high calorie snacks that I liked to eat throughout the day. I also made sure I didn't fill myself...
  3. Yeah, another chameleon picture! So guess what . . . my brother officially has Celiac disease. I informed him he should be tested after I was diagnosed but he didn't want to be . . . Brothers . He did however later go gluten-lite upon my urging to see if it would help with controlling his bipolar II (mostly depression) symptoms. Well, he finally got...
  4. Thanks for clarifying the gallon conversion Peter. I'm firmly rooted in the metric generation and get awfully confused doing conversions. Very confusing that there are two different gallons. Everything I learned in school was metric. It always drives me crazy when recipes use ounces as a measurement! My measuring cups have cups and mL!!! And then fl. oz...
  5. I paid 1.09/litre yesterday which I think is just about $5/gallon. There would be VERY long line ups if gas went as cheap as $3.30 gallon which would be about 75 cents/litre. I don't think gas has ever been that cheap since I've had my licence. I wonder why gas is more expensive in Canada? * I get confused with imperial gallons and "metric gallons" so...
  6. Yes, it definitely looks like it could be a bad glutening experience! I would certainly want to stay away from whatever put you in that state! Well except for the fact that I really would like to sample some absinthe. <---- new av. edit: found a better av picture. I did ride a horse before (although I don't really remember this experience). I don...
  7. I love it! But I am feeling quite jealous. YES! I have noticed that Susie is quite a chameleon, always looking different in each av. Always quite lovely though!
  8. Yes, yes, yes, definitely do this! It's such a gift. Not only for your daughter, but for any kids she may have. I can't wait to show all of this stuff to any children I have so they can feel like they actually knew their grandma on some level. I found an unfinished medical school application in the box . . . my dad didn't even know that she contemplated going...
  9. Wow, this is bizarre ! Hard to even comprehend. I certainly hope she is able to get the mental help she requires and maybe a gluten-free diet as well. It's hard to understand why the boyfriend wouldn't have reached out for help earlier but I guess I don't know what his circumstances are either. Maybe he could benefit from contact with a mental health professional...
  10. That was terrific! I've never seen this before. I don't know why I have such preppy, yuppie dreams. Trust fund kid has such a negative connotation but the whole cape cod/Hampton's thing just makes me giddy! Lovely! All things with horses just seem so preppy. Besides my yuppie Cape Cod July 4th fantasy I also often imagine myself at the Kentucky...
  11. Emily, I hope both of your parents get better speedily. They're very fortunate to have you to help them out. So I met with my mom's university friend. She had accidentally taken a box of my mom's stuff when they've moved out of the place they shared and thankfully she is a bit of a pack rat so she had kept it all these years and discovered the box in...
  12. Yeah that was funny!!! They were all pretty funny. The blue sign with all of the people and the guns and the deer was weird and scary -- I want to know what it means! Patti -- "open range"! He must of got a good laugh about that! A few years ago I used to see a turkey right in the middle of this one neighboUhood. I saw it a couple of times and then...
  13. I'm not sure about gluten in egg dyes. I would think it would be okay but I definitely don't know for sure. Here is a cool site you might want to look at: Open Original Shared Link My parents did something like this with my brother and me on easter when we we 10 & 12. We did an experiment to see what foods and other natural things we could use to...
  14. Ahhhhh I totally forgot about that word! Off-piste . . . I love it . I think it means back-country skiing or skiing away from the marked trails. When my brother and I were little we would often "invent" new, convoluted ways of walking home from school, many of which involved treading through a ravine/creek. When we could come home a bit late from school...
  15. I think it is quite variable between people. For me I stopped vomiting for the most part within a couple days and noticed a small improvement in the diarrhea within a few weeks. It was fairly gradual improvement for the first 3-4 months with the GI stuff and significant improvement by 6 months. The fatigue and general ill feeling took awhile to improve. Maybe...
  16. Ditto. I hope that your Kissey is there to well . . . kiss you. I had a blissfully sound night's sleep last night and feel much recuperated. It's much easier to get things done when your sleepy head doesn't feel like it's gonna fall right off! Something strange happened to me today. A friend/roommate of my mom's when she was in university called...
  17. Calgary '88 I think. I was only five so I don't really remember them. The Montreal Olympics were before my time which is probably for the best because we were the only country besides Yugoslavia to not win a gold medal at our own Olympics . But Vancouver will be the winter Olympics -- our specialty and with the Own the Podium initiative Canada is hoping to...
  18. Yes, a lot of your symptoms could be attributable to Celiac disease. Along with the GI stuff and fatigue, I also get the creepy crawly feeling on my skin. It is great that you got tested but even if it comes back negative, you could try going gluten-free to see if it helps your symptoms. Your symptoms could be caused by something other than Celiac disease...
  19. That makes me happy ! I love Canada and being Canadian and I love that there are people out there who think of Canada as exciting and exotic! Vancouver is awesome and I CANNOT WAIT until the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. I think I will cry with pride the whole time. The one thing besides New Year's Eve that turns me into a blubbering sap is seeing Canadian athletes...
  20. That was great! It just kept getting funnier! I don't know why but this made me laugh! I've never thought of Nova Scotia as sounding exotic . It is very nice though except some places have a very strong fish stench. You may have all seen this before (maybe someone's already posted it here) but my dad sent it to me and I thought it was totally...
  21. Arrrrgggg, stupid insomnia! Fourth night in a row that I've been awake since 2:00am even though I went to bed before 11 . I decided to get up tonight instead of just lying awake in bed. Here's a little something funny for everyone that I found: Two doctors opened an office in a small town and put up a sign reading: "Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Psychiatry...
  22. That is amazing!!! What happy news! It makes me happy just knowing that there is a wonderful programME out there like this and even happier that your deserving son was chosen to go. Yes! Who needs Morning Glory seeds when you have morphine. My grandpa had a cancerous lung tumor removed about 10 years ago (found by accident on an x-ray and cured...
  23. Congratulations Amanda!!! Here is the requisite celebratory confetti: o O`0 o . o O . 0 0 ` o ` 0 0 . o 0 ' o ` O o o ` 0 o O ' o . o ` 0 0 O o ` 0 . ` o 0 0 o O ` o . 0 0 ` ` o . 0 0 ' O o O o ` o o 0 . ` o O 0 . 0 O `0 o `. 0 o . O Now go duck and cover! Make sure all of the windows are shut tightly and maybe turn your water...
  24. Yes, for me it is anyway. I was nauseated much of the time in the months before being diagnosed. Nausea is one of my symptoms when I accidentally eat gluten and I usually vomit a few times in the first few hours of the reaction. If you're vomiting, make sure you're staying hydrated. I find drinking water is almost guaranteed to make me feel sicker when...
  25. Oh Las Vegas -- very fun! Strangely I've been there 3 times and Ryan and I are thinking about going this summer as a somewhat delayed honeymoon. I was 12 or so the first time and couldn't wait until I could go back once I was legal. I love gambling but thankfully I also have a fondness for my money so I am able to contain myself. Susie, if there ever is...
