  1. Hi Unhappy, Can you cook your own foods at school? That is one way to get rid of the gluten in your diet. If you make all your own foods you can learn what bothers you faster ingredients wise. You may be reacting to more than just gluten after all. I am not really sure what hungry jacks are to tell the truth. We have flapjacks / pancakes in the...
  2. Hi Sailing Girl, Maybe he could understand it better if he thinks about the gluten free standard that is being considered by the FDA. They are talking about a 20 ppm (parts per million) standard for gluten free products. If you think about 1 cracker divided into 1 million pieces and then 20 of those millionths being enough to make you sick, that is not...
  3. Ooohh super gross-out yucko Jason! Just kidding! I haven't had a fistula myself, but my younger brother did. He had Crohn's and had several fistulas over time. They did a bowel re-section for him and a colostomy to give his colon time to heal. You might find some people who have experience with fistulas at the Crohn's Forum. I am not saying...
  4. There are a ton of varying symptoms that people can get with celiac disease. Yours might be related or might not. If you have a relative with celiac the chances are higher that you could have it. So it might be a good idea to talk to your doc, or maybe your relative's doc who has celiac. One typical symptom is gas and bloating which can cause pain. ...
  5. Hi Terri, It's great that you found out about the celiac. Many people feel better after starting the gluten free diet. It may take some time though, as healing time varies for people. There quite a few threads that discuss the vitamins and supplements you might want to consider adding to your diet while you are healing. D and B vitamins for instance...
  6. You might be thinking about the paleo diet or Aktins diet. Or the SCD diet, but that one uses a lot of yogurt. Different people have different intolerances, so the best diet for you will be something you need to discover for yourself. I eat lots of rice and quinoa, so I am not following the carb free plan. I did do an elimination diet to discover some...

    ARCHIVED New Here

Hi, Welcome to the forum! Losing weight is a classic symptom of celiac. Then there are also people who gain weight. After I was gluten free for a several months, my appetite seemed to decrease. I think for me was because of improved absorption of nutrients, and of course taking more vitamins/minerals. I didn't really lose weight, just didn't eat as...
  8. I take about 2k units of vit. D a day. I also take a calcium pill since I am basically dairy free, and a B complex. Also a liquid B -12 couple times a week. And a regular multi-vit pill too. I also take pysllium husks for extra fiber, and DPP-iv for cross contamination.
  9. You might want to look around the DH forum here also. I have read that there is a biopsy of the skin they can do during an outbreak that is conclusive for DH and celiac. They need to biopsy the skin around the area though, not the center.
  10. I used to have night sweats, before gluten-free and for a while after, but they stopped a while back. I think they can be related to thyroid issues and possibly diabetes also. And fever of course.
  11. My understanding is the allergy skin tests can show a wheat reaction, but it doesn't indicate a gut reaction is present. Supposed to be a different antibodie "mechanism". You can also try an elimination diet to detect food intolerances. There are different ways of doing them. There are quite a few threads here and on the net in general about elimination...
  12. You might be reacting to yeast in the yogurt, or some other ingredient. Some flavored yogurts have gluten in them also. Checking the ingredients in the yogurt would be the first step.
  13. Just FYI, if you have had Vitamin D levels tested by Quest over the last couple of years they may have been incorrect results. This link to the NY Times article explains that not all their labs followed proper procedures, and materials were not reliable. They say they have corrected the problems now. The article is from 7-Jan-09. So in theory test results...

  15. Hi Anthony, You could be getting glutened, or it could be your GI system is adjusting to your new diet. I know my guts got a lot more "active" after I went gluten-free. I figured it was a sign of healing, that the intestines were healing and getting stronger and their movements more noticeable. I had spasms in my gut for weeks after going gluten-free...
  16. I think fasting is a good idea Ben. Once in a while anyway. I think the idea of giving the body / GI system a break is a good one. Weekends are the time to do it I think, since it can be tiring. Don't overdo it though! Have you thought about a corn intolerance? It could be your system doesn't like corn. Or the corn chips make be cc'd during manufacture...
  17. Hi Zella, The blackstrap molasses should be gluten-free, it is just left over goop from making refined sugar from sugar cane. They say it is actually good for you because it is the leftovers and has the minerals and whatever that are removed from refined white sugar. But that's not how I take psyllium husks! I just put a little in my food, stir...
  18. Here is a link directly to the comments entry form page. I chose "Individual Consumer" as the Submitter Category. Open Original Shared Link Hopefully more people will comment for this change!
  19. It really is kind of an individual thing I think, weather to go for the full diagnosis or not. I had been off gluten for 4 months when I finally got to see a Dr. that specializes in it. I wrote down my symptoms before hand and he read them over and said it sounded like celiac to him. I was considering going back on gluten to do the biopsy testing but decided...
  20. The way I understand it, the biopsy is a hit or miss thing, and can give false negatives in the best situation. If you have been pretty much gluten-free for a while, there is probably an even lower chance than usual that the biopsy will show something conclusive. At least that's how my non-doctor head sees it.
  21. Hi Angie, I hope I can be of some little help, although I am not a doctor or anything, just another person who is learning by being there. The thing with wine is that some of it has gluten in it also. That may sound weird, but they sometimes use it in the process of making the wine or in storing it. I had trouble with my feet and ankles swelling over...
  22. Hey Ben, Oh yeah better living through chemistry eh? I did some reading on the klonopin. Sounds like some people have a tough time when stopping that stuff. Sounds like tapering off it is a good idea. Open Original Shared Link I totally agree with you on the testing of people with IBS. I really think it makes sense to test a lot more...
  23. Hi again Ben, One affect of celiac disease is malabsorbtion. When your intestines get inflamed and irritated they can't absorb nutrients properly. So celiacs can have low vitamin levels because of the malabsorbtion. The sublingual liquid B-12 is sometimes recommended because it can absorbed in the mouth, and avoid the malabsorbtion in the intestines...
  24. Guess the ultra sound is not the answer then. There is something called diverticultis that might fit the symptoms. Of course it could be other things also. Got a link here that tells some about it. I wouldn't follow their diet advice though! They suggest lots of fiber with gluten grains, All Bran cereal, not good for us. If you wanted to try some fiber...
  25. I wonder if it would be cheaper and also worthwhile to do an ultrasound instead of the MRI? Seems liek if the "friend" is near the skin that an ultrasound would be able to pick it up ok?
