    ARCHIVED How Do I Prepare?

I have been gluten free for 2.5 years, but in the past year have noticed a recurrence of some of the issues that I had when eating gluten. I know it's a different food(s) that I'm reacting to because the symptoms are different than when I get cc'd, or when I was eating gluten before diagnosed. I don't know what foods I'm reacting to, so my doc has referred...
  2. My tests were normal, too (including endoscopy). But so many other clues were decidedly abnormal that my doc diagnosed Celiac anyway. I am soooo soooo much better without gluten. It was a no-brainer. I didn't like leftovers either. I never took them home from restaurants and I'd never save them after meals because they'd just sit and rot in the refrigerator...
  3. That sounds like emotional-abuse to me. Not to be tolerated!
  4. Cool! I always thought that hops came from barley! Thanks for the info. Now I can use the products from my salon. Many thanks.
  5. I'm not trying to take his side and say that you're wrong... but... My husband was really dense in the beginning and thought I was ruining his life because we couldn't eat the things that he liked to eat. I would nag and cry, making him defensive and he would say things he didn't mean. Huge fights ensued. HUGE fights. I was sick a lot, he'd cc me, I'd...
  6. I use Maalox to stop the severe cramping. It doesn't help with other gi issues, but the cramping eases. Sometimes it takes 2 doses. - I keep a bottle at work. :-)
  7. In the beginning, we had 1/2 and 1/2 gluten-free and gluten house. As the years have passed, everyone has become mostly gluten-free. We've learned that meals taste just as good when you don't eat gluten foods - the bread has been replaced by other starches. Tinkyada pasta tastes great. Udi's bread is okay for grilled cheese sandwiches. Nobody wants a bun...
  8. I always bring my own hair products when I get my hair cut (shampoo/conditioner/gel). My stylist is fine with that because everything they use at the salon has hops in it (Edited to say: I've since been informed that hops are gluten-free - woohoo!). If you go somewhere and the stylist has a problem with you bringing your own shampoo/conditioner, leave! There...
  9. What helped me most in the beginning is... we have quite a few stores that I could shop from (whole foods, sprouts, vitamin cottage), but I picked just one in the beginning. I went there when it was least busy and learned the layout. Where's the gluten-free stuff? Learn a route so you can quickly get through the isles and don't have to search through the...
  10. Sometimes my hands break out into a rash that is so itchy and burning that medication won't relieve them. It looks like eczema, but 10x worse in itch and burn. I always thought it was due to chemicals so I'm very careful when cleaning, but I didn't do any cleaning yesterday and it happened right after I ate a new food. Since I'm keeping a food diary and...
  11. I went gluten-free 2 years ago and my hair stopped falling out. I've noticed it growing back in.
  12. In my family we called it our "pooch". I thought it was normal and a genetic gift (not a happy gift, but something that ran in our family). Once I went gluten-free, that gift went away and my stomach started to flatten! I wonder how many women in my family actually had celiac and not a "pooch"!
  13. I did some research and found that pharmaceutical grade lactose only contains .01% milk protein. I'd say that's safe enough for me to continue with my cf journey. Thanks so much for clarifying about meds. It would have cost a fortune to have them made without lactose.
  14. Cool!
  15. Thanks for all the replies. I have been gluten-free for several years... but as I originally said, there's other stuff going on. I decided to go to a doc and get food allergy testing. One of my problems was that I was trying to go cf on my own, but several of my medications have lactose in them! Yikes! There's no way to do an elimination diet with casein...
  16. Wasn't expecting to make people laugh. I'm still learning. I thought this forum would teach me how to live and be happy with a gluten free/ casein free life. I don't have anyone to teach me around here, but I think I've managed pretty well on my own up until now - I've even cut out the awful soda, chocolate, and gluten-free cookies. I'm just overwhelmed...
  17. Udi's white bread! You can order online. Their cinnamon rolls are wonderful.
  18. I really think that lactose or casein is a problem for me, so I decided to do an elimination test on Wednesday. My stomach is still cramping and it dawned on me to look up my meds. Lactose is a main ingredient in 4 out of 5 of them! What to do? I can't stop taking them, because some of them are life-lines.
  19. What could be the culprit in Skittles that I just got sick from? I've been gluten-free since 9/2007. It wasn't hard to do that because I had classic gi symptoms. My major symptoms went away, but I've had lingering issues and miss a lot of work because I thought I was continuing to get cc'd. I blamed it on my celiac-free husband who lovingly cooks dinner...
  20. Don't totally freak out. You do have control over your own house. You can use some of the same items. For example, I use the same cutting knives, utensils, silverware, dishware, bakeware, and storage containers as the rest of the family. However, I prewash everything so in case there were crumbs on them, I've gotten rid of that before I use it. I did buy...
  21. I had/have muscle twitching. Before the celiac diagnosis, I was suspected to have MS, but neurologist ruled that out. My twitching only reappears when I accidentally get glutened.
  22. Getting my dh on board was difficult - it nearly split us up. But it's essential for your safety because he's the #1 carrier that will cross-contaminate you... especially since he has a beard and mustache. My dh whined so much in the beginning. When he wasn't whining, he was dismissing my illness. When he wasn't doing that, he was angry with me for making...
  23. Stop using a toaster. I don't eat toasted food anymore. There's no room in my kitchen for two toasters, so I just gave up toasted food right away and now I don't miss it at all. You have to give up a lot - you know this already. It's not fair. You'll say that a lot to yourself. And it's true. When you live in a house with no Celiacs, life isn't fair. You...
  24. I stayed home the first year, too. It was such a bummer and I was very sad. But now my sis hosts dinner and the only thing with gluten is desert. We just forgo stuffing (which for next year I'll have to learn to make with cornbread and gluten-free bread cubes) - all other food is exactly the same as any other year (except gluten-free) and the non-celiacs...
  25. Thanks to everyone's suggestions, I did go to the doc and get an annual physical and bloodwork. My blood is okay, but a little low on ferritin, so I'm taking iron 2x a day. Nothing too low, though. What's really great is that my doc is referring me to a dietitian. Although I've been gluten-free for 2 years, my diet is crap because I haven't got a good handle...
