  1. Although aduki and urad are not mentioned by name, it sadly seems that the cool ethnic beans are illegal, only the boring ones like navy beans are okay. Black beans are to be used cautiously. Fortunately lentils are legal, so I take that to include red lentils. This is one of the areas of the SCD that leaves me wondering.
  2. Mia I just passed the six month mark on the SCD. I have noticed real improvement in the past 7 weeks or so. NO D in this time, and, hopefully I'm not providing TMI, but far less bowel urgency. I'm beginning to feel normal, whatever that is.
  3. Hi Cici and Mia Hang in there. The first two weeks are the hardest (or were for me anyway). After I got over my sugar addiction things got much easier. When I started the diet, I didn't have constant uncontrollable D, so instead of doing an intro, I simply eliminated illegal foods. Here in the USA we are programmed to eat low fat diets. I'm pretty...
  4. I have the best luck baking with almond butter that I make myself. I buy raw almonds and lightly roast them in the oven. When they are cool I put them through a Champion juicer that has a part for making nut butter. One cup of nut butter is heavier than a cup of nut flour. I use one cup of nut butter to every two eggs.
  5. My experience is that dairy makes me dull, foggy-headed and sleepy. I do not get gas or other digestive disturbances from dairy. I was told I am reacting to protein, not milk sugar. I really do not know what it is about dairy that causes this. Can you shed any more light on the topic of casein vs. lactose intolerance? And can anyone venture a guess if mine...
  6. Here is a link to places to find dry curd cottage cheese Open Original Shared Link I am enjoying a "bread-free" diet, but occasionally make almond bars by combining 2 eggs, a cup of almond butter, a tsp of almond extract and 1/3 cup of honey and baking it in a 9 x 13 brownie pan at 350 until done. It is not bread, but you can spread stuff on it or make...
  7. I was at the local feed store the other day when a couple came in selling both chicken eggs and duck eggs. If you live in the boonies, try a feed store. They sell ducklings and feed, so even if they don't carry the eggs, they will know who owns ducks. We had both ducks and chickens a few years back and my husband ate a lot of duck eggs. I hated them, they...
  8. Another very interesting thread! Glad you asked the questions and great to see so many replies. I just read, and highly recommend, In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. Not about gluten, but he sheds a lot of light on the low-fat debate in relation to heart disease and other chronic diseases. Basically says low fat diets are based on bad science. And...
  9. Yikes!! The only reason I can think that any celiac would purposely eat gluten is lack of understanding of what gluten does to your body. Please read Dr. Peter Green's book Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic or watch this video from UCSD on youtube: Open Original Shared Link
  10. That sounds soooo good! I need to put fresh ginger on the shopping list. Today I had shrimp, cucumber and tomato for lunch--good cold finger food. Dinner was sauteed chicken breast (again) and mixed greens, lightly steamed then fried in garlic and coconut oil then topped with a dash of lime juice. Tomorrow I have time to bake. I'll grate some zucchini...
  11. Hey there Fig Welcome to the thread. I went to the Ener G website and found the following ingredients for egg replacer: Potato Starch, tapioca starch flour, leavening (calcium lactate [not derived from dairy], calcium carbonate, citric acid), sodium carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose Not SCD legal!! I really believe that a big part of...
  12. I think it would be very hard to make it through the first couple of weeks on the SCD without a good supply of safe "legal" food on hand. Besides the freezer, I'd recommend keeping a supply of peanut butter (100% peanuts, of course) dried fruit, canned tuna and sardines in the house. It can be hard to adjust thinking about what to grab when you're hungry...
  13. This is my first grain-free summer and I am eating all of the vegetables coming out of the garden instead of giving carloads to neighbors and the local food bank. It's funny, I used to think too many summer veggies gave me indigestion, but this year I am eating vegetables, raw and or cooked, all day long and feel great. Most of the peas and beans got eaten...
  14. I think we live close when you are here. My husband went to China last year and left home thinking he was open minded about food and would eat "anything put in front of him". Boy, did get an awakening! He lost a lot of weight in two weeks because he didn't like anything he was offered. And it's even harder for you because your health is at stake, it's more...
  15. Wow, lots of response to this question! I can only give my personal opinion and experience. I do not believe SCD cures celiac, and have never heard of anyone who claims it did cure them. I think it helps heal a damaged gut. I also think it gets all of that toxic processed food out of the diet. No soy, corn, wheat, rice or sugar eliminates almost all...
  16. Maybe we should put this one into the stupid doctor thread. But seriously, who is Mom going to believe? The doctor or the nosy friend of a relative?
  17. Ali Once again, I totally agree with you. The SCD has been a revelation and blessing for me. I do not want to eat "foodlike substances" made of grain, sugar and soy ever again! Food tastes better than it ever has and I am feeling better and better. I was in an all day sporting event today. Last year I did the same event and was exhausted by 1 pm...
  18. Alison Can we call you Alison now? Thank you so much for checking this out. The info you posted about probiotics and dairy makes a lot of sense.
  19. You may need probiotics. There is a strong relationship between celiac and the buildup of bad bacteria in the gut. Also, many people cannot produce adequate digestive enzymes until the small intestine heals. If you have not read "Celiac Disease: a Hidden Epidemic" by Dr. Peter Green, then try to find a copy. And I second Shay's advice about checking out the...
  20. This is a tough one. I see celiac symptoms in many people, and usually they don't want to hear about it! Worse yet, the grandaughter of a friend had multiple symptoms and her mother did take her to the doc who ordered a blood panel. Apparently some of the blood work was positive, but the doc said it was a false positive and meaningless. So the child is still...
  21. Ali I have a gut bacteria question for you. I have been told that you don't eat any dairy, then you need non-lactose-eating probiotics. Do you know anything about this? If I take the kind od probiotics that live off dairy then don't eat dairy, won't the bacteria starve to death in my intestines? What are dairy probios called? What are non-dairy ones called...
  22. Thanks, Ali I had some butter and it didn't bother me, and it sure tasted good. In "Defense of Food" Pollan mentions that feeding grain to cattle makes them sick and changes the milk and meat. I would like to find some milk from grass-fed cows. Might have to buy my own cow.
  23. This thread is getting so big, sometimes I think we could have threads within threads. I'm sorry you are feeling bad. I'll bet a couple of days back on the diet clear things up. I am reading Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, a book I highly recommend. The book is about the "Western diet" of refined carbs and low fat. He calls prcessed food "foodlike...
  24. You guys are funny--and wonderful. I've been wondering for the past 24 hours if someone would challenge me on the feelings vs. science thing. I think we are all at the point here where we are often better off trusting our feelings than listening to "science". Kay's point about doctor-prescribed drugs is excellent. But back to the yogurt--what evidence...
  25. I am also on a dairy free SCD. I started off with the SCD in early April still eating dairy, but the SCD helped me figure out that I am casein intolerant. I also take probiotics, not always the same kind, and drink kombucha now and then. Coconut milk is recomended only in small amounts after you have been on the diet for a while, so don't go overboard...
