  1. Yes, gluten can aggravate joint pains. I would reconsider eating it for the test- your response to it is enough to convince me that you have problems with gluten. Do you really "need" an official diagnosis?
  2. Sounds great! My grandparents live in scarsdale, and italian food used to be a safe thing (I have gg, milk, and nut allergic cousins). Actualyl, we used to order from ciao all the time. Good to know we still can!
  3. confessions of a rogue gluten-free baker: I have never put Xanthan gum (or guar gum for that matter) in anything. Not in cookies, banana bread, muffins, or anything else I've baked. It's more out of sheer laziness than anything else, and not having bothered to buy some. But I routinely bake for gluten eaters, and it turns out pretty good. I get plenty...
  4. I haven't heard of this, but I can tell you I wouldn't try it. This is like the wheat starch in the UK- it's still gonna have a bit of gluten. I also know that I react to barley worst of all. So this is a no for me. I have, however, tried the oats. Those are different- oats do not contain gluten. The reason that we can't eat quaker oats or w/e is because...
  5. I'm sorry... Sub ideas: -Can you do sweet potato? Sweet potato fries are yummy -parsnips are geat in soups/stews and cooked up like potatoes, along with other root veggies..mmm, great for winter -mashed cauliflower tastes really similar to mashed potato Good luck!
  6. I normally would say no, I wouldn't complain only about a glutening. You know that you are taking a risk by eating there and are aware of it, and accidents happen. You can't blame a restaurant for not having extensive knowledge of all of the pitfalls of gluten-free cooking. Restaurants have gotten rid of their gluten-free menus because they were sued over...
  7. I have no idea about the Pei Wei either, but PF Chang's isn't so formal. You could go there in jeans or khakis and a decent top and be OK, but maybe not shorts.
  8. Avoidance. That's it. You have to completely avoid these foods so your gut can heal. If you are truly celiac or gluten intolerant, you may be able to add in dairy or soy after healing for a while (6 months to a year at least). And make sure you're avoiding all forms of gluten (barley, rye, oats) and not just wheat.
  9. If you're used to having D, you might be suprised what "normal" is. I know I was a little And as your digestion gets back on track, you might not be on a regular schedule for a while...you might have to go later on or something. I would only be worried if it's really painful or there's next to nothing coming out for several days.
  10. I am frustrated because as much as I try to explain, my father and stepmother don't really understand CC. They had turkey sandwiches for lunch, and my dad had me open and take out the turkey first for my salad-good! But then as he was making their sandwiches, he put his gluteny hands all over the turkey, in the lettuce, touched a bunch of tomatoes before...
  11. I have chickens too, and they're doing the same! It's because we have more daylight now. I love Tortilla Espanola, and its Italian counterpart Frittata (sp?). I don't have an exact recipe, it's kinda something you make up and you go along. But it's like a giant baked omelette that you cut and serve in wedges, like a pie. Sautee a bunch of vegetables of...
  12. I try the world would be a sad place if reeses weren't gluten-free
  13. Normal ones are fine, yes But be careful of some of the holiday themed ones- some of the eggs have gluten- Wheat starch I believe
  14. I just had an awesome sushi dinner at Ginza in Bloomfield, CT (near Hartford). Not onlywas the fish delicious, but they had wheat free soy sauce! I had packets of not-so-good stuff, but their San J Tamari was much preferred! It was recommended to us by one of my dad's clients whose kids have celiac. Great dinner overall!
  15. I have been on numerous BCPs over tthe past 9 months for endometriosis, and all were gluten-free. I was on: Yaz, Seasonique, LoEstrin24, and now Portia (The previous ones did not control my cycle) All of the above are gluten-free, and seasonique is a seasonale generic
  16. I definitely want to volunteer there at some point- at this point I'm too young to volunteer but too old to be a camper! I LOVE camp, and have been going aince I was 7, and last year I was a counselor. This summer I have other plans, but I would love to someday be a counselor again. This sound slike a wonderful oppurtunity.
  17. 1. While a biopsy is considered the most reliable diagnosis, it is not perfect. And you have to be eating gluten. The most reliable test is dietray response. If you feel better on the diet, then why bother? You are absolutely right. I never had a biopsy either. 2. No cheating!!! BAD choice...but I'm sure your body told you that already 3. As for...
  18. Digestive problems related to mensturation can be from endometriosis on the intestines...this is what I have. Basically tissue from the endometrium (lining) of the uterus grows outside it. If it's really bad, there's a simple surgery for it, but I'm just on birth control and doing OK most of the time. Good luck, see your OB/GYN!
  19. First of all, BREATHE. Believe me, we've all been there...the diet can be overwhelming, especially when it seems like we can't eat our favorite foods anymore. The key word there is seems! There is a sub. for everything...sushi is a piece of (gluten-free) cake! If you can't bring yourself to do the fish, there are plenty of vegetarian rolls- avacado...
  20. Mi Del arrowroot cookies are good too
  21. Rice Krispies have barley malt, so yes that is probably it. Also skittles are fine, though I don't know about the jellybeans
  22. I would stick with the kind that comes in the little packets, which should have the ingredients on it, and I believe that I have seen those that are gluten-free. I am very wary of CC in a chinese restaurant, especially with everyone dipping those crumbly wonton things in the duck sauce...they might just refill the same bowls! Plus soy sauce, which has wheat...
  23. It's also a symptom of b12 deficiency. Have your doctor run a nutrient deficiency panel.
  24. Thanks, that's good to know!
